Chapter 385 - Chapter 385: The Winning Pokémon

Its entire body was red, with two small horns on its head. On both sides of its tail were structures resembling airplane tail fins, and at the very end were two small spikes.

It was Yanma.

The larger, fiercer-looking one was naturally its evolved form, Yanmega.

Compared to the relatively common Yanma, Yanmega was far rarer in the wild because it required mastering the specific move Ancient Power in order to evolve.

Silas relaxed slightly.

The Bug/Flying typing put both Pokémon at a natural disadvantage against Ampharos.

He didn't understand why they had targeted him.

Logically speaking, even if they couldn't sense Ampharos's exact level, the residual Electric-type energy around it should have been obvious.

As predators that mainly fed on smaller Bug-type Pokémon, Yanmega shouldn't have chosen him as a target.

Silas stood casually behind Ampharos, thinking without restraint. Feeling his gaze from behind, Ampharos shifted its body slightly.

With enemies present, however, it wasn't the time to complain about its Trainer.

"Could it be, because of appearance?" Silas muttered.

That seemed reasonable.

Ampharos's pink body made it look harmless, more like a pet Pokémon than a powerful battler.

Combined with its medium-to-small stature, it appeared to be an easy target.

Although Yanmega primarily hunted smaller Bug-type Pokémon, when an opportunity arose to improve its "diet," it wouldn't hesitate to expend some effort.

The dark forest seemed like a gaping mouth ready to swallow everything whole.

After the brief disturbance earlier, Yanma and Yanmega appeared to have retreated, as if frightened by Ampharos.

But Silas knew that was merely an illusion.

In the wild, one must never forget a single rule: never lower your guard.

Some gentle Pokémon might not attack humans proactively, but predators were a different story.

Especially when protecting their offspring.

Silas subtly rubbed his fingers together.

The sound was faint, only Ampharos, standing close to him, could hear it.

"Ampharos."

As it cried out, Ampharos turned its head slightly toward Silas.

"Whoosh!"

A red-with-green streak and a green-with-red streak burst out of the darkness.

"Now! Thunderbolt!" Silas shouted.

"Ampha—ros!"

Without needing much charge time, Ampharos, well-versed in acting, elongated its cry as dazzling electricity burst forth.

The smaller silhouette halted abruptly — clearly startled.

That was the younger Yanma.

"Yanmega!"

Yanmega, however, did not slow down at all. It cried out to warn its offspring.

It realized they had been deceived.

But at this moment, only charging forward offered any chance of survival.

Simply dodging would accomplish nothing.

"Zzzzz—!"

The crackling sound of electricity filled the clearing.

The pitch-black forest was illuminated brightly.

Continuous arcs of electricity shot from Ampharos, striking both Yanmega and Yanma.

Several seconds later, Ampharos ceased the attack and panted lightly.

"Yanma…"

The Yanma, only around normal strength, had already lost the ability to battle under the electric assault and lay on the ground weakly groaning.

"Yanmega…"

Yanmega glanced at its fallen offspring. Its cry was filled with pain and confusion.

It didn't understand how this seemingly harmless Pokémon could be so powerful.

Feeling its body, Yanmega knew it would not survive a second attack. Even so, the two small fangs near its head began glowing faint white.

Some things had to be attempted, no matter the odds.

Yanmega forced its battered body forward in a desperate charge.

"Impressive spirit," Silas praised quietly. "But that's all."

"Ampharos, Iron Tail!"

"Ampharos!"

Ampharos swung its arms, and its tail shone with a bright metallic silver light. With a twist of its body, it lashed out, colliding directly with the charging Yanmega.

"Clang—Bang!"

After the crisp metallic sound came the heavy impact of Iron Tail striking Yanmega.

Beneath Ampharos's gentle appearance lay strength approaching Elite-tier.

Even if it was slightly weaker physically than other Pokémon at the same level, it was far beyond what an Advance-level wild Yanmega could endure.

Yanmega's larger, heavier body was sent flying and slammed into a tree.

Silas pulled two Park Balls from his pocket.

Biu!

Biu!

After a brief shake, Yanma and Yanmega were successfully captured.

Ampharos glanced curiously at its Trainer.

"These two are special," Silas said calmly. "Whether I win this Bug Catching Contest depends on them."

Silas seemed to be explaining it to Ampharos, yet at the same time speaking to Mary through the headset.

Mary naturally picked up the conversation. "Oh? And why is that?"

"Because the larger Yanmega is Advance-level, and the smaller Yanma has the Speed Boost Ability."

Silas summed it up in one sentence.

That was precisely why he had used two capture opportunities on them.

Yanma, the Clear Wing Pokémon, resembles a dragonfly and has three pairs of legs.

Although it does not have Compound Eyes visually, its unique eyes, present both before and after evolution allow it to see 360 degrees without moving its head. This enables Yanma and Yanmega to instantly grasp their surroundings.

This trait is the basis for the common Ability Compound Eyes, which allows Pokémon to land moves more accurately in battle.

However, the Yanma line also possesses a far more powerful standard Ability: Speed Boost.

When Yanma flaps its wings at high speed, it creates shock waves that can even shatter nearby glass.

Such powerful wing muscles allow it to rapidly increase its Speed.

Compared to Compound Eyes, however, Yanma with Speed Boost are extremely rare.

That's because the Speed Boost Ability requires wing strength that most Yanma simply cannot achieve.

Take Silas's Blaziken, for example.

For it, only with such powerful legs and physical conditioning can it possess the Speed Boost Hidden Ability. Although flying is somewhat less taxing than running, the difference isn't exaggerated.

For that reason, Yanma with Speed Boost usually have excellent potential.

And with this Yanma's mother being Advance-level, its potential was very likely at least Advance-level, possibly even approaching Pesudo-Elite level.

In fact, Silas's Gigalith had been somewhat similar back when it was Roggenrola.

However, that was because its Weak Armor Ability didn't align well with its natural traits, making such individuals especially rare slightly different from Yanma's situation.

Regardless of the reason, this Yanma alone was enough to strongly support his bid for victory in this competition.

Capturing Yanmega had merely been incidental.

On one hand, it strengthened the credibility of Yanma's potential. On the other hand, it prepared for releasing them afterward.

That's right.

Despite Yanma's impressive potential, Silas had no intention of keeping it.

Yanmega, which looked to him like a less attractive version of Flygon, simply didn't suit his aesthetic preferences. Furthermore, it didn't mesh well with his team composition or type balance.

If others heard his reasoning, they would call him foolish.

Although the champion of the Bug Catching Contest could technically forfeit the special selection privilege at the end, almost nobody did.

After all, winning meant the Pokémon was considered the best of the entire event.

For most Trainers, that was a valuable reinforcement, even as a second- or third-string team member.

But Silas had always valued quality over quantity.

His philosophy was simple: if he captured a Pokémon, he would nurture it properly and keep it by his side.

Rather than forcing himself to take Pokémon he didn't truly like, he preferred partners built on mutual recognition.

After quickly relocating, Silas released Yanmega and Yanma to restore them.

He sprayed healing spray over their bodies, causing the unconscious Pokémon to twitch slightly.

Their red eyes slowly lit up.

The moment Yanmega saw the human before it, it instinctively spread its wings and shielded the confused Yanma behind it.

Silas shook the medicine bottle in his hand. "Relax. I don't mean any harm."

His tone was sincere.

Yanmega, however, did not relax in the slightest.

Unbothered, Silas continued, "I've only captured you temporarily. I'll release you soon. But before that, you'll need to take me to your nest."

The usual rule: the Pokémon wouldn't be taken, but the spoils couldn't be missed.

"Yanmega!"

Yanmega cried out angrily.

"Don't be so reluctant. Risking your life for compensation is perfectly reasonable, right?" Silas tried to persuade it.

Obviously, not all Pokémon understood such concepts. Yanmega looked ready to die before yielding.

"That makes things troublesome," Silas tilted his head. "Ampharos."

"Ampharos!"

Electricity immediately began crackling around Ampharos.

"Yanma…"

Yanma whimpered fearfully from behind Yanmega.

Yanmega hesitated.

"See? Just trading some things you don't even need for your life and your child's freedom. That's fair, isn't it?"

Silas spread his hands like a proper villain. "A win-win."

Yanmega didn't fully understand what "win-win" meant, but it did feel that Silas's argument made some sense.

It absolutely wasn't because the pink Pokémon beside him was swinging a crackling Thunder Punch.

"Yanmega…"

It reluctantly nodded.

Silas clapped his hands. "Excellent. Then please lead the way."

Yanmega glared at him resentfully, pushed itself up on its six legs, and flew toward a certain direction.

Yanma hurriedly followed.

Silas wasn't worried about them escaping or retaliating.

Though they had recovered somewhat, in their current state they couldn't withstand even a single Thunder Shock from Ampharos.

Before long, one human and three Pokémon arrived at the entrance of a modest-sized cave.
