The coalition continued moving for another stretch after the southern junction fell behind them, but Haotian no longer regarded the clockwise sweep as the only useful direction. Through the Dao of the Universe, he could sense large portions of the stronghold still occupied by demons, yet those forces no longer behaved like one connected army. Some had withdrawn into local sectors, others were still taking longer routes around the path of the coalition's battle march, and several concentrations remained separated from the commanders or supplies that had once supported them. The interior had not been emptied, but the structure that had allowed those forces to respond together had already been damaged far beyond what Haotian needed for the first assault.
He continued forward while examining the movement farther ahead and behind. The demons nearest the coalition remained cautious, rarely committing entire companies unless the route forced them into direct contact, while formations farther away were choosing safer roads around the army rather than trying to cross through it. Those decisions preserved more of their remaining strength, but they also confirmed that the coalition no longer needed to continue cutting deeper through every district simply to prevent another large concentration from forming. The surviving demons were already spending too much time reaching one another.
Xuanyin had reached the same conclusion through the reports accumulating at command. The map still showed large enemy groups across the stronghold, and several sectors contained enough cultivators to inflict serious losses if the coalition entered them directly. The difference lay in the distances and damaged connections between those sectors. A force in one district could no longer assume that troops, supplies, or orders from another would reach it in time to influence the same battle.
A communication officer updated several markers from the latest Umbrel reports. "The western groups have stopped trying to reconnect. They're consolidating where they are."
Another officer pointed toward the eastern sectors. "Same here. Local commanders are keeping the troops they can reach and abandoning the longer reinforcement routes."
Xuanyin studied the positions for a moment. "How much of the interior strength is gone?"
The officers compared the reports rather than answering immediately. Exact counts were impossible while the battle was still moving, but the accumulated information from scouts, wounded transfers, destroyed formations, and enemy withdrawals gave them enough to establish a useful estimate. Large sections of the eastern concentration had been destroyed during the relocation battle, several companies had been broken in earlier engagements, and the fighting around the Demon Generals had consumed still more.
"Close to half," one officer finally answered. "Possibly more in some districts. Less in others."
Xuanyin looked toward the coalition's current position. That was enough.
The first assault had never required exterminating every demon inside the stronghold. Haotian had entered to turn the enemy's own interior against them, release the coalition where they were least prepared to receive it, and destroy enough of the internal military structure that the base could no longer respond normally. Continuing the same clockwise movement now would kill more demons, but it would also force the coalition to spend more cultivation and accumulate more injuries fighting isolated sectors that no longer supported one another.
She contacted Haotian.
He was moving near the front when the communication reached him, with Lianhua and Yinxue several paces away and the rest of the family distributed through the arrowhead. Tianlan remained closer to the outer portion of the formation, while the two Frost Rainbow Falcons circled above without diving toward the scattered enemies visible through the side roads. The mixed formations behind them continued following the curve established in the previous advance.
"Current estimate puts the interior losses near half," Xuanyin said.
Haotian looked toward the deeper sections of the stronghold rather than slowing. "And the surviving sectors?"
"Still armed. Still organized locally. They're not moving together anymore."
"That's enough."
Xuanyin paused briefly. "We can keep the sweep going."
"We don't need to."
Haotian shifted his perception farther toward the front of the stronghold. The main gates and the defensive districts surrounding them lay several sectors away, still occupied by troops whose formations had been built around attacks from outside rather than enemies emerging from the interior. Their strongest arrays remained positioned toward the exterior approaches, and many of the soldiers closest to the front had spent the assault guarding against a coalition that had never appeared in front of them.
Xuanyin understood where his attention had moved. "The gates?"
"From behind."
The decision required no further explanation between them.
Haotian stopped extending the route farther along the clockwise curve and began examining the most direct usable path toward the front of the base. Several roads were blocked by destroyed structures or demonic concentrations that would require unnecessary fighting, but another series of internal military roads led south and gradually bent toward the front defensive district. The path was not completely open, though it would allow the coalition to reach the rear of the front lines without passing through the largest surviving interior sectors.
He sent the new direction through the arrowhead.
The change did not happen all at once. Haotian and the leading formations began turning first, leaving the previous clockwise route and moving toward the roads that would carry them closer to the front. The mixed legions behind them followed in sequence as the change traveled through the depth of the army. Rather than breaking the formation and sending units directly toward the new objective, the coalition maintained the same overall structure that had carried it through the stronghold.
Lianhua noticed the change as the road ahead shifted away from the established curve. "We're finished with the sweep?"
"For now."
She looked toward the cultivation gathered farther along the original route. Several demonic sectors remained there, some still large enough that they could have provided another substantial battle. "We're leaving them?"
"They're not stopping us."
Lianhua nodded and returned her sword to a lower guard while the formation continued turning. She did not suggest clearing the sectors simply because they were nearby. The coalition had already spent too much strength during the interior fighting for additional victories without purpose to be worth the cost.
Behind them, Xuanyin sent the same instruction through the command structure. "New direction of advance. Front defensive district."
One officer looked toward the current map. "We're leaving the remaining sectors intact?"
"Yes."
Another officer asked, "Do we maintain scouts on them?"
"Of course. But nobody turns away from the battle march to attack them unless they approach us first."
The orders moved quickly through the mixed legions. Blue Sphere formations that had been holding the outer edge of the previous sweep shortened their positions and folded back toward the new direction. Marephoros cultivators adjusted around them, keeping the nearby side roads controlled long enough for the deeper formations to complete the turn. Umbrel scouts shifted their observation routes so they could continue tracking the surviving demon sectors without remaining so far behind that they became separated from the army.
The specialists made the same adjustment. Pyrelith cultivators stopped investigating formation systems that no longer threatened the coalition's new route, while Veridian teams abandoned underground branches leading away from the front defensive district. Celestara observers moved across the elevated structures ahead and began identifying which roads offered the clearest approach toward the gates. The coalition did not waste time destroying systems merely because they were within reach.
The change in direction also altered how the demons interpreted the movement.
Several local commanders monitoring the coalition had expected the clockwise sweep to continue through the southern districts. Their troops had already begun preparing defensive positions farther along that route, while scouts watched the most likely intersections for signs of Haotian's approach. When the coalition turned away from those roads, the first reports were treated as another local maneuver rather than a complete change of objective.
One demonic commander received a scout near a partially fortified intersection. "They've turned south."
"How many formations?"
"The front and the groups behind it."
"All of them?"
"I could not see the rear."
The commander looked toward the road his soldiers had spent the previous half hour preparing. "Are they moving toward another sector?"
"Possibly."
The uncertainty kept him from abandoning the position immediately. The coalition had already changed direction once during the eastern concentration's relocation, and no commander wanted to move an entire company only to discover that Haotian had shifted back toward the original route. He sent additional scouts instead.
The delay gave the coalition more distance.
Farther along the new path, another demonic formation noticed the movement and began preparing for contact. Its commander saw only part of the arrowhead through the cultivation fluctuations beyond several military blocks and assumed Haotian intended to strike a southern interior sector. He ordered the nearest defenders to reinforce a broad junction ahead of the coalition rather than informing the front-line command that the entire army might be approaching the gates.
The fragmented structure of the stronghold made that mistake understandable. No single commander still possessed a complete view of Haotian's battle march, and messages traveling between sectors took too long to verify every change before the coalition moved again. Each officer therefore responded according to what could be observed from his own position.
Haotian encountered the first local defense after the turn and did not stop to dismantle it completely. The demons had gathered enough cultivators to block one of the direct roads toward the front, but the position had been assembled quickly and lacked the layered formations that would have made a frontal engagement worthwhile. He examined the surrounding streets through the Dao of the Universe and found a parallel road passing through a damaged barracks district only a short distance west.
"Shift left."
The Blue Sphere formations near the front changed direction with him rather than striking the demonic line directly. The defenders reacted by moving to follow, but Marephoros pressure along the intersection slowed their lateral movement while Umbrel scouts attacked the communication cultivators trying to relay the new direction. The coalition passed the edge of the defensive position before the demons could relocate enough strength to block the second road.
The demonic commander watched the main body move away from the position he had prepared. Pursuing would require abandoning the barriers and entering open streets against a coalition formation much deeper than his own. He ordered his troops to hold rather than chase. The decision preserved the company but removed it from the battle Haotian was actually choosing to fight.
The coalition continued toward the front.
Tianlan moved along the outer edge of the new direction and watched the two Frost Rainbow Falcons circle above the buildings. The change in route required the birds to adjust their observation pattern, but neither had to attack during the bypass. Their earlier fatigue had not disappeared, and Tianlan allowed them to remain high enough that they could conserve strength while still watching the approaches on his side of the formation.
Haotian noticed the lack of pursuit and did not alter his speed. The coalition had spent the earlier fighting proving what happened when demonic formations attempted to gather directly in front of the arrowhead. Local commanders were now choosing survival when they lacked enough strength to make the engagement useful. That made the new movement faster than the initial interior assault without requiring the demons to become incompetent.
Several roads later, the shape of the stronghold began changing again. The military compounds became more heavily reinforced, and formations embedded in the streets carried clearer relationships toward the walls and outer defenses. Supply stations appeared more frequently, along with barracks large enough to house troops assigned to the main gate sectors. The coalition was approaching the part of the base originally designed to support the exterior battlefront.
Haotian extended the Dao of the Universe farther ahead.
The difference in defensive orientation became immediately apparent.
Large formation channels ran toward the walls and gates rather than inward through the stronghold. Several killing arrays were embedded in towers whose openings faced outside, and reinforced barriers overlapped along the approaches an attacking army would normally use from beyond the base. Gate-control structures sat behind those defenses but had been built under the assumption that the protected side would be the interior.
The coalition was approaching that protected side.
Haotian continued studying the arrangement as he walked. Fixed defenses could not simply be turned around because the enemy appeared behind them. Some arrays might be reconfigured, and many of the troops could physically reverse their formations once warnings reached them, but every adjustment would require time. The farther the coalition advanced before the front-line commanders understood the new objective, the less time they would have.
Yinxue moved closer after sensing the growing density of formations ahead. "Those are the front defenses."
"Yes."
"They're still facing outward."
"For now."
The words carried no expectation that the demons would remain unaware until the coalition reached the gates. Haotian knew the front commanders would eventually understand what was happening. The advantage lay in reaching them while they were still changing from one defensive orientation to another.
Xuanyin began receiving the same information through Celestara scouts. The observers had moved far enough ahead and above the coalition to see several sections of the front defensive district from the interior side. Companies stationed there were beginning to turn, but the changes remained inconsistent because some commanders still expected the reports to describe another interior movement rather than a direct attack against the gate lines.
One scout reported that a large front-line company had begun moving away from the walls.
Another reported that a nearby formation had not moved at all.
A third saw defensive cultivators attempting to reverse the flow through an array whose primary channels were fixed toward the exterior.
Xuanyin compared the reports. "They're starting to understand."
A command officer asked, "Do we increase speed?"
"No. Keep the formations together."
"If they finish turning before we arrive—"
"Then we fight them together."
The coalition did not abandon discipline merely because surprise was beginning to fade. Accelerating the arrowhead too far ahead of the deeper legions would recreate the same separation Haotian had repeatedly exploited against the demons. The army maintained the pace at which its strongest formations, reserves, and support could remain connected.
The front-line commanders finally received enough reports to recognize that Haotian's movement was not another local sweep.
One senior demon stood within a command post behind the main defensive line while messengers arrived from different interior sectors. The first placed the coalition moving south. The second reported Haotian bypassing a defensive position rather than engaging it. The third confirmed that the leading formations were now using roads that converged toward the rear of the gate district.
The commander turned toward the wall-side map. "They're coming here."
An officer looked toward the outward-facing defensive lines. "From inside?"
"Yes."
Orders began moving immediately.
Companies stationed closest to the walls were told to reverse their formations where possible. Mobile reserves shifted away from exterior support positions and began moving inward through the gate district. Formation masters were ordered to determine which defensive arrays could be redirected toward the stronghold interior and which should simply be abandoned. Gate guards reinforced the control structures and the physical mechanisms supporting the seals.
The defenders reacted correctly once they understood the threat.
They simply had less time than they wanted.
Haotian felt the movement ahead become more organized as front-line troops finally began turning toward him. Stronger cultivators were gathering around the gate structures, and several mobile formations changed orientation enough to create the beginnings of an inward-facing defense. The fixed arrays along the walls remained mostly directed outside, while those with adjustable channels began struggling through reconfiguration.
Lianhua looked toward the changing cultivation ahead. "They know now."
Haotian nodded.
The arrowhead did not slow.
Behind them, the last formations completed the change away from the clockwise sweep and entered the new direction of advance. The coalition's battle march now stretched from the damaged southern districts toward the front of the stronghold, leaving the surviving interior sectors on either side rather than continuing to circle through them. Scouts remained watching those forces, but no legion turned away from the main body to finish enemies who were no longer blocking the objective.
Ahead, the front defensive district continued reorganizing.
The coalition kept marching toward its rear.
The first structures belonging entirely to the front defensive district appeared several streets later. They were heavier than the barracks and supply compounds the coalition had passed during the approach, with reinforced walls, interconnected formation platforms, elevated firing positions, and broad roads designed to move troops rapidly toward the main gates. Even from the interior side, it was obvious that every part of the district had been arranged around one assumption: the enemy would come from outside the stronghold. The coalition was now advancing through the side those defenses had been built to protect.
Haotian slowed only enough to study the arrangement more carefully through the Dao of the Universe. The largest formation channels ran toward the walls, feeding layers of defensive arrays positioned to strike armies approaching from beyond the gates. Secondary channels supplied towers, barriers, and reinforced platforms placed along the exterior-facing line, while the interior connections were thinner and intended primarily for command movement, logistics, and reinforcement. Nothing about the district suggested that its designers had expected a hostile army of this size to emerge from deep inside the base.
That did not make the defenses useless. Mobile troops were already reversing their orientation, formation masters were attempting to alter the flow of several adjustable arrays, and commanders farther ahead had begun consolidating around structures that could still function against an attack from within. The advantage Haotian had created was not that the enemy possessed no means of resistance, but that nearly every useful response required an additional step before it could be brought against him.
The coalition kept moving while those steps were still being taken.
A broad intersection ahead had been converted into the first meaningful interior-facing defensive point. Several demon companies were forming across it, their ranks still uneven from having turned away from the wall-side positions they had occupied moments earlier. Defensive cultivators were setting barriers across the road while formation masters worked behind them, drawing energy away from an outward-facing array and redirecting part of its flow toward the intersection. Stronger officers moved along the forming line, forcing units into coherent positions before the coalition could arrive.
Haotian examined the array for less than a second before continuing forward.
The formation was being reversed too quickly.
Its primary channels had been designed to carry energy toward the walls, and the demons were now forcing power backward through connections that had never been intended to sustain the same pressure in that direction. The array could still function, but the reversed circulation created several areas where the flow accumulated unevenly before reaching the new defensive face. The demons had recognized the problem as well and were reinforcing those points with additional cultivators, but doing so tied more of their manpower to maintaining the formation.
Haotian raised one hand and indicated the left side of the intersection.
Lianhua saw the direction and immediately understood what he had found. She shifted with him while Yinxue and Yueru moved to the opposite side of the leading formation, creating enough separation that the defenders could not concentrate their strongest cultivators against a single point. Behind them, the first mixed legion shortened its front as it entered the narrower approach, allowing the deeper formations to continue moving without spilling into the side roads.
The demons did not wait for the coalition to reach the barrier.
The newly reversed array released first.
Dark energy surged inward from formation plates embedded along the intersection, spreading across the road in several overlapping bands. The attack lacked the clean convergence it would have possessed in its intended direction, but the power itself remained substantial enough to tear through ordinary cultivators caught without protection. Blue Sphere defenders near the front raised their weapons and defensive arts while the stronger cultivators around Haotian intercepted the sections that would have struck directly into the arrowhead.
The first impact pushed against the coalition's front without stopping it.
Haotian stepped into the pressure rather than withdrawing from it. The reversed formation flow remained visible to his perception, every imbalance becoming clearer as the array strained under continued output. He shifted several steps left through Cloud-Sundering Steps without announcing the movement, crossed the edge of the strongest energy band, and entered the region where two redirected channels were being forced to overlap.
His fist struck the reinforced formation surface covering the nearest anchor.
The impact did not destroy the entire array. It cracked the protective layer around one of the points already carrying more energy than it should have, and the imbalance immediately spread into the redirected channels connected to it. The demons reinforcing those lines reacted quickly, reducing the flow before the overload could propagate farther, but that required them to weaken the attack pressing against the coalition.
Lianhua moved as soon as the pressure changed.
Her sword passed through the damaged formation layer under the principles of the Voidpierce Sword Sutra, penetrating the reinforced surface rather than competing directly with its full defensive strength. The strike reached the structural relationship beneath it and severed one of the channels supporting the reversed flow. Energy that had been redirected toward the intersection lost part of its path and surged back through the remaining connections.
The defenders adjusted before the formation could collapse entirely.
An officer shouted for the left side to abandon the array and reinforce the physical line instead. Cultivators maintaining the damaged section withdrew from the anchors and moved forward, joining the companies already waiting behind the barrier. Formation masters farther back isolated the broken channel before the instability spread into the larger network.
The decision preserved most of the array.
It also opened the left side of the intersection.
Haotian drove directly into it.
The first demon cultivator met him with a heavy blade raised across the body rather than wasting time on a long attack. Haotian caught the weapon near the guard with one hand, shifted his body inside the enemy's reach, and drove his other palm into the cultivator's chest. The force broke the defensive layer at close range and sent the demon backward into the men behind him, creating a brief compression in the line.
Lianhua and Yinxue entered through that compression.
The defenders reacted with discipline. The second rank did not scatter when the first was thrown backward, and several cultivators stepped around the fallen body to close the opening while others struck from the sides. Lianhua redirected one attack with the flat of her blade and stepped past another, cutting through the exposed arm of a demon who had overextended while trying to reach Haotian. Yinxue moved along the opposite edge of the opening, forcing the defenders there to divide their attention between her sword and the mixed formation pushing behind her.
The coalition's first legion reached the intersection before the demons could seal the gap.
Blue Sphere cultivators absorbed the direct resistance while Pyrelith members attacked the weakened formation structures still supporting the defensive line. Marephoros cultivators controlled the side streets, preventing the defenders from widening the engagement and wrapping around the coalition's front. The different groups did not need separate orders for every movement anymore; weeks of fighting together had reduced much of their coordination to familiar signals and practiced responses.
The demon commander at the intersection recognized the problem before his line fully failed.
"Second company, withdraw to the next junction. First company hold until they clear."
The order moved cleanly through the formation.
The demons nearest the rear began withdrawing by sections rather than turning at once, while the first company compressed its line and increased the density of the defense. The maneuver gave the second company enough room to leave without becoming entangled with those still fighting. It also meant the first company would face the coalition with less depth once the withdrawal was complete.
Haotian did not chase the retreating ranks.
He continued breaking the defenders directly in front of him.
A spear thrust toward his throat from behind the first rank. He turned his shoulder, let the weapon pass beside him, and caught the shaft before the wielder could recover. One pull dragged the demon forward into the opening, where Tianlan's spear struck from the side and drove through the weakened defense around the cultivator's ribs.
Tianlan withdrew his weapon immediately rather than remaining in place. His wrapped forearm still limited how much unnecessary strain he could afford, so he kept his movements compact and avoided the larger rotational attacks he had used earlier in the assault. The two Frost Rainbow Falcons remained above the intersection, watching the surrounding roofs rather than diving into a fight the ground formations were already winning.
The first demon company held long enough for the second to clear the junction.
Then its commander ordered withdrawal.
The front ranks disengaged first under the cover of the stronger cultivators behind them, while formation plates along the road released one final burst to slow pursuit. Haotian allowed the demons to leave once they stopped blocking the coalition's route. The army moved through the intersection instead of following them toward the secondary defensive position they were trying to establish.
The choice forced the demons to abandon another prepared battle.
Their commander had expected the coalition to continue directly after them because the retreat offered an obvious opportunity to inflict more casualties. Instead, Haotian turned onto a broader military road leading closer to the gate district. The demons who had withdrawn to the next junction were left protecting a position the coalition no longer needed to take.
News of the bypass traveled faster than the demons themselves.
The front-line commanders began understanding that Haotian was not attempting to clear the district systematically. He was choosing only the routes and structures necessary to reach the rear of the gate defenses. Every position they reinforced away from that path risked becoming irrelevant as soon as the coalition changed roads.
Several commands were revised.
