On the first day, Kaya woke with her entire body stiff and aching from sleeping on stone covered only by a thin layer of dried grass. Her breath misted in the cold air, and her fingers were numb when she tried to flex them.
"We need better insulation," she said, her teeth chattering slightly. "Blankets, furs, something. Or we're going to freeze to death before winter even properly arrives."
Veer, who seemed less affected by the cold thanks to his feathered beast form, nodded. "There are animals in these mountains. Deer-like creatures with thick fur. If we can bring down one or two, we could use the pelts."
"Then that's today's priority," Kaya decided. "Food and warmth. Everything else can wait."
