Ella slowly opened her eyes. For several seconds, she simply stared at the ceiling, trying to remember where she was. Her eyes felt heavy and swollen, a painful reminder of how much she had cried the night before. Thankfully, the blinds were still drawn, keeping the morning sunlight from entering the room.
She slowly pushed herself upright. 'How did I fall asleep?' she wondered as her mind replayed yesterday's event.
She remembered meeting her dad's team and their solemn expressions as they explained that the cancer was already too advanced. There was nothing more they could do to cure him. At this point, treatment could only buy him more time.
