Regarding Lance's request, Silas only thought briefly before agreeing.
"But I may not be able to head over until the day after tomorrow," he said.
Lance considered it. "That's fine. As long as Liza is there, nothing should happen within a day or two. Go the day after tomorrow and check what exactly is going on.
If it really can't be handled, notify me immediately. I should be able to arrive within a day."
Judging by Lance's tone, he was clearly tied up with something.
Silas suspected it was most likely related to Team Rocket.
After exchanging a few more words, they ended the call.
"Troublesome indeed."
Rarely seen without his cape, Lance stood in a forest, looking up at the moon.
"Let's go, Dragonite. Some friends are waiting to greet us."
"Draaa."
The honest, round Dragonite let out a cry and flapped its small wings to follow its Trainer.
Moonlight scattered across the ground.
If one looked carefully, the area around where Lance had stood was filled with unconscious humans and Pokémon.
All the humans wore black uniforms emblazoned with a large red "R."
Their identity was self-evident.
On the other side, unaware that Lance was working overtime, Silas stretched lazily and fell asleep while holding the cool body of Alolan Vulpix.
"ROAAAR!!"
Within the ochre-colored canyon, long and resonant roars echoed continuously.
"Kirlia~"
Floating in midair, Kirlia tried to rise higher out of curiosity to see what Pokémon had made the sound.
A massive black shadow swept past.
Kirlia, who hadn't risen very high yet, immediately dove downward in fright.
The shadow hovered in the air and revealed itself, A Charizard with a pink bow tied atop its head.
"Good morning, Miss Liza," Silas greeted politely, recognizing her at once.
"Good morning."
A heroic-looking young woman with light green hair leaned forward from Charizard's back.
"You must be Trainer Silas, introduced by Mr. Lance. It's a pleasure to meet you."
As she spoke, she leapt directly down from Charizard's back.
"This is my Charizard. You can call her Charla. Little Charla, say hello to our new friend."
"Roaaar."
Charizard swished her flaming tail in a friendly manner.
Seeing that it wasn't an enemy, Kirlia floated back up and began chatting curiously with Charizard.
Wearing a red tube top and red hot pants, Liza looked quite cool and summery. She stepped closer to Silas and sniffed lightly.
"Such a shame. You don't have a Charizard."
Silas blushed slightly and instinctively stepped back half a step.
"Miss Liza's nose really is just like the rumors say."
To ease the awkwardness, he could only reply like that.
Liza laughed.
"Time is short. Let's return to Charicific Valley first."
Silas nodded.
"Fweeet~"
Liza whistled, and Charla, who had been chatting happily with Kirlia, immediately flew down.
"I won't have Charla carry you. You should have a Flying-type partner, right?"
Without waiting for Silas's reply, she patted Charla's back and flew off toward the distance.
Silas hurriedly released Pidgeot and followed.
"Kirlia!"
Kirlia cried out anxiously, her figure flickering repeatedly in midair.
The two Trainers and three Pokémon moved in this somewhat strange formation.
Before long, from atop Pidgeot's back, Silas saw a cliff encircled by blue lake water.
Upon the cliff, jagged rocks formed a majestic and enormous dragon's head.
Faint roars could be heard in the distance.
Liza did not slow down and flew straight toward the area behind the cliff.
Silas and Pidgeot followed closely.
Passing over the dragon head, a canyon filled with rocks and trees came into view.
Charmander.
Charmeleon.
Charizard.
Countless members of these three evolutionary stages lived leisurely within the valley.
Several Charizard noticed the outsiders and were about to fly up to drive them away, but then saw Liza wave her hand.
"Roaaaar."
"Roooar."
Their cries sounded almost disappointed.
A bead of cold sweat formed on Silas's forehead.
Most Fire-type Pokémon tended to be aggressive. Charizard, possessing partial Dragon-type traits and bloodline influence, were even more so.
Among the starter Pokémon, Charizard was widely acknowledged as one of the hardest to command.
Silas had no doubt that if Liza had not brought him here, these Charizard would have torn him to pieces.
No wonder everyone knew of Charicific Valley and knew that Liza was the sole administrator guarding it, yet no one dared attack.
In just half a minute since entering, Silas had already seen at least twenty Charizard.
Several were at the Elite level, and there was even one clearly at Elite Four strength.
The Fire-type starter that was rarely seen in the outside world was as common here as Caterpie.
Not to mention the Charizard deeper within the valley that had yet to reveal themselves.
According to wild Pokémon habits, the stronger individuals occupied better territory. Since the inner region was closer to the core of Charicific Valley, the Charizard there were undoubtedly far stronger than those outside.
Silas found it difficult to imagine what level that might be.
Quasi-Champion?
Champion?
Charla carried Liza down onto an open clearing near a rather casually built house.
That was presumably where Liza lived.
Silas patted Pidgeot's back and landed as well.
Kirlia sat on the ground, panting heavily.
Both Lisa and Pidgeot flew very fast. Even using Teleport required continuous chaining to keep up.
For a recently evolved Kirlia, this was quite difficult.
Ultimately, it came down to insufficient strength, each Teleport covered limited distance, so it had to compensate with frequency.
But it was also excellent training, effectively improving Kirlia's mastery of Teleport.
"Use Calm Mind to recover first. Then return to your Poké Ball," Silas instructed.
Kirlia nodded.
Liza walked over.
"This child is excellent. And your Pidgeot is very strong too. Charla says she's no match for it."
"Kirlia~"
The exhausted Kirlia instantly forgot about its fatigue upon hearing that. Puffing out its chest, it declared that it could keep going.
Silas patted its head and sent it off to play.
"It's good, but it still needs to keep working hard. By the way, Miss Liza, what kind of abnormal situation made you request assistance from Mr. Lance?"
The fact that Liza had brought him in despite him not having a Charizard already proved that the issue was serious.
"Come with me."
Liza didn't explain immediately. Instead, she led him deeper into the valley.
Charicific Valley is a natural park located between Violet City and Azalea Town in the Johto region, and ordinary people are not allowed to enter.
"Ordinary people" here refers to Trainers without a Charizard.
Even Trainers who possess other starter Pokémon are generally not permitted entry by the administrator, Liza.
This place is the sacred land of the Charizard clan.
It is worth mentioning that most of the Charizard in Charicific Valley are wild. Liza merely takes care of them.
Only a very small number belong to outside Trainers who have allowed their Charizard to live here—for example, Ash's Charizard in the future.
The Charizard inside frequently battle one another to improve their strength and status. Each Charizard also specializes in different moves.
"That one is Lei, It excels at Dragon Claw—one slash can easily tear through rock walls.
That one, It specializes in Wing Attack. The scattered rock fragments you see are its handiwork.
That one, Its Overheat can turn rock into magma in an instant."
As Liza led Silas deeper inside, she introduced each Charizard in detail.
Without exception, their response to Silas's greeting was the same, they snorted a burst of flame from their nostrils.
Apparently, that was simply how Charizard liked to greet outsiders.
Silas's eyes gleamed.
Cool. They were just too cool.
He couldn't help himself.
"Miss Liza—"
"No~" Liza interrupted immediately with a smile. "The Charizard here are protected by the League and cannot be captured. Unless you have a special permit, you would first need to defeat them and gain their recognition before you could even attempt to catch one."
Without needing to think, she had already guessed what Silas wanted to say and gently crushed the idea.
Silas sighed.
Well, it was fine. His current team composition wasn't particularly suited to adding a Charizard anyway.
But still, they were incredibly cool.
"We're here."
Liza suddenly stopped walking.
Silas instinctively halted as well.
He looked up and inhaled sharply.
Before him lay a vast expanse of crimson magma, bubbling from time to time.
The air was thick with the scent of sulfur.
"This is…" Silas was visibly shocked.
"The formation of Charicific Valley was caused by a volcanic eruption long ago. But ever since then, the volcano has never erupted again, there haven't even been any warning signs.
That's one of the main reasons the Charizard chose to live here.
However, ten days ago, I discovered unusual fluctuations in the magma pool connected to the volcanic crater behind us.
Originally, the magma level here was only about one-third of its current height. But it has continued to rise, and the temperature has increased as well. At first, many of the stronger Charizard living nearby either moved deeper into the valley or relocated to the outer areas.
So I'm very worried…"
She didn't finish her sentence, but both of them understood what she meant.
Silas frowned slightly.
"As the administrator, aren't you able to enter the deeper areas?"
Liza gave a helpless smile.
"I may be the administrator, but not all the Charizard are willing to listen to me. I'm only familiar with those living on the outskirts.
Some of them are willing to let me enter after moving deeper inside, but quite a few Charizard that have lived there since birth don't welcome me.
Charla is only at the Pesudo-Elite level, so she can't take me too far in."
Silas suddenly understood.
When they first met, he had wondered why Liza's Charla was only Pesudo Elite-level in strength.
Now it made sense.
The Charizard of Charicific Valley didn't need an overly powerful administrator.
