Chapter 16 - Day 51

"Honey, get away from the road!"

Crashes. Impact.

Death…

—Ahhh!

Again… another damn dream, memories...

Loss of consciousness.

I'm tired of reliving the same thing. I just want to remember what happened…

The moment I regained all my senses, something rooted itself inside me. Uncertainty. The sound of a caw and a knocking noise started it all.

—Not again…

I found it with my eyes. The man or, rather, the beast. Standing motionless in the middle of the highway. Staring directly at me with its face hidden behind the erratic movements the creature emitted.

It no longer changed appearance; it was simply looking at me… I could feel its lifeless gaze on my body.

—I didn't kill her!

The beast slowly approached, its erratic movements accelerating. My body couldn't move, couldn't react. The creature grabbed me by the throat… lifted me up.

Staring at me, bringing its hidden face closer. My gaze lost among those movements.

I remembered…

Even with little oxygen, with the difficulty of breathing. I managed to speak. I managed to let it out.

—I remember now…

—I was driving…

—It was an accident.

The man tightened his grip around my throat, as if he couldn't stand my words.

—No… it was my fault…

—I tried to stop her…

—I tried to save her…

I remembered perfectly how everything happened; it wasn't my fault, it was a damn accident, IT WAS AN ACCIDENT.

The man pierced one side of my torso without killing me… he only wanted to hurt me, torture me.

—WHAT DO YOU WANT FROM ME?!

—It was a fucking accident, I tried to save her, it's not my fault.

—I miss her

—If she hadn't stepped in…

Pain.

—Aghhh!

Stabbing, tearing…

The man ripped part of my skin with his nails buried in my flesh, scraping slowly, seeking only one thing: to cause as much pain as possible.

—WHAT DO YOU WANT FROM ME?!

—AGHHH!

—DAMN IT!

Little by little he moved toward my arms, then my fingers, trying to break them…

I forced myself to resist, but that only caused more pain in the parts that were being torn apart.

—Aghh!

This pain is only a fraction of what she suffered…

That accident…

It was my fault…

I should have paid attention to the road…

—I… did it…

—I deserve this ending…

At that moment the beast stopped the physical torture, stopped moving its face, stopped hiding it, revealing itself. It was... the one who refused to accept it…

He had suffered the death of his beloved…

It was a memory…

The presence raised a pistol to his head. As he looked at me, I noticed an emotion in his eyes. The guilt had disappeared, leaving only sadness. That was the last image of the presence before pulling the trigger.

The sound of the gunshot made me close my eyes for an instant.

A single second in which memories, past and present became one, revealing the consequences…

An instant in which a life disappeared.
