As Kahn spoke, the forest began a mysterious transformation. Countless face-like patterns emerged across trees, grass, and even animals like butterflies and bats.
The faces were abstract yet vivid, as if alive, evoking both strangeness and sacredness, filling the heart with peace.
Misu knew this phenomenon well—it was the prelude to the Face Mother's arrival.
But now, something new appeared: a giant wolf Spirit, sitting calmly by the lake, watching them without lowering its head to drink, as described in ancient texts.
Then, masks with varying expressions—like floating souls—covered the lake's surface.
The water surged, forming a towering pillar, which eventually shaped into a majestic figure before them.
"I am the Face Mother," she said.
Misu, heart pounding with shock and excitement, bowed deeply.
"Thank you for your arrival, great Face Mother."
Like other Spirits, the Face Mother possessed an extraordinary appearance.
Her lower body merged with the lake, while her upper body seemed woven from dense vines, with expressive spiritual masks floating around her.
She had three faces, their eyes veiled by the vines, exuding mystery, but her lower visible faces displayed a softness uniquely feminine.
The Face Mother turned to Kahn, her voice calm and dignified.
"Every season, I traverse my forest, never stepping where the wolf does not lead me—but now I make an exception for you, young Spiritbender."
Kahn bowed respectfully.
"Thank you for your kindness, and for forgiving my offense, generous Face Mother."
The Face Mother nodded, pleased with his attitude.
"Indeed, you are polite and pleasant to communicate with, unlike many humans. You Spiritbenders seek our help not for yourselves, but to aid others.
Such nobility is commendable, and this is why I make an exception. Young Spiritbender, have you come to help others?"
Kahn felt a flush of shame; he wasn't that noble. Yet this time, he truly was helping others, giving him confidence.
"Yes," he replied calmly. "I seek your help to understand something for a friend."
Misu added softly, "Great Face Mother, I am here to heal my brother…"
Kahn's eye twitched. He sensed a trace of anger in the Face Mother.
Spirits' emotions are reflected in their being; a skilled Spiritbender can detect these subtle changes.
Kahn's heart sank. Something was amiss.
Sure enough, the Face Mother spoke:
"Each season, I grant only one human one request. This is unchangeable."
Only one request?
Kahn felt awkward and looked to Misu.
Misu was equally astonished but finally understood. She sighed, smiling wryly:
"Kahn, you go. After all, you summoned the Face Mother; it has nothing to do with us. We'll wait for the next season."
Kahn breathed a sigh of relief. Though he didn't want to miss the opportunity, Misu's gracious choice prevented awkwardness. Yet he felt guilty for wasting her excitement.
At that moment, Kahn recalled some ancient texts he had studied with Azula, which suggested an intriguing idea.
"Great Face Mother, we will not violate your rules, but please look at her brother's face. I think you might find it interesting."
He gestured for Misu to remove Rafa's mask. Though puzzled, she trusted Kahn and complied.
Rafa's face was astonishing—completely blank, faceless, a living empty canvas.
"Rafa was attacked by an evil Spirit. It stole his face, leaving him like this."
The Face Mother's initial impatience shifted to interest. Observing Rafa carefully, she said.
"That evil Spirit you mention… should be my son."
"Your son?!"
The revelation shocked everyone. Kahn had read of a connection between the two in ancient texts, but he had never imagined it was literal.
The Face Mother reached out, touching Rafa's face.
"He began distancing himself from me since the beginning of the world, and I have not seen him in a long time. But this technique… is familiar to me."
A soft glow emanated from her palm, and Rafa began faintly whimpering. When the Face Mother removed her hand, his normal face had returned.
"Sister."
Rafa smiled at Misu. That single word brought tears to her eyes as they embraced, weeping with joy.
The Face Mother turned to Kahn.
"So, clever Spiritbender, what is your request?"
Kahn bowed again, smiling with relief.
"Thank you, generous Face Mother. I seek the Fire Nation's imperial concubine, Ursa. I request any clues you may have regarding her."
The Face Mother did not disappoint.
"Ursa… I remember her. She had a beautiful face but asked me for a new one, which surprised me. I granted her an ordinary face, and she accepted it."
She displayed Ursa's original face, then the ordinary face she had given her.
Kahn was shocked. That ordinary face was familiar—
"Noriko!?
"Noriko is Ursa?!"
