Chapter 43 - Chapter 43: Trust and Tragedy

The heavy, metallic rain over Magnolia had ceased, replaced by a suffocating, unnatural stillness. The dark purple ethernano flowing from Jose Porla's magic array bled into the atmosphere, thick as tar. The sheer density of the rotting magic was so disturbing that the entire battlefield ground to a halt.

Down in the streets, the injured members of Fairy Tail, along with Lucy and Mirajane, cautiously stepped out of the guild hall's ruins, their faces pale as they stared in absolute horror at the sky. The air felt poisonous.

Miles away in the tranquil forest, Porlyusica stood over the bandaged, unconscious form of Makarov Dreyar. She paused, her hands hovering over his chest as the ambient magic in the room suddenly violently shifted. She turned her head toward the window, her stern eyes widening at the bruised, purple sky. When she looked back down, Makarov's fingers twitched. A low, guttural groan escaped his lips, and his eyes snapped open, glowing with a fierce, golden light.

Back on the upper platform of the walking fortress, the Call of the Abyss reached its terrifying climax.

The single, pale hand gripping the edge of the magic circle was joined by another, and then two more. With a horrific, tearing sound, a monstrous, demonic creature pulled itself from the void. It was completely pitch black, towering twenty feet high, possessing four heavily muscled arms and a face twisted into a nightmarish, jawless scream. Wisps of rotting ethernano curled off its skin like smoke.

But the summoning didn't stop there.

The magic circle pulsed again. A massive, obsidian snake slithered out, its thick body followed by a second head, then a third, revealing a monstrous, multi-headed hydra. Behind it, a pair of giant Orcs lumbered onto the deck, wielding crude iron clubs the size of tree trunks. Then came a towering black skeleton grasping a massive broadsword, followed by a swarm of smaller skeletons, lesser orcs, and venomous serpents.

Their combined aura made the harbor feel like the depths of the underworld.

Jose Porla, looking completely drained, his face pale and his breathing ragged, pointed a shaking finger at Kai. His eyes burned with pure, unadulterated hatred.

"Now," Jose wheezed, his voice laced with venom. "Die."

The horde surged.

The four-armed demon was the first to reach him. For a creature its size, its explosive speed was unnatural. It lunged across the platform, driving a massive fist toward the tower ledge where Kai was perched.

Kai didn't hesitate. He vaulted straight over the incoming fist, his boots making contact with the creature's thick forearm, and sprinted upward. The demon roared, sweeping its other three hands down to swat him like a fly. Anticipating the trap, Kai activated Shadow Step, dissolving into a dark blur and reappearing perfectly balanced on the demon's broad shoulders.

Before he could strike, a heavy hiss filled the air. The multi-headed snake had already closed the distance, its jaws unhinging as it lunged for Kai's torso.

Kai immediately sprang backward, launching himself off the demon's shoulder. The snake, unable to alter its trajectory in time, sank its massive fangs directly into the demon's neck.

Kai landed gracefully on the lower deck, but his feet had barely touched the steel when he was instantly swarmed by the smaller mobs. Undead hands grabbed at his coat, while lesser orcs swung rusty blades.

"Fuck off." Kai cursed. He delivered a brutal, spinning roundhouse kick, launching two orcs back into the crowd. With a flick of his wrist, he dropped a highly compressed, explosive lacrima crystal at his own feet and immediately backflipped away.

BOOM!

The explosion tore through the lower ranks, incinerating the smaller creatures in a flash of heat and concussive force. But before Kai could even register the victory, a massive shadow eclipsed him. The giant black skeleton was already mid-swing, bringing its colossal broadsword down with the force of a falling guillotine.

Kai cursed, dropping into a low, frantic cartwheel that barely cleared the blade's edge. As the sword slammed into the deck, sending shockwaves through the steel, Kai threw his unwound arm wrappings forward. The magic-laced cloth lashed tightly around the skeleton's bony wrist. Using the creature's own downward momentum, Kai yanked backward with everything he had, forcing the skeleton to face-plant violently into the floor.

He turned to his left just in time to see the two giant Orcs bringing their clubs down on his position. Kai engaged Shadow Step, slipping into the void as the clubs pulverized the spot he had just occupied.

He materialized twenty feet away, but the demon had already tracked his magical signature. It rushed him, all four fists raised. Kai prepared to pivot and intercept, planting his right foot to generate torque.

Suddenly, his footing vanished.

Jose had slammed his hand against the deck, opening a localized spatial sinkhole right beneath Kai's boots. Kai stumbled, his balance completely compromised. In that fatal fraction of a second, the demon closed the gap. A massive, rotting foot slammed into Kai's midsection.

The impact launched him through the air like a cannonball. He slammed back-first into a reinforced steel wall, the metal buckling around his frame. Kai collapsed to his hands and knees, violently coughing up a splatter of blood.

Before his brain could even process the blunt force trauma, a terrifying hiss echoed to his right. The multi-headed snake lunged.

Kai forced his battered body upward, leaping desperately to dodge the first two snapping heads. But while he was airborne, the remaining two heads snapped their jaws toward him. Kai channeled ethernano to his legs to Shadow Step away, but he was a fraction too slow. The heavy, armored snouts of the serpents crashed into him just as his body began to shift into shadow.

The disruption in the spatial transfer triggered a violent backfire. Kai was blasted out of the void, tumbling harshly across the jagged, broken deck. He rolled to a stop, coughing up more blood, his vision swimming.

Above him, the giant skeleton loomed once more, raising its sword for a killing blow.

Kai rolled to the side, his coat tearing on the debris as the blade cleaved the deck beside him. He pushed himself up, wiping the blood from his chin, his golden eyes narrowing into dangerous slits.

"Alright," Kai breathed, his voice eerily calm. "Now you have pissed me off."

Before Kai could move, a new magical presence entered the battlefield.

It didn't feel like the suffocating, rotting dread of Jose's magic. It was a dense, suffocatingly bright pressure, heavy with golden holy light. It washed over the harbor like a tidal wave, suppressing the purple ethernano and freezing every single person in their tracks.

A tiny figure stood at the edge of the ruined docks, bursting with an overwhelming, titanic power.

Master Makarov had arrived.

His expression was one of pure, unadulterated rage. The air around him shimmered with heat as he looked up at the platform.

"JOSE!" Makarov's voice boomed, rattling the very foundations of the walking fortress.

The entire battlefield fell completely silent. Even the mindless creatures born from the abyss halted their attacks, their instincts paralyzing them in the face of a superior predator.

Jose flinched, his bravado wavering for a moment before a sick, arrogant smirk spread across his exhausted face. "Makarov... finally back from your nap?"

Makarov didn't answer him. The old man's furious gaze swept over the battlefield, passing over the battered, exhausted forms of Erza, Natsu, Gray, and Elfman, before landing on the upper deck. He saw Kai standing there, completely bloodied, his chest heaving, leaning heavily on one leg.

Makarov's jaw tightened. "I will end you."

Jose merely chuckled, raising a hand to command his beasts. But before Makarov could take a step forward to intervene, a sharp voice cut through the tension.

"Old man. Stay out of this."

Everyone froze. Natsu and Gray stared up in disbelief. The Phantom Lord elites exchanged confused glances. Jose blinked, taken aback. Makarov stopped in his tracks, staring up at the young researcher.

"Kai..." Makarov said, his voice dropping, his fists trembling with suppressed anxiety. "This isn't the time to be stubborn. Look at yourself! You could die!"

Kai stood up straighter, wincing as his ribs protested. He offered a blood-stained, defiant smirk. "Is that all the trust you have in me, old man?"

Makarov froze.

"Trust your children, old man," Kai shouted back, his voice steady and resolute, echoing across the silent harbor. "Just wait and watch."

For a moment, the bloodied, battered young man standing before Makarov shifted in the old guild master's eyes. He saw the much smaller, younger Kai—the quiet, analytical boy he had taken in years ago, staring up at him with that same unwavering, stubborn intellect.

Makarov swallowed hard. He let out a low, rumbling growl, squeezing his eyes shut for a brief second. When he opened them, the blinding aura around him dimmed slightly. He took a deliberate step back.

"Fine."

Kai's smirk widened into something lethal. He turned his attention back to Jose. "Let's finish this clown."

Jose's face twisted in rage. "Kill him! ALL OF YOU!"

The giant skeleton clicked its jaw and swung its sword in a massive horizontal arc. Kai didn't dodge. He leaped directly onto the flat of the moving blade, ran up its length, and slammed his heavy combat boot down near the hilt with a concentrated burst of magic.

CRACK!

The massive iron blade snapped in half. Kai bounded off the fractured weapon just as the snake lunged at his back. Missing Kai entirely, the serpent impaled its own throat on the jagged, broken edge of the skeleton's sword.

Mid-air, Kai saw the four-armed demon leaping toward him, its jaws wide open.

"You die first," Kai muttered.

Reaching into his spatial pouch, he pulled out a collapsible steel spear. As the demon reached out to grab him, Kai twisted his torso violently to the side, narrowly avoiding the massive hands. He plunged the spear directly into the demon's outstretched arm. Using his falling momentum, Kai dragged the blade down, completely tearing the muscle and spectral bone from wrist to shoulder.

Reaching the creature's neck, Kai jammed the spear straight into the demon's skull. He flipped his body upward, slamming his open palm against the butt of the spear.

Shadow Monk Arts: Echo Strike!

The initial physical impact plunged the spear deeper into the skull. A second later, the kinetic "echo" released from the tip, detonating inside the demon's head. The skull shattered into black dust, and the headless body plummeted to the deck.

Kai landed cleanly, but Jose's army was already rushing him.

The remaining heads of the giant snake snapped forward. Kai twisted beneath the first set of fangs, sprang upward, and landed squarely on top of the serpent's snout. He slammed his heel down, crushing the skull into the steel plating. Without breaking momentum, he Shadow Stepped, reappearing above the next head—stomping its snout. Then the next, and the next. In three seconds, the hydra was a twitching, headless mess.

Kai vanished again, reappearing in front of the giant skeleton. He flipped elegantly over its panicked, defensive swing, sprinting straight up its sword. He whipped his cloth wrappings forward, binding the creature's wrists tightly together. Leaping toward its skull, Kai pulled the wrappings upward with brutal force, forcing the skeleton's own trapped hands and sword to slam upward, crushing its own skull into dust. The massive, headless frame collapsed, instantly crushing the smaller skeletons swarming beneath it.

Landing amidst the bones, Kai didn't stop.

Body Strengthening.

His muscles bulged, the dark veins on his arms glowing brightly. Grabbing the ends of his wrappings—which were still tangled in the skeleton's ribs—Kai spun on his heel. Using immense centrifugal force, he swung the entire massive ribcage in a circle before hurling it like a boulder straight at Jose.

"Protect me!" Jose shrieked, cowering backward.

The two giant Orcs leaped in front of their master, taking the full brunt of the skeletal projectile. Both were instantly pulverized, their bodies turning to ash upon impact.

Through the cloud of bone dust, Kai sprinted straight for Jose. "Now your turn!"

Jose froze for a fraction of a second, his eyes wide. But as Kai closed the final ten feet, the terror vanished from Jose's face, replaced by a dark, cunning smirk.

"Foolish brat."

Jose slammed both hands down onto the deck. The shadows pooling between Kai's boots erupted.

A single, severed head of the giant snake—kept alive purely by Jose's concentrated magic—lunged upward, sinking its massive fangs deep into Kai's left foot.

Kai cursed, immediately bringing his right boot down, stomping the snake head into oblivion. But the damage was done. The sheer force of the bite, combined with the size of the snake resulted in a sickening SNAP. His left leg fractured at the ankle.

Pain flared, blinding him for a crucial millisecond.

Before Kai could even process the fracture, the shadows behind him warped. Two surviving smaller Orcs materialized from the void, swinging their iron clubs simultaneously.

CRUNCH!

Both clubs slammed squarely into Kai's spine.

The blunt force trauma was catastrophic. Kai was violently thrown off the platform, his body launched over the edge into the open air, his spine screaming in agony.

As he fell helplessly, completely unable to right himself, a massive skeletal hand erupted from the shadows lining the fortress wall. It snatched Kai out of the air, its bony fingers wrapping directly around his broken left foot. The hand squeezed, crushing the fractured bone even further. Kai gasped, the pain stealing his breath.

The skeletal hand swung downward, slamming Kai face-first into the unforgiving steel hull of the fortress.

His vision went entirely white. A massive concussion rattled his brain, effectively shutting down his motor functions.

The hand didn't stop. It whipped upward, hurling his limp, broken body high into the air.

From the shadows on the lower deck, the headless body of the four-armed demon materialized, driven by Jose's sheer, hateful willpower. It coiled its legs, leaped into the sky, and brought its remaining fist squarely into Kai's airborne, defenseless form.

BOOM!

The impact sounded like a thunderclap. Kai was launched even higher into the bruised sky, his body totally limp.

Silence descended upon the battlefield.

Down by the docks, Makarov stood completely frozen. His golden aura flickered and died, his eyes wide with a terror he hadn't felt in decades.

"KAI!"

Lucy and Mirajane collapsed to their knees, covering their faces as they screamed his name.

Cana's hands began to shake violently, her tarot cards slipping from her fingers and scattering across the wet cobblestones.

Natsu, Gray, Erza, and Elfman stared up at the sky, their bodies trembling, completely paralyzed by the sheer brutality of what they had just witnessed.

But the battlefield offered no mercy.

Seeing the Fairy Tail mages broken in spirit, Gajeel, Totomaru, Aria, and Sol surged forward with renewed, sadistic energy, shouting war cries as they launched fresh attacks against the traumatized guild members.

High above it all, Jose Porla stood on his ruined balcony, throwing his head back and laughing maniacally. The sound echoed over the harbor, chilling and triumphant.

He slowly looked down at the frozen, wide-eyed form of Makarov Dreyar.

"Your architect is dead!" Jose gloated, spreading his arms wide as he relished the despair. "Come now, Makarov! What will you do now?!"

Makarov didn't speak. He just stood there, his eyes fixed on the sky. Slowly, agonizingly, his trembling hands curled into tight, white-knuckled fists.
