Morning light spilled over the island, pale and calm, but it was deceiving. Birds chirped as if nothing was wrong, children played near repaired streets, and the scent of fresh bread from the townsfolk's kitchens filled the air.
Vivi yawned, stretching her arms. "I never thought helping a town would be this exhausting."
Kaya laughed quietly, balancing her cane. "And we're just getting started. Look at all the streets we still haven't cleared."
Robin walked ahead, scanning the streets with calm precision. "We've made progress, but there's still resistance. Pirates won't disappear overnight."
Ethan, following a few steps behind, folded his arms. "They won't. That's why you all need to stay sharp. Every victory matters, even the small ones."
Vivi turned to him with determination. "We're ready. We've been training."
Ethan's lips curled into a small, approving smile. "Good. But don't let that make you overconfident."
A Plan for Efficiency
After breakfast, the girls gathered near the small town square.
"We've cleared most of the streets near the docks," Kaya said. "But the outer areas… there are still some hiding spots."
Vivi tilted her head. "What if we split up? We could cover more ground faster."
Robin raised an eyebrow. "That's risky."
Vivi shook her head. "We're ready. Ethan trusts us."
Kaya nodded. "We can handle it. We won't run into anything too strong."
Ethan considered it for a moment. "If you all stick to your areas and keep communication through signals, I agree. But don't underestimate anything."
"Understood," the three said in unison.
They split into their designated zones. Vivi took the northern sector—streets lined with abandoned stalls and overgrown walls.
Unseen by them, in the shadows of the far edge of the island, a man smiled coldly.
"Let's finish this," he muttered.
He was one of the strongest executives working for the pirate captain. His name was Kurotsu. Calm, calculating, and ruthless, he had been waiting for the right moment to strike.
The sun reflected off his knife blade as he scanned the path ahead. "Vivi… the little firecracker," he murmured. "You'll make this interesting."
The First Encounter
Vivi moved carefully through the streets, eyes sharp. She could see every movement, hear every sound. Her heart raced—not out of fear, but anticipation.
A sudden shuffle behind a pile of crates caught her attention. She spun, pulling a small dagger from her belt.
"Come out," she called. Her voice was steady.
A shadow stepped forward. Kurotsu.
"Vivi," he said, tilting his head. "I've heard a lot about you." His lips curved into a smirk. "Let's see if the stories are true."
Vivi's grip tightened. "I'm not scared of you."
Kurotsu's smirk widened. "Good. Confidence is cute. But it won't save you."
He lunged first—fast, precise, knife aimed for her torso. Vivi sidestepped, barely, rolling to the side and slashing at his leg. The blade grazed his shin, drawing a thin line of blood.
He hissed and grinned. "Not bad."
The fight began in earnest. Kurotsu moved like water—graceful but deadly. Every attack was calculated, every feint meant to break her rhythm. Vivi responded with what she had learned, darting, striking, evading.
Learning Under Pressure
Vivi blocked another swing, the sound of metal scraping against metal ringing in her ears. She staggered back, forcing herself to remember her training.
"Focus on speed, not strength," she muttered, echoing Ethan's words from yesterday.
Kurotsu laughed low. "That's all you've got?"
Vivi gritted her teeth. Her hands glowed faintly as she channeled her energy into a more controlled strike. A precise jab at his side sent him stumbling back slightly.
"Better," he admitted, regaining his balance. "But still sloppy."
Vivi's eyes narrowed. "I'm not sloppy."
They circled each other in the narrow street, each waiting for the other to make a mistake. Vivi ducked under a swing, rolled to her feet, and struck with a series of fast, sharp blows. Kurotsu deflected them easily but stumbled when her last strike grazed his shoulder.
"You're improving," he said quietly, almost impressed.
Vivi felt a spark of hope. "Then I'll keep improving."
A Tactical Retreat?
Kurotsu suddenly leaped back and landed on a higher ledge above the street. "Cute tricks, little girl. But you're out of your depth here."
Vivi looked up, breathing hard. "I'm not done yet!"
The narrow streets offered her little cover. She realized she would have to adjust, use her environment. Old crates, broken barrels, walls—they could all be tools.
She grabbed a discarded piece of wood and swung it as a makeshift staff, keeping Kurotsu at a slight distance.
"Better," he said, chuckling. "Resourceful."
He dropped from the ledge with deadly speed, but Vivi pivoted, sidestepped, and struck his knee with the wooden staff. Kurotsu grunted, then laughed. "You've got spirit. I'll give you that."
Tension Rising
Vivi's breathing grew heavier, sweat trickling down her face. Every strike, every dodge, every movement felt like life or death.
She remembered Ethan's words. Don't lose your guard.
And she couldn't. Not now.
Kurotsu lunged again, fast—too fast for most—but Vivi was ready. She leapt to the side, swung the staff at his wrist, knocking the knife from his hand.
He grinned, pulling out another blade. "Oh, so you can fight," he said. "Good. I was hoping you could at least make this fun."
Vivi's eyes burned. "Fun? For you maybe. I'm fighting to protect people, not play games!"
The words seemed to surprise him for a moment. He tilted his head. "Protect people? Cute. You have fire."
And fire, he knew, could be dangerous.
The Fight Intensifies
Kurotsu rushed forward, now serious. Each swing of his knife was faster, sharper, designed to overwhelm. Vivi blocked, rolled, spun—each movement a test of her endurance and skill.
She remembered Robin's training, Kaya's advice, Ethan's guidance.
She could fight. Not perfectly, but she could fight.
The two clashed in a dance of energy and skill, kicking up dust and knocking over crates. The sound of battle echoed through the narrow streets, and Vivi felt alive—terrified, but alive.
Every time Kurotsu attacked, she felt herself learning. Adjusting. Improving.
She dodged a strike aimed at her stomach, spun behind him, and struck his back with the wooden staff. He grunted and stumbled.
Vivi smiled slightly. I can do this.
Kurotsu laughed, straightened, and drew a third knife. "You're stubborn," he said. "I like that. But stubborn doesn't win fights."
Vivi's grip tightened. "Neither does cowardice."
The Endgame Begins
The fight continued, each strike, each dodge, teaching Vivi something new about herself and her limits. She was exhausted, sweat-drenched, but her resolve never wavered.
From the shadows, Ethan watched, his eyes narrowed. Not interfering yet. He wanted her to feel the edge, to grow, to push herself.
"She's improving," he muttered. "Just enough to handle low-tier pirates… but this isn't the real test."
Vivi circled Kurotsu, every muscle tense. "I'll win," she whispered to herself. "I won't let anyone hurt this town."
Kurotsu smirked again, sensing the determination. "You've got heart. I can see that. But heart alone isn't enough."
They clashed again, the sound of metal and wood ringing off the stone walls. Dust, sweat, and adrenaline mixed together as the fight raged.
And in the shadows of the island, other executives watched, waiting for their chance. The captain hadn't appeared, but the plan was already in motion.
Vivi didn't know it yet—but her fight was only the beginning.
