Chapter 95 - Chapter 96: A Shield of Silver and Blossoms

POV: Ren

The morning after the hand-kiss with Airi left me still lightheaded, I quietly ate breakfast while Astraea sat across the table, reading. Her silver hair caught the sunlight as always, and she watched me with calm, unspoken attention.

Our home was peaceful. My mother hummed softly in the kitchen, but Astraea's gaze never left me.

"You're going to see Airi today, aren't you?" she asked, voice quiet.

I nodded, lowering my spoon. "Her parents invited me for lunch."

A faint crease formed between her brows. "Lunch."

"Yes… they want to talk more about the future."

She folded her book and placed it gently on the table. Rising, she walked around and sat beside me, her presence a quiet comfort.

"You've always been kind," she said softly, her fingers brushing mine briefly. "That kindness is your strength, Ren."

I looked up, searching her face.

She smiled, just a little. "And I'll always be here. To protect you."

Later, at Airi's house, warmth and soft light filled the rooms. Her mother greeted me with a genuine smile, and Airi herself appeared radiant, wearing a white dress that shimmered in the afternoon sun.

"Ren!" she called, rushing into a hug. Her scent—fresh flowers and strawberries—wrapped around me like a gentle breeze.

"I missed you," she whispered, eyes shining.

"I… I saw you yesterday," I said softly.

"That doesn't change how much I want to be with you," she said, taking my hand.

Her parents welcomed me with quiet smiles and polite questions. Over lunch, the conversation flowed naturally, though I noticed Airi's eyes lingered on me more than once.

After the meal, her father spoke. "Ren, you've brought joy to our daughter. We're grateful."

"I care about her deeply," I replied, feeling shy.

Her mother smiled warmly. "We thought a short trip together might be good this summer. Something safe and supervised."

Airi's cheeks flushed as she added, "We could go to the lake, stay in a cottage, watch fireflies… just the two of us."

My face burned bright red. "I—I'll ask my mother."

Back home, Astraea awaited me by the door.

She didn't speak at first, only reached out and took my hands in hers.

"Did she touch you?" she asked softly.

"Just a hug," I said quickly.

She nodded and smiled faintly. "Good."

Her hand squeezed mine gently, a silent promise.

"You're always so gentle," she said, voice filled with something like pride. "And I love that about you."

I smiled back, feeling a quiet warmth spread inside me.

POV: Ren

The days that stretched before me felt like the fragile threads of a spider's web — delicate yet tenacious. Each morning arrived with soft light filtering through my curtains, gently waking me as if urging patience. Outside, the seasons slowly shifted toward summer, and with it came an invitation that fluttered in my mind like a restless bird: the trip to the lake with Airi and her family.

A simple trip. Yet, simple things often carried the weight of worlds for me.

As I dressed for school, I glanced down at my hands — hands that had held empires, commanded goddesses, and rewritten the very fabric of my existence. But today, they were just the hands of a boy about to embark on something profoundly human and uncertain.

The invitation from Airi's parents had been both a blessing and a challenge. A chance to step further into the life I projected — the boy with a fiancée, living a normal, gentle existence. And yet, every step toward normalcy felt like walking a tightrope stretched thin over dark chasms of secret kingdoms, boundless power, and the cold gaze of eternal watchers.

The lake trip promised sunlit days, laughter beneath a sky full of fireflies, and the soft intimacy of nights spent side by side. But to me, it was a battlefield where my every movement might unravel the careful mask I wore.

At home, the quiet hum of everyday life continued, but I knew Astraea's presence was my strongest tether to sanity.

She was sitting in the garden when I found her that evening — the air fragrant with blooming jasmine and the faint rustle of leaves in the night breeze. Silver hair spilled over her shoulders, catching the moonlight like strands of stardust. Her golden eyes reflected calm and something older — an ancient wisdom that softened the sharp edges of my restless mind.

"Ren," she said without turning, her voice a soothing thread in the stillness, "the trip is approaching. Have you thought about what you want from it?"

I sank onto the stone bench beside her, the coldness grounding me. "I want to be with Airi… to show her that I care. But I'm afraid I'll stumble, say the wrong things, or that I won't be enough."

She turned to face me then, her gaze direct but gentle. "You've always been enough, Ren. Enough more than most could hope to be."

I swallowed hard. "But kindness… softness… I worry they'll see me as weak."

Astraea's hand found mine, warm and steady. "Kindness is not weakness. It is a strength forged in quiet fires. You wield it with more power than you realize."

Her words settled over me like a warm cloak wrapped against a chill wind.

"I'll be careful," I promised, voice barely above a whisper.

She smiled, faint but certain, and squeezed my hand. "And I will be here. Always."

The next morning, at school, the usual hum of voices and footsteps buzzed around me. But beneath the surface, I could sense the currents of curiosity swirling among friends and classmates.

Rumors had already begun: a summer trip with Airi, a chance for the two of us to be alone outside the confining walls of school and home.

Some teased me lightheartedly — "Don't forget to bring sunscreen, Ren!" or "Better watch out, Airi's got the upper hand!" — while others watched with quiet anticipation.

I smiled politely at all of it but felt an unfamiliar flutter of nerves knotting my stomach.

It was strange — to be the center of attention not because of power or secrets, but simply because of a promise made between two young hearts.

After class, Airi found me by the school gates. Her eyes sparkled brighter than ever beneath the afternoon sun.

"Ren! Are you ready for the trip?" she asked, voice bubbling with excitement.

"I'm… trying to be," I admitted.

She took my hand in hers, warm and reassuring. "Don't worry. It'll be fun. Just you and me, and the stars above."

Her smile was a balm for my anxious heart.

"I'm glad," I said, squeezing her hand gently.

That evening, back home, I prepared my things for the trip. A small bag with clothes and a few personal items — simple, unassuming, but charged with the weight of anticipation.

As I packed, I found myself stealing glances at the mirror.

The boy who stared back was soft and gentle — with eyes full of kindness and innocence beyond comprehension.

A boy ready to walk between worlds, carrying burdens no one else could see.

Just then, Astraea appeared in the doorway, arms folded but eyes full of quiet strength.

"You've been thinking about this trip a lot," she observed.

"I have," I admitted.

She stepped closer and rested her hand lightly on my shoulder. "Remember — you don't have to hide behind a mask with me. I know who you truly are."

I nodded, heart tightening. "Thank you, Astraea."

Her lips curved into a faint smile. "And remember, I'll always be your shield."

The next day arrived swiftly, and with it, the first steps toward the journey.

Standing by the front gate, I took one last deep breath.

A gentle knock sounded on the door.

Airi's mother greeted me with her warmest smile.

"Come in, Ren. We're ready for you."

The car ride was filled with soft conversation — Airi's laughter, her parents' careful questions, and the steady hum of the road beneath the wheels.

I held Airi's hand once again, feeling the quiet strength in her grasp.

Arriving at the lake house was like stepping into a dream.

The cottage sat nestled among tall pines, the lake shimmering like liquid glass beneath the clear blue sky.

Fireflies drifted in the cooling air, ready to light up the coming night.

Airi's eyes shone as she turned to me. "This is going to be amazing."

I smiled, a small warmth blooming in my chest.

"Yes," I said softly. "It will."

That night, lying beneath the blanket of stars, I felt a gentle hand slip into mine.

Airi's voice was a whisper, filled with promise. "Thank you for being here with me, Ren."

"I'm glad," I replied, heart beating steady in the quiet dark.

Astraea's words echoed softly in my mind: kindness is strength.

And in this moment, I was more certain than ever.
