Axel's POV,
The file hung in the air between us for a long moment, neither of us moving- Zane not pulling it back, and me not taking it.
I didn't even know what my problem was.
Not for a second did I truly believe I wanted to take it and confirm that Zane had actually done what he claimed.
How stupid would I have to be to just believe him because he said so? That was exactly what he always did. He knew how to sound convincing. He knew how to make me question myself until I didn't know which thoughts were mine anymore.
Even now, standing there with that look in his eyes and that calm voice, he seemed genuine.
But I shouldn't have wanted to believe him.
I shouldn't have had even the slightest urge to reconsider everything.
