Chapter 181 — The Man Beyond Time
Nothing moved.
The leaves remained suspended in the air.
The dust from Shen's battle with Synthia hung motionless like tiny stars.
The palace heartbeat had vanished.
Only Shen and the mysterious figure could move.
Shen tightened his grip on his sword.
"...Who are you?"
The figure smiled faintly.
"A question every carrier asks."
"And one I never answer first."
His voice was calm—not powerful, not threatening.
Simply certain.
Shen looked around.
"Lare..."
No response.
"Synthia..."
She remained frozen exactly as she had been.
"You stopped time?"
"I paused this layer of it," the man replied. "True time cannot be stopped."
Shen frowned.
"There's a difference?"
"A very large one."
The stranger slowly walked toward the center of the courtyard.
"You've been told many truths."
"The Arthas Symbols."
"The Source."
"Aran."
"The Convergence."
"The Architect."
"They are all true."
He paused.
"But they are not the whole truth."
Shen remained silent.
"The greatest danger," the stranger continued, "is not what people know."
"It is believing they know everything."
---
The man looked toward the palace.
"Tell me, Shen."
"Who built this place?"
"The Architect."
"Incorrect."
"The Wolf King designed it."
"The Architect completed it."
The man nodded.
"Good."
"And who created the Arthas Symbols?"
"Artha."
"The Founder God."
"The Protector."
"Correct."
The stranger smiled again.
"And who created Artha?"
Silence.
Shen blinked.
"...No one."
"Every beginning has a beginning."
The stranger's words echoed through the frozen world.
Shen's heart skipped once.
"What do you mean?"
"Artha was the first Protector."
"But he was not the first existence."
---
The stranger raised one finger.
The air rippled.
Above them appeared countless glowing spheres.
Universes.
Millions.
Billions.
Each floated like stars in an endless ocean.
"This..."
"...is only one layer."
Shen stared speechlessly.
"Our universe is one among countless others."
"Each has its own gods."
"Its own protectors."
"Its own history."
"And above all of them..."
He pointed higher.
The universes became impossibly small.
"...another world."
Shen slowly whispered,
"So the Universe of Gods..."
"...isn't the highest world?"
"No."
"It is merely the highest world your current existence can understand."
---
The stranger turned toward Shen.
"You've heard of the Five Sides."
"The North."
"The South."
"The East."
"The West."
"The Neutral Forest."
"They are ancient."
"But they are children compared to what exists above them."
Shen remembered Lare's explanation.
"So Lare..."
"...only knows part of history."
"He knows everything that can be known from inside this universe."
The stranger answered gently.
"There is a difference."
---
Shen asked quietly,
"Who are you?"
The man laughed softly.
"Still trying."
"I am not a god."
"I am not an administrator."
"I am not one of the rankings Lare described."
"Then what are you?"
"I am..."
He stopped.
"...a Witness."
"I exist to observe moments where history may change."
Shen narrowed his eyes.
"So you're watching me."
"I have watched every carrier."
"Aran."
"You."
"And those before him."
"There were others?"
The stranger nodded.
"Many."
"None reached the end."
---
Shen felt a chill.
"The Architect said Aran was the first."
"The first to awaken all eighteen symbols."
The stranger corrected him.
"Not the first carrier."
"The first successful carrier."
"There is a difference."
Shen remained completely still.
"So many..."
"Failed before even reaching ten."
---
The mysterious man looked toward the frozen sky.
"The Arcane threat..."
"...is real."
"But it is not the enemy."
Shen frowned.
"What?"
"The Arcane are only soldiers."
"They serve something older."
"Something that even Artha could not destroy."
Shen's breathing slowed.
"Then..."
"...what is the real enemy?"
The stranger's smile disappeared.
"The Empty Throne."
Silence.
"It has no king."
"No ruler."
"No body."
"But everything in existence moves because it remains empty."
Shen could not understand.
"The day someone sits upon that throne..."
"...every law in every universe will change."
---
The stranger looked directly into Shen's eyes.
"Your convergence..."
"...is not meant to defeat the Arcane."
"It is meant to prepare you."
"For what?"
The answer came quietly.
"For choosing."
"The same choice Artha once faced."
Shen's expression hardened.
"What choice?"
The stranger slowly stepped backward.
"You are not ready to hear it."
The frozen world trembled.
Time began to move again.
One heartbeat.
Then another.
The stranger's body faded into white light.
"When the eighteenth symbol awakens..."
"We will meet again."
He smiled one last time.
"And next time..."
"I will tell you my name."
He vanished.
The wind returned.
Dust fell.
Leaves continued drifting to the ground.
Lare blinked.
"...What just happened?"
Synthia looked around in confusion.
"The palace..."
"...felt different for a moment."
Shen looked at the place where the mysterious man had stood.
He said nothing.
Because he knew one thing with absolute certainty.
Someone beyond the Universe of Gods...
...was watching him.
