Chapter 111 - Chapter 102 — When the Quiet Breaks

The fourth night came quietly.

Too quietly.

Ethan noticed it first.

He stood on the roof again, arms folded, eyes moving across the town. Lamps were lit. People still talked. A few guards—townsfolk with borrowed weapons—stood at corners like they had been doing since the girls helped organize them.

Everything looked normal.

And that was the problem.

The wind felt wrong.

The town sounded… muted.

Not afraid.

Not calm.

Just waiting.

Ethan exhaled slowly.

"They're coming," he muttered.

Below, inside the house, Vivi was laughing—tired laughter, the kind that came after a long day of helping repair walls and teaching people how to stand together. Kaya was cleaning her cane carefully, movements slow but focused. Robin sat near the lantern, reading but clearly listening to everything around her.

Ethan dropped down from the roof.

Robin looked up instantly. "Something changed."

"Yeah," Ethan said. "Wake the others. Quietly."

Vivi blinked. "What's wrong?"

"Nothing yet," Ethan replied. "And that's what worries me."

The First Move

It started at the edge of town.

A scream—cut short.

Then another.

A bell rang once.

Then stopped.

Robin stood. "They're testing the response."

Kaya's face paled. "The captain?"

"Or his people," Ethan said. "Either way, this isn't random."

Vivi clenched her fists. "Then we move."

Ethan nodded. "Together. Don't chase. Don't split unless I say so."

They stepped into the street.

Torches flickered as townsfolk peeked out from windows. Some held weapons now—simple ones, but real.

"Stay inside," Ethan said firmly to a man near the door. "Barricade."

The man nodded and shut it without arguing.

That alone showed how much had changed.

They reached the edge of the market square when shadows peeled away from the alleys.

Not loud pirates.

Not reckless ones.

These moved with purpose.

Five of them.

One stepped forward. "There they are."

Vivi's heart pounded. "They're not like the others."

Robin's eyes narrowed. "Executives."

Ethan stepped slightly ahead of them. "Good. That saves time."

Clash in the Square

The pirates attacked without insults, without laughter.

Steel rang.

Vivi dodged, barely, as a blade passed too close. She countered the way she'd practiced—sharp, controlled, fast enough to force the man back.

Kaya stayed close to Robin, redirecting strikes, breaking balance instead of meeting force. Her movements weren't graceful—but they worked.

Robin immobilized one pirate instantly, slamming him into the ground hard enough to knock the air from his lungs.

But these men didn't panic.

They adapted.

One moved wide, trying to circle behind.

Ethan noticed.

He moved.

No flash. No show.

One step.

One strike.

The pirate crumpled.

The remaining men froze for half a second.

That half second was everything.

Vivi took one down.

Kaya tripped another and struck his wrist hard.

Silence returned to the square.

Breathing echoed.

Vivi stared at the man Ethan had taken down. "…I didn't even see you move."

Ethan looked at her. "That's because you were focused. That's good."

Robin turned her head slowly. "This wasn't the main force."

"No," Ethan agreed. "This was a message."

The Message Answered

It came back fast.

An explosion rocked the far side of town.

Fire.

Smoke.

People screamed.

"They hit the storage area," Kaya said, horror in her voice.

Ethan's jaw tightened. "Distraction."

More shadows moved.

This time—too many.

Ethan raised a hand. "Robin, left. Vivi, center. Kaya, stay close to me."

They moved without arguing.

Fighting broke out across the street.

This wasn't clean anymore.

This was messy.

Vivi took a hit to the shoulder but stayed standing. Kaya froze for a moment—then remembered Ethan's voice and moved, redirecting an attack meant for her into empty space.

Robin was everywhere at once.

Ethan stayed near them—but now he was moving more.

The pirates noticed.

One of them shouted, "That guy's not weak!"

Too late.

Below the Island

Deep underground, the captain stood listening to reports.

"They're resisting harder than expected," an executive said, bleeding from a cut on his head. "The man… he's not normal."

The captain's eyes narrowed slightly.

"I told you not to underestimate him."

Another executive growled, "We should've killed him first."

"Yes," the captain said calmly. "And now we'll do it properly."

The quiet executive—the one who felt something familiar—spoke again. "Captain… I think I know who he is."

The captain finally looked at him. "Speak."

"…Ethan," the man said slowly. "I've seen that face before. Long ago."

The captain's expression didn't change.

"Then we stop playing," he said. "Prepare the inner guard."

Above ground—

The island burned.

And the real battle had begun.

Holding the Line

By the time dawn crept over the sea, the streets were scarred.

Broken stone. Burned crates. Blood washed away by buckets of water.

But the town still stood.

Vivi sat on the steps of the house, exhausted. "I can't feel my arms."

Kaya leaned beside her, shaking but smiling faintly. "We didn't run."

Robin stood, surveying the damage. "They're testing us. Learning."

Ethan looked toward the center of the island.

"The captain knows now," he said. "And he won't wait anymore."

Vivi swallowed. "Are we ready?"

Ethan looked at all three of them.

"Not completely," he said honestly. "But you're ready enough."

The sun rose higher.

Somewhere beneath the island, plans shifted.

And the next move would decide everything.
