The night was calm, almost unnaturally so. Waves lapped gently against the shore, and the stars shone cold and distant above the island. Rael sat on a boulder, knees drawn up, gaze lost at the horizon.

A map lay open beside him, drawn in intricate detail from Long Ring Island to their next stop. Routes, currents, and islands sprawled across the parchment, but Rael's mind was not just on the journey.

He exhaled softly.

"Tomorrow, I push them further," he murmured. "They need to be able to survive… no matter what comes."

He did not know the girls had made a little pact of their own.

The Bet

Hours ago, while practicing their new energy sensing drills, frustration had boiled over.

"Ugh!" Vivi groaned, clutching her head as yet another attempt to sense the faint flow of energy around her failed. "I can't feel anything!"

Robin's arms twitched, forming a partial lattice. "Neither can I. How is this even possible?"

Kaya's cane thumped on the sand. "We've been at this for hours… maybe we're just… hopeless."

Then Robin smirked. "What if… we made it interesting?"

The two other girls looked up sharply.

Robin leaned in, eyes glinting mischievously. "First one of us to actually sense something… wins."

Vivi blinked. "Wins… what?"

Robin's grin widened. "The winner gets… Rael body for a night."

Kaya gasped, blushing furiously. "R-Robin! That's… that's insane!"

Vivi's face lit up, and a fire sparked in her eyes. "Fine! You're on!"

From that moment, their exhaustion transformed into determination. The failures no longer frustrated them—they drove them harder.

Hours of Practice

Rael was unaware of the bet. He only observed them practicing, trying to detect the subtle ebb and flow of energy around objects, living creatures, and the environment.

They failed… again and again.

Robin reached out mentally, but the energy slipped through her fingers like water.

Vivi strained, breathing hard, but all she could sense was her own heartbeat.

Kaya froze repeatedly, imagining flows, but nothing registered.

The night deepened. Fireflies flickered in the edges of the forest. The waves whispered secrets the girls couldn't yet hear.

But they didn't stop.

The Breakthrough

Hours passed.

Rael had drifted back to the boulder, staring at the horizon and planning the next leg of their journey, when a sound made him glance up.

A quiet gasp.

Then, a slow, amazed whisper:

"I… I feel it."

All three girls froze.

Vivi's eyes widened. "Wait… which one of you—?"

Robin's gaze darted to Kaya. Kaya's cane trembled slightly. "It… it's coming from the boulder… the energy… there!"

Vivi shook her head. "No! I sensed it first!"

Robin smiled faintly, calm as ever. "I win."

Kaya groaned. "That's not fair! I was just… close!"

Robin's lattice of arms shimmered slightly under the moonlight. "Close doesn't count."

Vivi pouted, but there was fire in her eyes. "Fine. I'll beat you next time."

Kaya laughed weakly, exhausted but determined. "I'll get there eventually."

And Rael… still unaware of the stakes, simply looked at Robin, noting how her posture had subtly changed, how the energy she sensed wasn't just vague anymore—it had a shape, a presence, a weight.

She had done it.

The Morning Match

Dawn broke with golden light, spilling over the island. The girls were already awake, stretching and ready, anticipation crackling between them.

Rael sat on a boulder, arms crossed, observing. "Today, we test it."

He gestured toward a cleared area. "I want to see how you use what you sensed last night. Spar. Protect yourselves. Apply your awareness to combat—not just to sense."

Robin went first, moving with her Shadow Bind Flow interwoven with her newfound perception. She could detect Rael's approach slightly before he moved, allowing her arms to adjust more quickly. It wasn't perfect—but it was progress.

Vivi flicked her wrist, pebble in hand. She sensed the tension in Rael's muscles, allowing her to anticipate where the next flick would need to go. Pebbles hit closer to their targets than ever before.

Kaya moved with careful precision. She still lagged behind physically, but she could sense Rael's intent and shift her weight just enough to avoid his feints and strikes.

Rael nodded slowly. "Better. Much better. You're not perfect yet, but…"

He paused, smiling faintly. "…you can protect yourselves now. Not completely, but enough that you don't get folded instantly. That's progress."

Evening Reflection

As the sun set, Rael returned to the boulder, staring at the horizon again.

The girls were cleaning up their practice areas, laughing softly and teasing one another about last night's bet—still unaware he didn't know about it.

He traced the route on the map again, thinking ahead.

Next stop. What skills should I focus on? Who has the potential for something greater?

He knew the training could only go so far.

Tomorrow, he would push them further. Not just in technique—but in control, awareness, and the subtle manipulation of power—the kind he had mastered in another life.

Their journey to survival had only just begun.

And for the first time, he felt the weight of responsibility—not just as a teacher—but as someone who would guide them to a strength beyond ordinary limits.
