Chapter 42 - Chapter 42: The Event Horizon

High above the harbor, the localized flash-bang pellets detonated in a blinding, magnesium-bright rupture. Sound and light tore through the atmosphere, obliterating Jose Porla's sight and rattling his inner ear.

Jose stumbled back, clutching his face in sheer fury, his dark aura flaring wildly. "Insolent insect!" he shrieked, his voice raw. "You think such petty tricks will work against me?! I am a Wizard Saint!"

Relying purely on spatial memory, Jose slammed both hands down.

"Shade Troopers!"

A massive, sickening surge of purple magic burst from his origin. From the dark sky and the shadows pooling around the battlements, hundreds—then thousands—of dark, faceless wraiths materialised. They filled the air like a swarming cloud of locusts, circling Jose in a dense, suffocating sphere before cascading down the balcony toward Kai.

Mid-sprint, Kai's golden eyes narrowed as he assessed the incoming wall of spectral matter. Spatial density too high to use a micro-burst Shadow Step without passing straight through an ethernano-draining entity.

Stopping meant getting surrounded. Retreating meant losing momentum.

"Shadow Monk Arts," Kai muttered, his breath coming out in a sharp, focused stream. "Vishnu's Embrace."

A complex, fast-spinning magic circle erupted in mid-air above Kai's head. With a crisp, tearing sound, the black cloth wrappings bound tightly around his forearms unfurled. Imbued with golden ethernano, the long, heavy strips of cloth whipped outward, catching the rotational torque of the magic circle.

WHIRRRRRRR!

Within a fraction of a second, the wrappings spun into a humming, impenetrable dome around Kai. Every Shade that surged forward slammed straight into the high-velocity, magic-laced cloth and was swatted out of existence, dissolving into harmless wisps of vapor. Kai pushed forward without losing a single beat of his stride, plowing a clean tunnel straight through the spectral horde.

Jose, his vision finally clearing from the blinding glare, blinked away tears of rage—only to see Kai breaking through the cloud of Shades, closing the distance at terrifying speed.

"Dark Divider!" Jose roared, sweeping his right arm across the air.

A crescent blade of compressed, deep-purple energy tore through the deck, traveling at a lethal velocity.

Too fast, Kai calculated instantaneously. Vertical jump leaves me exposed in mid-air.

Action followed thought. Kai flicked two lengths of his trailing arm wraps outward. They snapped across the deck like steel cables, wrapping tight around the bases of two structural support pillars behind Jose.

Dropping low onto his knees, Kai leaned his upper body back flat against the floor and slid across the wet steel deck using the wrappings to pull himself forward.

FZZZZZZT!

The purple crescent blade passed directly above him, missing his chest by less than a hair's margin and scorching the front of his coat. The second the blade cleared his body, Kai pulled hard on the anchored wraps, launching himself off the deck like a stone from a sling.

His feet hit the ground running. Kai thrust both arms forward, channeling dark ethernano into his trailing cloth. "Shadow Serpents."

The wrappings whipped toward Jose, mimicking the fluid, wrapping trajectory of Jose's own Shadow Entangle spell.

Jose froze for a split second, taking in the visual, before letting out a sharp scoff. "A cheap imitation!"

Jose thrust his palm forward, releasing a point-blank Dark Pulse. The dark explosion detonated against the incoming cloth, blasting the wrappings back in a cloud of smoke and ash.

"Where—" Jose's eyes widened.

"Here's an original," a flat, cold voice whispered right behind his left shoulder.

The smoke was a decoy; Kai had already executed a blind-side Shadow Step.

Kai brought his right hand back, his fingers locked together into a rigid, spear-like point.

Shadow Monk Arts: Piercing Strike!

His hand plunged forward like a piston. Jose's combat instincts flared just in time; he twisted his torso half an inch, flinging his magic origin into a violent, defensive surge.

THWACK!

Kai's hand pierced deep into the muscle of Jose's upper back, but the sudden density of Jose's concentrated magic stopped the strike before it could reach anything vital.

Jose gritted his teeth through the pain and lashed out behind him with a backward sweep. "DARK PULSE!"

Kai didn't attempt to pull his hand back. Recognizing the wind-up motion, he slapped his left palm violently against the elbow of Jose's casting arm, forcefully altering the vector of the spell.

BOOOOOOOOOOM!

The compressed blast of dark magic veered off course, soaring over Kai's shoulder and slamming directly into the upper support structure of the guild's eastern spire. The entire stone and iron tower crumbled, detonating outward in a cascade of pulverized masonry and twisting steel as it plummeted toward the main deck below.

Down on the lower deck, the chaotic brawl came to a sudden halt as a massive shadow fell over the fighters.

Natsu, Gray, Erza, Elfman, and the recovering Element Four looked up simultaneously.

"What the hell?!" Natsu yelled, shoving Gajeel back as a three-ton block of stone smashed into the deck twenty feet away.

"Get back!" Erza shouted, grabbing Gray by the collar and leaping clear as a tangle of twisted iron beams rained down, crushing the space where they had been standing seconds before.

"Are they trying to bring the whole fortress down?!" Gray cursed, shielding his face from the shower of sparks and debris.

Gajeel spat a mouthful of bloody gravel, glaring up at the falling tower. "The hell is going on up there?!"

High above on the central platform, Jose stared at his redirected blast in momentary shock. His face twisted into a mask of pure, unbridled fury.

"You insolent—!" Jose swung a wild, heavy backhand toward Kai's head.

Kai ducked beneath the swinging arm, stepped straight into Jose's guard, and slammed his heavy combat boot down onto Jose's left foot, stomping his toe with brutal, mechanical weight.

Jose gasped, his body freezing instinctively from the sudden, sharp pain. Before he could recover his balance, Kai's hands became a blinding blur.

CLACK!

A rising right uppercut slammed into the underside of Jose's chin, snapping his head back and rattling his jaw. Kai immediately followed up, driving two rigid fingers straight toward Jose's eyes to permanently blind his sight.

"GET OFF ME!" Jose shrieked.

A massive, uncontrolled burst of pure, dark ethernano erupted outward from Jose's entire body. The raw physical shockwave, laced with floating Shades, slammed into Kai at point-blank range.

The impact lifted Kai off his feet, blasting him backward through the air. The momentary touch of the Shades instantly drained a critical portion of his ethernano, preventing him from casting Feather Fall or gaining a clean footing.

Kai plummeted toward the edge of the platform, the open drop to the harbor yawning below him.

THWIP!

At the last possible second, Kai's unfurled arm wraps shot outward, coiling tightly around an iron support column. Using his forward momentum, Kai swung himself in a sharp arc, vaulting back onto the deck and landing on one knee fifty feet away from the Master of Phantom Lord.

Both men rose slowly, breathing heavily.

Kai stood in a low, balanced stance, looking significantly worse for wear. His black coat had been completely shredded by the blasts, leaving him in only a torn, sleeveless black turtleneck. The cloth wrappings covering his forearms down to his hands remained intact, but his arms were trembling slightly from the strain of force redirection. Scorch marks covered his face, and a fresh trail of blood trickled from the corner of his mouth.

Fifty feet away, Jose stood with a hand pressed against his bleeding chin, his other hand reaching back to feel the puncture wound near his spine. He pulled his fingers away, staring at the bright red blood staining his skin.

"You..." Jose whispered, his voice trembling before breaking into a ragged scream. "You actually made me bleed?!"

Kai winced slightly, adjusting the fit of his remaining sleeve with a dry, bloody smirk. "Hey... don't say it without context. Someone might think I made you bleed the wrong way."

Jose's eyes widened.

Then, a terrifying, absolute silence settled over the platform.

The rage evaporated from Jose's face, replaced by a cold, vacant expression. His eyes turned entirely pitch black, the whites consumed by dark magic. The temperature on the deck plummeted, and a suffocating aura of pure dread washed outward from his body, blanketing the entire harbor and stretching across the streets of Magnolia.

Every single living soul in the vicinity froze in their tracks.

"I tried to spare your life out of respect for council politics," Jose said, his voice flat, distorted, and echoing as if coming from the bottom of a deep well. "No more. You will die... alongside your wretched guild."

Jose raised both hands to the sky.

"Shade Magic Ultimate Art..."

A massive, dark purple magic circle—stretching nearly fifty yards in diameter—materialized beneath their feet, covering the entirety of the upper platform with glowing, ancient runes.

"...Call of the Abyss."

Kai's instincts screamed a warning.

Without hesitation, the runes along his ankles flared, and he vanished in a burst of Shadow Step. He reappeared thirty yards away on the narrow ledge of a neighboring control tower, boots scraping against the wet stone as he steadied himself.

"Well..." Kai glanced back at the enormous magic circle. "Seems he didn't appreciate my effort to lighten the mood."

The smirk faded slightly.

His golden eyes traced the layers of the array, following the impossible density of compressed ethernano.

This isn't just an attack... it's a massive system of multiple spells.

Kai's eyes widened with genuine fascination.

"So this is the true capability of a Wizard Saint..."

Down below, inside the fortress's lower levels, Mirajane was securing Lucy inside a hidden storage room when the wall shuddered. Both girls froze, their breath hitching as a paralyzing chill swept over them.

"W-What is that...?" Lucy whispered, her hands shaking uncontrollably as she clutched her keys. "The air... it feels heavy..."

Mirajane looked up toward the ceiling, her face pale. "Master Jose... he's dropped all restraint."

On the main battle deck, Erza, Natsu, Gray, and Elfman stood frozen, their spines tingling as the sky above them turned from rain-gray to a bruised, unnatural purple.

"What's happening...?" Gray muttered, his hands trembling as he tried to form an ice mold. "The magic in the air... it's smothering us..."

"Kai..." Erza whispered, her crimson eyes locked on the glowing tower above.

Before they could take a step toward the stairs, Aria, Totomaru, Gajeel, and Sol closed in around them, their expressions cold and triumphant.

"Focus on yourselves!" Totomaru barked, his blade trailing blue fire. "Your friend is already dead! You are looking upon the true power of our Guild Master!"

"Sadness..." Aria wept softly, expanding his hands. "None shall survive the abyss."

High above on the central platform, Jose stood at the center of the massive purple circle. His face looked completely drained, hollowed out by the immense toll of casting an ultimate spell, but a cruel, victorious smile stretched across his lips.

He looked up at Kai perched on the distant tower ledge.

"Die now," Jose whispered.

RUMBLE...

The world seemed to pause.

From the center of the massive purple magic circle, a gigantic, pale, clawed hand—composed of dense, compressed shadow and rotting ethernano—emerged, gripping the edge of the array.

A horrific, deafening roar echoed out from the depths of the circle, a sound so utterly repulsive and powerful that it vibrated through the steel deck, through the cobblestones of Magnolia, and deep into the bones of every mage present.

For one terrifying second, the entire battle stopped. Fairy Tail and Phantom Lord alike froze in complete, absolute horror as the entity in the abyss began to pull itself into the physical world.
