But when Silas saw the swarm of Beedrill, his expression changed: "Damn it! Why is there such a massive swarm of Beedrill in this cursed place?"
There were at least forty or fifty Beedrill in front of him.
Based on normal proportions, since some members would stay behind to protect the unevolved Kakuna and Weedle at home, this Beedrill colony must have at least a hundred individuals.
With a swarm this large, they could easily claim a significant territory, not just in Nature Park, but even in the Johto forests.
Silas had every reason to believe they were the dominant force here.
Then the question arose: why had they targeted him? He considered himself a decent person.
"Woah!"
A small voice sounded.
A teary-eyed Kakuna perched on top of one of the Beedrill and cried out.
Silas froze for a moment, then recognized the Kakuna.
"Hiss!"
The leading Beedrill angrily let out a sharp cry toward Silas.
"I mean, you don't seem very interested in having a friendly chat with me, huh?"
A bead of sweat appeared on Silas's forehead as he took a cautious step back.
He began to regret not letting Blaziken participate in this competition.
A swarm this large of Beedrill, not weak in Electric resistance would be difficult even for a Pesudo-Elite Ampharos to deal with quickly.
The leader Beedrill raised its right stinger.
Silas's pupils constricted: "Ampharos, use Electric Terrain at full power!"
"Ampharos!"
Ampharos sensed the danger.
This was actually its first time facing so many opponents at once.
A golden field of electricity immediately surrounded its body.
The only relief Silas had was that the swarm's strength varied considerably.
Aside from a few elite Beedrill leaders clearly experienced veterans, most of the others were around level fifteen or sixteen.
A few hadn't even reached normal rank yet, only level thirteen or fourteen.
It seemed they saw Silas and Ampharos as a way to train their younger members.
This behavior was common among wild Pokémon that gathered in swarms, especially Beedrill.
Because of the special nature of their earlier stages, wild Beedrill required time to develop decent battle capabilities.
So even when food wasn't scarce, they would occasionally mobilize as a group, both to fight and expand their territory.
This was another reason Beedrill were known as forest bullies.
These guys were utterly ruthless.
The Beedrill leader watched coldly from above, According to its children, the pink Pokémon (Ampharos) had kicked it twice and still hadn't incapacitated it.
Even though it wasn't skilled in close combat, the leader knew the Pokémon wasn't that strong.
The leader's gaze was cunning.
This Pokémon was perfect for training the new Beedrill.
As for the human, the leader didn't even consider him a threat.
In its past experience, no human had ever confronted them without fleeing.
This scene was just another struggle before death, the Beedrill leader was familiar with this.
The only thing unsettling was the energy fluctuation coming from the nearby golden field.
Silas looked at the unmoving Advance Beedrill and saw an opening: "Ampharos, Thunderbolt!"
If all the Advance Level charged together, he would have been worried.
These Advance Level Beedrill could easily endure the damage from a Thunderbolt.
But without them, with only the novice and standard Beedrill, the level difference would determine the outcome.
"Ampharos!"
Strong electricity surged from the golden field.
"Hiss!"
The Beedrill leader far ahead suddenly widened its eyes and screamed.
The energy fluctuation exceeded its expectations.
"Boom! Boom! Boom!"
One after another, huge explosions rang out.
Dozens of Beedrill fell from the sky, smoking heavily.
The few that were farther away survived, but were in poor condition.
Silas had anticipated this.
With Ampharos's mastery of Electric Terrain, Electric-type moves used within it would have their power increased by 40%, a full third higher than the base 30%.
Thunderbolt, being one of the strongest Electric moves alongside Flamethrower, had excellent cost-effectiveness.
With the Same Type Attack Bonus (STAB), this hit's power was even greater than that of a Hyper Beam.
"Hiss!"
The Beedrill leader's eyes turned red.
This damned Pokémon had injured its entire colony!
It thrust both stingers forward.
The next moment, under the leader's guidance, the remaining Beedrill charged Ampharos again!
Even though their numbers were fewer, ten or so Beedrill of this caliber were more troublesome than before.
Fortunately, Electric Terrain was still active.
"Ampharos, Charge Beam, and build up electricity!"
Following his principle of swift and decisive action, Silas decided to use a specially modified move designed for Ampharos.
Ampharos's usually gentle face was now serious, and it nodded solemnly.
"Ampharos!"
Its mouth opened slightly as it inhaled.
The golden electricity that had been surrounding its body suddenly surged toward Ampharos's mouth. The light dimmed gradually, and Ampharos's face occasionally flickered with a hint of pain.
Correspondingly, the red orb at the tip of its tail began to glow with a different kind of light.
This entire sequence of actions took only two or three seconds.
At this time, the Beedrill swarm was still some distance away from Ampharos.
Another second passed.
Seeing Ampharos's pained expression deepen, Silas issued another command: "Again! Thunderbolt!"
The radio staff watching the battle through the cameras instinctively covered their eyes.
A sudden burst of white light flooded their retinas.
"Zzzzt!"
Far away in the forest, the recording machines groaned under the overload.
"Bang! Bang! Bang!"
Dull explosions echoed from all directions.
Elsewhere in Nature Park, Rai looked at the intense white flashes in the distance, his eyes flickering uncertainly.
He quickly stood and moved away.
Looking more closely, he saw a circle of fallen Pokémon around the area.
Rai, a firm believer in strength above all, thought winning would be easy: just find the strongest wild Pokémon.
He wasn't the only one curious, many other trainers also headed toward the commotion.
Curiosity was often their greatest strength — and their biggest liability.
"Hey, hey, hey, Silas! Can you hear me?"
The noisy voice through the headset made Silas shake his head instinctively. "I'm fine, Mary. You just keep the program going."
Mary let out a slightly amused laugh, even at a time like this, she hadn't forgotten the broadcast.
Dizzy and aching, Silas peeked his head from behind a thick tree trunk.
All the Beedrill lay sprawled on the ground, including the troublesome Kakuna.
Ampharos was panting heavily, surrounded by broken branches and stones.
"Looks like this move still needs some refinement. Real combat always reveals some flaws," Silas said, stroking his chin as he approached Ampharos.
Patting Ampharos, he said with relief, "Well done. Your control was excellent, better than all those training sessions before."
Ampharos gave a barely perceptible nod. It was exhausted, feeling like its body wasn't even its own.
Silas quickly gave it a few Oran Berries to eat.
With their excellent restorative effects, Ampharos's condition soon recovered above average.
As for injuries? It hadn't sustained any.
"Let's go, get out of here first."
During this time, Silas collected some materials from the Beedrill, then quickly moved out with Ampharos.
Years of bounty hunting had taught him that after making such a huge commotion, it was best not to linger.
Not long after Silas left, the first trainers to arrive gawked at the wreckage.
Then their faces lit up with ecstatic joy.
One of them threw a Poké Ball at the largest Beedrill leader.
But the Poké Ball was intercepted halfway.
Turning in anger, the trainer noticed the second and third trainers had arrived.
The three exchanged a glance and immediately understood each other.
A Pokémon that was obviously the colony's leader was certainly not weak.
If captured, it could secure a high ranking in this year's Bug Catching Contest.
This was a windfall opportunity.
Their eyes burned with determination, they couldn't let it escape!
"Butterfree, use Psychic!" ×3
Yes, this was a battle between Bug-catching enthusiasts.
Silas, having moved far away, could somewhat predict what was happening behind him.
But it wasn't his concern.
He just thought the Kakuna was quite filial.
As for why he didn't try to capture the Beedrill leader to claim a win, Silas felt it wasn't worth wasting a precious opportunity on it.
A Pokémon of that level? If he wanted, he could definitely find and capture it later.
The dark forest was silent.
Only the occasional sounds of battle indicated that the contest was still ongoing.
But this quiet didn't last long.
"Buzz, buzz."
A subtle sound reached Silas's ears.
"Again?" he frowned. "Beedrill?"
He closed his eyes to identify it carefully: "No, just two Pokémon, and their sizes are very different. Not Beedrill."
His expression changed slightly: "They're fast."
In his perception, these two Pokémon were circling him and Ampharos.
It seemed he had once again become the prey. Silas felt the thrill of survival in the wild, something he hadn't experienced in a long time.
He smiled wryly, this was exciting, wasn't it?
Danger glimmered in his eyes: "Ampharos, strike them!"
"Ampharos!"
Without hesitation, Ampharos hurled its electricity into the darkness.
Under the flickering golden light, though brief, Silas could clearly identify the opponents.
"Ah, so today I'm playing a father-and-son match, huh?"
