Chapter 17 - Military Resilience

Shanghai, China

President Zhoug Hung of China, in collaboration with his Prime Minister, Xhing Ping, has called upon the nation's military apparatus for urgent intervention. At the center of this mobilization is the People's Liberation Army (PLA), which was formally summoned to active duty by Military Chief Commissioner Jia Woo. Their mission: to provide strategic military aid and humanitarian support in the liberation efforts unfolding in Northern Syria.

Simultaneously, a prominent U.S. attorney traveled to Southern Syria to manage a high-profile legal case involving former President Alder, who once led the nation before falling into political limbo during a constitutional interregnum.

Though initially dismissed as speculation, reports began to circulate soon confirmed that the pandemic had breached the southern Syrian frontier. In a rapid and forceful response, the de facto government deployed an estimated 50,000 troops to seal the borders and launch preemptive operations against any perceived threats—whether human or mechanized. This defensive strategy extended to monitoring and intercepting military aircraft, drones, and any other unauthorized aerial activity.

Behind closed doors, Chinese President Hung held strategic talks with PLA Chief Commissioner Woo. The primary agenda: to finalize the structure of the liberation forces and define the technological warfare systems to be employed. In a show of advanced military readiness, each deployed soldier was equipped with a state-of-the-art robotic exo-suit designed to shield them from potential biohazard exposure.

Meanwhile, in Brazil, former President Alder was compelled to stand trial in the Banju Terran District Court. He faced serious allegations related to his unconstitutional seizure of power. The legal proceedings attracted international attention, especially given the involvement of a top-tier U.S. attorney tasked with mitigating the considerable risk of a long-term incarceration—an outcome deemed likely given the nature of the accusations.

In response to the unfolding regional crisis, Damascus issued a statement via its state-run media outlet, affirming its commitment to stand with the people of Syria. The government pledged to marshal its resources and allies to confront the geopolitical and public health challenges looming on the horizon.

Darkness had become an unrelenting force, invading the state in waves. The demons behind these invasions were no ordinary beasts of chaos. Many were highly intelligent, capable of reading, strategizing, and even mimicking human behaviors. Some were ancient immortals, their knowledge stretching across centuries. Yet, despite their intellectual prowess, they remained deeply secretive. They went to great lengths to ensure that no human, or even most demons, ever uncovered the full extent of their capabilities. Knowledge, after all, was power and power needed to be guarded.

Among them was Wixzer, a demon who once dared to cross into the human world. During his time among mortals, he unlocked the rare and lethal ability to control water, a deadly element to his kind. Water, to demons, was not just a weakness; it was a weapon of annihilation. Had other demons discovered what Wixzer had learned, or suspected he had fraternized with humans to gain such knowledge, his existence would have been erased long ago. Wixzer survived by remaining hidden, his secret locked tightly away.

But secrets can only remain buried for so long.

Zephyr, a powerful figure among the demons, had always trusted Wixzer implicitly. He viewed him not only as a loyal servant but as a confidant, someone he could rely on in a realm defined by betrayal. If the truth ever reached Zephyr that Wixzer had deceived him for years and had dabbled with forbidden powers , the consequences would be catastrophic. Would Zephyr destroy him? Or would loyalty override betrayal?

Meanwhile, in the human resistance, a new plan was beginning to take shape. Azra, one of the key strategists among the humans, proposed a bold move: stealing the highly classified Endorsement File. For Azra, this was more than sabotage , it was the symbolic first step toward reclaiming leadership, and perhaps restoring humanity's fractured spirit.

Most of the surviving human population had clustered in Northern Syria, now a fortified zone heavily protected by joint international military forces. Those who hadn't made it there had fled abroad, scattered across continents. President Bharadi Rubin, a seasoned war leader, introduced a bold countermeasure against the demons: a specialized mask.

This mask wasn't just any protective gear. It was laced with a cooling agent that could liquefy in proximity to a demon's aura exploiting their vulnerability to water. A forward-thinking militant suggested the substance be applied to both coats and helmets for full effectiveness.

To everyone's astonishment, the plan worked. Soldiers equipped with the modified suits managed to hold defensive positions and push back minor incursions. The masks became standard issue along every critical border.

But victory was still fragile. The question now was not if the demons would retaliate, but when. How long could this strategy hold? The world held its breath.

Time would soon tell.....
