Half a year passed in the blink of an eye.
During this time, Kahn's primary focus was Spiritbending, striving to gain enough skill to locate the Face Mother—and through her, finally track down Ursa.
Even so, because he occasionally had to carry out Ozai's missions, his learning was intermittent, stretching the process to a full six months.
After deciding their strategy against Ozai, the team had more responsibilities during missions.
They worked hard to expand their influence, occasionally selecting "talents" for Ozai, much like Yudan, who Azula had once chosen.
Those deemed useless—or potential future enemies—were suppressed without hesitation, nipped in the bud.
Once Mai and Ty Lee joined the mission team, operations became increasingly smooth.
Kahn could even afford brief moments of downtime during missions to continue practicing Spiritbending.
East, South, West, and North had now grown accustomed to life in the Human Realm, happily declaring themselves Kahn's loyal companions—his "Pokémon," as they jokingly put it.
Meanwhile, Iroh and Zuko's quest to find the Avatar had yielded nothing so far. According to Zuko, however, his travels had allowed him to reflect deeply.
He realized his past ideas had been naive, and perhaps influenced by Iroh, he had become an anti-war advocate, believing the Fire Nation's current actions—and many of Ozai's decisions—were dangerously wrong.
Kahn listened without committing, only sighing at how much Zuko had changed. Travel, he thought, truly broadened the mind. He also wanted to travel more.
Returning to the main task, after half a year of focused cultivation, Kahn had made significant progress in Spiritbending.
Spiritbending, a means for humans to communicate with spirits, did not have many complex techniques, but each was extremely powerful.
For instance, communicating with animals.
While most animals lacked rational thought or complex speech, they were sensitive to danger. By observing them, one could anticipate disasters and avoid them.
This was the original intent of the ancients who developed Spiritbending, though its use depended entirely on the practitioner.
Another example was the mind-to-mind communication Guru Pathik had used with Kahn.
Its range was limited, but had it been broader, Kahn could have arranged for remote lessons—a highly convenient approach.
The ability Kahn most coveted—seeing directly into people's hearts—was far beyond his reach.
This high-level application required opening all seven chakras, something he could not attempt yet.
His mental training was progressing steadily, though not without obstacles.
The search for Ursa had become an obsession, a mental hurdle. But considering the stakes, it was understandable.
Kahn speculated that once Ursa's whereabouts were discovered and the truth of that fateful year revealed, he might finally be ready to attempt opening the seven chakras.
Most importantly, Kahn had finally learned how to locate the Face Mother. With that, the search for Ursa could resume in earnest.
No need to delay—he set off immediately.
Riding on Nike' back toward Worryless Valley, he recalled that the journey had once taken five or six days. Now, it took less than one—a fact that filled him with quiet emotion.
Flying over Hira Town, Kahn thought of Noren and Noriko, the couple who had warmly welcomed him, and the little girl Kiyi, who was practically half his disciple—a truly happy family.
He had intended to visit, but decided that completing this mission took priority. It could wait.
Arriving at Forget-Worry Valley, the forest was as peaceful as ever.
Yet compared to when he had first entered as a Spiritbending novice, he now noticed its subtle anomalies.
The Face Mother's three lakes were dense with [Spirits], which had spread throughout the forest, giving it faintly spirit-like qualities.
In the past, following Iroh's teachings, Kahn had entered with respect and friendliness, feeling only peace and encountering no disturbances.
However, the forest was quick to react to ill intent: any malicious presence would provoke the plants and animals to frenzy, driving out or killing intruders.
Kahn harbored no ill will, but he couldn't help imagining how Ozai's agents might have fared here years ago—likely in chaos and finding nothing.
As he entered the forest, he unexpectedly saw Misu and her brother Rafa again. Rafa's injury had yet to heal, and he still wore a mask.
Kahn asked, slightly surprised.
"Haven't you encountered the Face Mother yet?"
Misu shook her head, offering a bitter smile.
"Our luck has never been great. I've learned to accept it. But Kahn, long time no see."
"Hmm, Misu, Rafa, long time no see."
They shared a smile, rekindling their small friendship.
Misu invited Kahn to their camp, now relocated to another lake.
She recounted their experiences since he had left. Their luck had indeed been terrible.
Since arriving, they had witnessed five potential appearances of the Face Mother, but had chosen the wrong lake each time.
With a one-third chance per lake, missing five times in a row was truly unlucky.
Now they awaited their sixth opportunity.
"Kahn, you've come at just the right time. The Face Mother hasn't appeared this season yet. You can wait with us. This way, at least one of us will meet her for sure."
Misu was glad for Kahn's presence, happy for companionship despite her usual bond with her brother.
Kahn shook his head, smiling mysteriously.
"I don't have much time to wait this round, but I've prepared other methods."
This mission, besides helping him find Ursa, could also assist the siblings—a two-birds-one-stone scenario.
Curious, Misu watched as Kahn sat cross-legged at the lake's edge, meditating. He connected his [Spirit] with that of the lake water.
As the site where the Face Mother appeared, the lake retained traces of her aura, a clue to her whereabouts.
Just then, a voice echoed.
"A Spiritbender? It's been a long time since I've seen one."
