Elias heard the anger under Joji's words and made himself wait. Yui did not.
"Your country was already falling when the Federation moved in, and you know it. That does not excuse the bombs, but it does make your version incomplete."
Joji's hand shifted under his coat. Elias saw it and raised his voice before the movement became a choice.
"Keep your hand where I can see it, and curse the Federation after your son is away from the people hunting him." Joji kept his eyes on Yui.
"You speak like a soldier who read the summary file. I was there when the alien carriers came down over the old capital. I was there when our own defense grid failed and the Federation answered with fire from orbit. They struck cities to slow an enemy already walking through families. Then they arrived with flags and aid crates and told the survivors to be grateful." His voice roughened, but he held it together.
