Chapter 555 - Chapter 433

Mobile companies were ordered to abandon secondary intersections and move toward the gate district itself. Formation masters stopped trying to reverse smaller arrays that could not influence the coalition's likely path. Strong cultivators were pulled from exterior observation posts and concentrated around command structures, gate seals, and the larger defensive formations that still possessed enough flexibility to be useful.

That response made the resistance ahead stronger.

It also stripped the outer defensive line of much of its internal support.

Haotian felt the changes through the Dao of the Universe as the coalition advanced. Troops were moving away from the walls, reserve formations were converging toward the interior side of the gates, and several energy networks were being shut down rather than risk having their channels destroyed while operating backward. The demons had correctly identified which systems mattered most.

Xuanyin received the same pattern through the scouts.

"They're consolidating around the main gate structures," she reported.

Haotian looked toward the concentration ahead. "How much of the outer line are they abandoning?"

"More every minute."

"Good."

Xuanyin understood the implication. "You don't intend to fight the whole front army."

"No."

Haotian continued forward.

If the demons chose to abandon sections of the exterior line to protect the gate controls from inside, then the coalition did not need to destroy those abandoned positions individually. Once the gate network and its supporting formations were broken, much of the outward-facing defensive structure would lose the coordination that made it useful as a front line.

The next defensive layer began before the coalition reached the main gates themselves.

Unlike the first intersection, this position had been prepared with enough warning to form a coherent inward-facing line. Heavy companies occupied the central road, mobile elites stood behind them, and formation masters had successfully redirected several adjustable arrays toward the interior. Elevated positions on both sides contained ranged cultivators who had turned away from the walls and were now looking down into the approach.

Celestara scouts identified the elevated threat before the coalition entered range.

The information reached Xuanyin first, then the commanders near the front. Instead of ordering the entire arrowhead to stop, Haotian adjusted the advance so the leading formations moved closer to the reinforced buildings on the western side of the road. The angle reduced the number of elevated positions that could attack simultaneously while Celestara cultivators moved through the upper levels to contest the nearest platforms.

The first ranged attacks came from farther east.

Dark projectiles and concentrated energy descended toward the coalition at steep angles, striking rooftops, defensive screens, and the edges of the formation. Several attacks penetrated far enough to injure cultivators in the outer ranks, but healers were already positioned to receive anyone who could no longer maintain formation. The legion did not stop moving because of isolated wounds.

The elevated defenders attempted to shift their fire as the coalition hugged the western side.

Celestara cultivators reached the nearest platform before that adjustment was complete.

The fighting above remained smaller than the battle on the road, but it immediately reduced the pressure on the formations below. Several demons were forced away from firing positions to defend themselves at close range, while others moved toward neighboring structures rather than risk becoming trapped on platforms connected by narrow bridges.

Haotian watched the central defensive line instead.

The heavy companies had formed well.

Their first ranks carried large defensive weapons and reinforced body arts, while the cultivators behind them prepared attacks designed to strike over or between those shields. Mobile elites remained farther back, waiting for an opening rather than wasting themselves against the strongest part of the coalition's advance.

That structure would have been troublesome if Haotian had needed to defeat it head-on.

He did not.

The Dao of the Universe showed several energy channels beneath the road connecting the position to a larger formation station closer to the walls. The demons had reversed the station successfully enough to support the central defense, but the new direction of flow relied on fewer channels because many of the original exterior connections could not contribute from the interior side.

Haotian pointed toward the eastern edge of the road.

"Formation support."

Pyrelith cultivators near the front changed direction immediately.

The demons saw them moving and reinforced the edge before they could reach the nearest exposed channel. Several heavy defenders shifted east, opening the central line slightly while protecting the formation structures. The response was exactly what Haotian expected.

Blue Sphere cultivators increased pressure on the center.

The collision became heavier.

The first ranks of both sides locked against one another across the road, weapons striking defensive surfaces at close range while attacks from deeper formations passed through carefully controlled openings. The demons held better here than they had at the earlier intersection because their line had been given enough time to prepare, and the coalition's advance slowed for the first time since changing direction.

Haotian did not force the center immediately.

He moved along the front while observing how the demons redistributed weight between the road and the threatened formation support. Each time the Pyrelith cultivators pressed closer to the eastern channels, more defenders shifted away from the center. Each time Blue Sphere cultivators pushed harder against the resulting weakness, the demons moved some of that strength back.

The defense was functioning.

It was also being forced to answer two problems with the same troops.

Yueru reached the front beside Haotian after rotating out of an earlier position. Lightning moved along her sword without being released in a broad attack, held close enough that the energy sharpened around the blade rather than spreading through the surrounding formations. Haotian indicated the section where the central defenders had just shifted again.

She moved through the opening before they could close it.

Her sword struck the connection between two defensive cultivators rather than either man directly. Lightning passed through their overlapping protective layers, disrupting the momentary synchronization that allowed the two barriers to reinforce one another. Blue Sphere cultivators behind her hit the same point before the demons could restore the relationship.

The central line bent backward several steps.

The mobile elites behind it finally entered.

They moved with much greater speed than the heavy defenders, targeting the cultivators who had pushed deepest into the opening rather than trying to stop the entire coalition at once. One went directly for Yueru, another toward the Blue Sphere commander beside her, and two more attempted to reach the Pyrelith group threatening the eastern formation channels.

Haotian intercepted the nearest elite before he reached Yueru.

The demon changed direction as soon as Haotian entered his path and slashed across the body with a curved weapon rather than committing to the original target. Haotian shifted inside the arc, struck the cultivator's wrist hard enough to spoil the angle, and drove a knee into the lower torso. The demon absorbed part of the impact through his defensive cultivation and retaliated immediately with the opposite elbow.

Haotian caught the arm against his forearm and rotated through the contact.

The motion dragged the demon off balance for less than a second, but that was enough. Haotian's palm struck beneath the ribs before the cultivator could reset his stance, breaking through the weakened defense at close range. The demon was thrown backward into the heavy ranks he had just passed through.

The other elites performed better.

One reached the Pyrelith cultivators and forced them away from the formation support before they could finish damaging the channels. Another drove the Blue Sphere commander back from the central opening. The defensive line began recovering its shape as the mobile fighters relieved pressure at the most threatened points.

Lianhua and Ziyue entered from opposite sides.

Neither chased the mobile elites individually. They attacked the spaces the elites were trying to stabilize, forcing the demons to spend their speed defending the line rather than striking into the coalition's weaker ranks. Every time one moved to reinforce the Pyrelith side, pressure increased at the center; every time another shifted toward the center, the formation channels became vulnerable again.

The demons continued adapting.

Their commander abandoned the attempt to protect every support point and ordered the eastern channels severed deliberately. Formation masters shut them down before the Pyrelith cultivators could trigger an uncontrolled collapse, accepting a weaker central array in exchange for preventing damage from spreading into the larger network.

The formation pressure against the coalition dropped.

Haotian felt it immediately.

"Forward."

The arrowhead pressed into the reduced defense.

The heavy companies still held, but they no longer possessed enough formation support to absorb the coalition's combined pressure without giving ground. Their line retreated several meters, stopped, then withdrew again as the mixed legion behind Haotian increased its depth through the center.

The demon commander saw where the battle was going.

He did not order a final stand.

"Fall back to the gate district. Keep the companies together."

The mobile elites disengaged first by striking at the coalition's front long enough to create separation. Heavy defenders then withdrew in blocks, maintaining enough order that the retreat did not turn into a collapse. Formation masters shut down the remaining adjustable arrays behind them rather than leaving active systems for the coalition to destroy while they were still connected to the larger network.

The coalition followed only as far as necessary to clear the road.

Xuanyin's order reached the deeper legions almost immediately. "Do not chase retreating companies into side positions. Maintain the direction of advance."

The command prevented the outer formations from spreading toward wounded or isolated demons left near the roads. Those enemies who could withdraw away from the coalition were allowed to do so. The army kept moving toward the front.

The defensive district narrowed ahead.

Large walls and gate-support structures began dominating the view between the military compounds. The rear faces of several towers were visible now, their thickest armor and firing apertures still oriented toward the exterior. Energy moved through them, but the structures lacked the geometry needed to project the same force inward without substantial reconfiguration.

Yinxue studied one of the towers as the coalition passed beneath its effective firing angle.

"They built all of this to stop us from reaching the gates."

Haotian looked toward the rear of the structure. "From the other side."

A tower crew attempted to compensate by redirecting an attack through a side opening.

The angle was poor.

The energy struck the edge of a neighboring structure instead of the coalition's center, tearing through stone and sending fragments across the road. Several cultivators raised defenses against the debris while the army continued moving.

The demons inside the tower stopped firing rather than risk damaging more of their own position.

Farther ahead, the gate-control district had finally become fully active.

Cultivation pressures gathered there in much greater numbers, including several individuals stronger than the officers encountered along the approach. Formation masters were concentrating around the primary seals, while heavy companies occupied every direct road into the district. Reserve units from the exterior wall had turned inward and were still arriving.

The front-line command had given up trying to preserve the original defensive arrangement.

Now it was trying to save the gates themselves.

Haotian could feel several of the largest outward-facing arrays shutting down behind the defenders. Their energy was being redirected toward the gate controls, secondary barriers, and whatever mobile formations could be established quickly. The process weakened the front defenses facing outside but created a more coherent resistance against the coalition approaching from within.

Xuanyin watched the change through the reports.

"They're stripping the exterior line."

Haotian continued walking.

"How much?"

"Enough that several wall sectors have lost their main formation support."

"Then they made the choice for us."

The demons had concentrated what remained useful around the one position Haotian already intended to destroy.

The coalition passed the last broad military intersection before the gate-control district.

From there, the geometry of the stronghold opened enough that the enormous front gates could finally be seen beyond layers of walls, towers, and defensive structures. They remained closed, their seals intact, while dark formation patterns spread across their surface and into the foundations beneath them.

The strongest defenses still faced outward.

The army defending them now faced inward.

Haotian stopped for only a moment to examine the entire arrangement through the Dao of the Universe.

The gate district was no longer confused.

The demons had completed their response.

Heavy companies had established an inward-facing line. Mobile elites occupied the spaces behind them. Formation masters had preserved the systems that could still contribute. Strong cultivators guarded the primary command and sealing structures. The defenders had abandoned enough of the original front line to build a real battle position against the coalition.

Haotian looked over the formation once.

Then he moved forward again.

The gate district had been built to absorb pressure from the exterior for as long as necessary. Reinforced walls divided the approach into controlled lanes, formation towers overlapped their fields of fire toward the lands beyond the stronghold, and thick defensive channels ran beneath the ground toward the main gates and the structures supporting them. From the interior side, however, those same arrangements created narrow spaces between systems that had never been intended to resist a full army approaching from behind. The demons had compensated as much as possible with troops, mobile formations, and redirected arrays, but the basic geometry of the district had not changed with them.

Haotian advanced at the center of the arrowhead while the Dao of the Universe spread through the gate defenses before him. He did not simply examine the cultivators standing in the roads. His perception traced the deeper relationships between the gate seals, the formation anchors buried beneath reinforced platforms, the towers feeding power into the exterior defensive network, and the command relays responsible for coordinating those systems. Several lines had already been shut down by the demons themselves, while others continued to carry power toward defensive structures that could not effectively turn inward.

The primary gate seals remained the most important part of the network.

They were not supported by a single formation that could be destroyed with one strike. Multiple channels converged beneath the district, feeding separate locking structures embedded into the walls, the ground, and the enormous doors themselves. Even if one section failed, the remaining structures could continue holding the gates closed until enough of the network was destroyed to remove the balance between them.

Haotian did not need to understand how the Abyss had constructed every mechanism.

He only needed to understand where the system depended upon itself.

The first inward-facing line waited several hundred paces ahead. Heavy companies occupied the center, their formations layered deeply enough that the front ranks could absorb pressure while cultivators farther back reinforced them. Stronger demons stood behind those companies instead of joining the first collision, while formation masters remained near the gate-support platforms with guards positioned around them.

The coalition continued forward in order.

No legion rushed ahead of the rest.

The demons opened the battle before the coalition reached the first line.

A redirected array released from one of the gate-support platforms, sending a broad sheet of dark force across the interior road. Unlike the earlier formations that had been reversed hastily, this one had been given enough time to stabilize. The energy struck with much greater coherence, flattening loose debris across the street and slamming into the defensive arts raised along the front of the coalition.

The first mixed ranks absorbed the impact without breaking.

Several cultivators were driven backward half a step before the formations behind them redistributed the pressure through overlapping defenses. Haotian remained inside the leading edge of the attack, allowing the Dao of the Universe to follow the energy backward toward the platform that had released it. The formation possessed enough secondary channels to avoid the instability he had exploited earlier, but those channels all converged through two reinforced points beneath the western side of the platform.

He turned his hand slightly.

Lianhua saw the signal.

She moved with Yinxue toward the western side while Haotian continued directly toward the central defensive line. The demons recognized the shift and responded immediately, moving a group of elite cultivators away from the center to protect the formation platform. That movement reduced the pressure waiting directly in front of Haotian.

He did not accelerate.

The demons were already giving him the opening he wanted.

The heavy companies braced when the coalition entered striking distance.

Their first rank drove reinforced weapons into the ground and locked their defenses together, while the second released concentrated attacks through narrow gaps. The road disappeared beneath overlapping flashes of dark energy, weapon light, and defensive cultivation as both formations met. The impact spread through the surrounding structures hard enough to shake dust from the walls and fracture weaker stone along the nearby buildings.

Blue Sphere cultivators met the center without trying to overpower the entire formation at once. They absorbed the first pressure and kept the demons occupied while the mixed ranks behind them maintained enough depth to prevent the front from being compressed backward. Marephoros cultivators worked along the outer edges of the engagement, restricting the space available to demonic companies attempting to widen the line and attack around the sides.

Haotian entered the collision where the two formations pressed hardest against one another.

A heavy axe descended toward him from above.

He shifted outside the center of the strike, caught the weapon near the haft with his left hand, and drove his right fist into the demon's sternum. The cultivator's layered defense absorbed part of the force, but Haotian's strike passed through the momentary weakness created when the man committed his weight to the axe. The impact threw him backward into the second rank and disrupted the reinforcement behind him.

Another demon immediately stepped into the opening.

Haotian did not give him time to stabilize.

His palm struck the cultivator's shoulder and forced the upper body aside before the demon could bring his weapon fully into line. Haotian followed with a short elbow to the ribs, then stepped through the space while the man was still recovering. Two more defenders moved together to close the opening, their attacks timed closely enough that evading one would place him in the path of the other.

Haotian changed his position through Thousand Mirage Steps without calling the movement aloud.

The first attack passed through the space he had occupied.

He reappeared just beyond the overlap between the two demons, struck the nearer cultivator behind the elbow, and used the disrupted arm to alter the second man's attack. The weapons collided against each other for an instant, opening both bodies before Haotian drove a palm strike into one and a knee into the other.

The gap widened.

The coalition pushed into it.

The demons did not collapse.

Their commander shifted several defenders from the adjacent rank into the opening and ordered the deeper formations to reinforce the center. The heavy company shortened its line instead of trying to preserve the full width of the road, giving up space along the edges in exchange for greater density where Haotian was pressing.

That decision slowed the coalition.

It also exposed more of the western formation platform.

Lianhua and Yinxue reached the elite guards protecting it.

The first guard met Lianhua with a long sword held low, clearly intending to force her away from the structural supports rather than chase her into open combat. She accepted the pressure for several exchanges, redirecting his blade while continuing to move toward the platform instead of trying to defeat him immediately. The demon adjusted each time, using his position rather than reckless attacks to keep himself between her and the formation anchor.

Yinxue fought another guard several paces away.

Their swords met repeatedly at close range, neither cultivator wasting energy on large displays when the space between the platform and nearby structures remained narrow. Yinxue tested the demon's defense twice, then shifted her angle just enough to force him away from the formation surface he was protecting. He followed because allowing her a direct line to the platform was more dangerous than giving up the original position.

That movement separated the two guards.

Lianhua immediately changed direction.

Cloud-Sundering Steps carried her through the opening between them before either could close it. She reached the lower side of the platform and drove the Voidpierce Sword Sutra through the protective layer covering the first support connection. The sword did not need to destroy the entire formation surface. It penetrated deeply enough to cut the relationship beneath the armor.

The array above them trembled.

Formation masters reacted instantly.

Two redirected power channels shut down before the damage could spread, and guards farther back moved toward Lianhua before she could strike again. The broad attack pressing against the coalition weakened, but the platform remained active.

Yinxue intercepted the first reinforcement.

Her sword struck across the demon's weapon and forced it downward, giving Lianhua enough time to move away from the damaged support before the next group arrived. Neither woman remained trapped near the platform. They withdrew several paces, forcing the guards to decide whether to follow them or remain with the damaged formation.

The guards stayed.

That was enough.

Haotian felt the drop in formation pressure through the central line.

"Push."

The order passed through the front.

The mixed legion increased pressure without losing cohesion. Blue Sphere cultivators drove the heavy defenders backward several steps while Pyrelith fighters moved toward the exposed eastern edge of the demonic position. The demons attempted to reinforce both sides at once, but the loss of support from the damaged platform made every redistribution more difficult.

A mobile elite group entered the battle from behind the heavy companies.

They did not charge Haotian.

Instead, they struck at the mixed cultivators who had advanced farthest into the narrowing center, trying to cut the coalition's leading formation away from the deeper ranks. The decision was better than wasting strong fighters against Haotian personally, and for several moments it worked.

Two Blue Sphere cultivators were driven from their positions.

A Pyrelith fighter took a heavy wound across the shoulder and had to withdraw before the mobile elite could finish him. Another demon reached the seam between two mixed formations and forced them apart far enough that the heavy company began pushing into the opening.

Shuyue reacted from farther back.

She did not rush into the front line.

Her Dao Palace of Virtues spread through the nearby coalition formations, reinforcing the cultivators whose balance and circulation had begun to deteriorate under sustained pressure. The effect did not make them stronger than they were, but it restored enough stability for the separated groups to close the gap before the demons could widen it.

The wounded Pyrelith cultivator was pulled backward.

A reserve fighter replaced him almost immediately.

The mobile elites lost the opening.
