This thing wouldn't cost him his life, but even a slight touch would strip away a segment of his memory. If he were submerged entirely in the waters of the Nether River, even his personality would undergo drastic changes. Most creatures can't escape the effects of the Nether River; even Divine Spirits might have their memories washed away, and if all memories are thoroughly cleansed, the individual would be assimilated by the river's law, leading to unpredictable personality distortions.
The Nether River is the primary transport channel in the Lower Plane, and in the absence of a specific Divine System maintaining the operation of the Netherworld, the river continues flowing to the deepest layer of Purgatory, directly connecting to the Source Sea where souls are born.
