The can opener weighed more than Elias expected.
It had a wooden handle, a crank on the side, and a steel point that looked mean enough to bite through old ration tins. It also looked like something a bored grandfather might use during a power outage.
Elias stared at it for one breath too long. The shape was ridiculous, but the point was sharp and the crank had ugly leverage built into it. Maybe that was enough. Maybe the universe had lowered his standards until a can opener counted as hope. "Dots, we are currently fighting for our lives, and you gave me kitchen equipment."
"You asked for something that chews through hard shell without needing skill," Dots said. "This is one of the most honest answers I have ever given you."
