The officers moved through the stronghold piece by piece rather than reducing the situation to one total. In the east, the demons had suffered heavy manpower losses and lost much of their ability to coordinate across districts. In the west, surviving companies had more intact strength but weaker connections to the rest of the base. The southern portions the coalition had passed through showed varying levels of damage depending on which roads and formation systems had crossed Haotian's direction of advance.
The deaths of several Demon Generals had complicated those divisions further. Those Generals had possessed enough authority to coordinate formations far beyond a single district, and their loss forced surviving officers to rely more heavily on whoever remained locally accessible. The demons had adapted sensibly by consolidating troops under the strongest surviving command structures, but the result was still a stronghold behaving increasingly like several defensive regions rather than one army responding with the same information at the same time.
Communication routes reflected the same problem. Some direct roads and elevated crossings between important sectors had been destroyed, while underground passages that once provided shorter reinforcement routes had been collapsed where they threatened the coalition's advance. The demons still possessed alternative paths, but many required longer movement through sections that had not been designed to carry the same volume of troops or messengers.
A Celestara officer leaned over the map and pointed toward one of the elevated links destroyed during the assault. "The elevated crossing between these two sectors is still unusable. Our scouts have seen troops using the lower roads to move around it, but nothing has crossed directly since we left."
A Veridian cultivator traced a nearby underground branch. "The underground passage below the same area is still collapsed. They can move troops between the sectors, but the detour forces them around both obstructions."
"How long would they need to reopen the underground passage for a full company?" Xuanyin asked.
"Longer than repairing the elevated crossing," the Veridian cultivator said. "They would need to clear the collapsed section, inspect the remaining supports, reinforce the damaged tunnel, and then restore whatever formations protected it. They could open a narrow path sooner, but not one I would trust for moving a large formation quickly."
Xuanyin marked the route as damaged rather than permanently destroyed. The demons had already shown enough discipline that she expected them to repair whatever still mattered to the defense.
The front defensive district presented a different problem because the damage there was not simply a matter of blocked movement. The main gate network had been broken through several separate dependencies, and the physical locking structures themselves had been damaged after the formations failed. Towers and defensive platforms still stood, but many had lost the channels that once allowed them to operate as part of the same coordinated system.
A Pyrelith officer examined the front markings. "They can build another defensive line here, but rebuilding the original gate network would require more than repairing the damaged doors."
"What would they have to divert from the rest of the stronghold to restore meaningful defensive depth around the front?" Xuanyin asked.
"Formation masters, construction materials, replacement nodes, and enough troops to protect the work while it is being done. If they try to rebuild anything close to the original system quickly, the resources have to come from another sector."
That was the useful part of the damage.
The surviving demons could no longer reinforce every damaged part of the base equally. They had lost too many troops and too many command links to rebuild every sector at once. Wherever they placed the strongest formations, the most experienced formation masters, and the largest mobile reserves would reveal what they believed Haotian was most likely to do next.
By the time Haotian joined the operational review, his healer had allowed him to move through the Dao Palace of Creation without remaining under direct supervision. His shoulder was still bound beneath his robe and the injuries across his torso had not finished healing, but he could walk normally enough that no one objected when he entered the command area. Xuanyin condensed the assessments rather than making him read every individual report before the broader situation was clear.
"Approximately half of the interior military strength is gone," she said. "The eastern sectors suffered the worst losses. Several western and untouched regions preserved more troops than we could see during the march out. The front defensive network will take significant work to rebuild, and several underground and elevated reinforcement routes are still unusable."
Haotian studied the map. "What do we know about the surviving Demon Generals and the command regions they have taken over?"
"We have confirmation that several Generals remain alive, but we do not have reliable positions for all of them yet. The Umbrel scouts are seeing activity around several local command centers, though we cannot tell which General is using which location."
"Keep observing the command centers from a safe distance," Haotian said. "Do not force scouts closer just to identify individual Generals. Their deployment patterns matter more than knowing exactly which one is standing in each district."
The Umbrel officer acknowledged the instruction.
Haotian remained over the map for several moments after that, comparing the damaged sectors with the regions that had escaped the heaviest fighting. The stronghold had originally been designed to respond to pressure from outside, using its internal roads and formation networks to move troops toward whichever wall or gate required support. After the first assault, the demons now had to account for a completely different threat. Haotian had demonstrated that he could enter the base alone, establish a safe point inside, and release the coalition from the Dao Palace of Creation without needing to break through the exterior defenses first.
One of the coalition commanders pointed toward the original infiltration region. "The surviving Generals will have to reinforce the twelve o'clock side. If they leave the rear under the same surveillance pattern you used the first time, you can repeat the infiltration."
Another commander looked toward the damaged gate district. "They also cannot leave six o'clock lightly defended while the main gates are broken. A direct exterior assault is more realistic now than it was before."
Xuanyin studied both regions. "Those are the two directions I expect to consume the most immediate manpower and formation resources."
Haotian followed the surviving roads between them. The demons had enough strength left to build another serious defense, but not enough to make every approach equally strong while also maintaining mobile reserves, repairing infrastructure, and protecting their surviving command.
The discussion shifted back toward the coalition. Xuanyin explained that several legions would recover considerably faster than the others and recommended rotating which formations occupied the forward positions during the next assault. The same legions had carried too much of the first operation, particularly those that repeatedly held the center while Haotian and the family attacked stronger enemy positions.
A Blue Sphere commander studied the previous assault markings. "When we attack again, are we keeping the same concentrated arrowhead and continuing along another sweeping route?"
Haotian looked over the map rather than answering from habit. "The mixed legions stay mixed, and the coalition stays concentrated. We will decide the exact formation and direction of advance after the demons finish redistributing their surviving forces."
"So we wait until their temporary movements settle?" the commander asked.
"Yes. I want to see which sectors they decide are important enough to reinforce permanently."
The answer gave the observation period a specific purpose. If the rear received the heaviest surveillance and response forces, then the surviving commanders feared another infiltration through the same direction. If the damaged front consumed their repair resources and mobile reserves, they expected a conventional assault against the gates. If they attempted to protect everything equally, their remaining strength would be diluted across too many positions.
Haotian did not need to choose before they did.
The operational review ended without a new attack order. Commanders returned to their legions with instructions to continue recovery, workshops were given enough time to repair equipment properly, and healers were told to keep injured cultivators out of combat status until their recovery was genuine.
That decision affected the family as much as the ordinary formations. Tianlan's forearm continued healing, but the healer still refused to let him begin spear practice simply because he could move the hand without much pain. The two Frost Rainbow Falcons that had fought inside the stronghold remained with the third bird and continued resting rather than returning to training flights.
Lianhua's circulation improved over the next several recovery cycles as the strain caused by repeated spatial manipulation gradually eased. Yinxue regained full steadiness in her sword hand and spent more time restoring her cultivation than testing the repaired edge of her weapon. Yueru and Yanfei recovered more slowly by choice, both preferring complete stability over the appearance of being ready sooner.
Xiangyin received her repaired spear from the workshop but left it beside her while the remaining strain through her shoulders continued to fade. Shuyue obeyed Xuanyin's order to rest longer than anyone expected, and once the healers confirmed that the trembling in her hands had stopped and the burden on her Dao Palace of Virtues had eased, she was allowed to help with lighter recovery work again.
Haotian divided his own time between recovery and the reports arriving from outside. He did not remain in the command area continuously, and when the healer requested another examination, he returned without forcing Xuanyin to argue with him. The reopened wounds along his side were finally closing properly, while the stiffness in his shoulder continued decreasing as the damaged tissue recovered.
There was no reason to hurry the next step.
The longer the demons were allowed to believe they had time to rebuild their defenses, the more clearly their choices became visible. Umbrel scouts began reporting heavier patrol activity around the regions near the original rear infiltration. Additional observers appeared there, and several small mobile formations were moved toward positions from which they could respond quickly if another hidden entry were detected.
Activity around the damaged front increased as well. Temporary barriers appeared behind the broken gates, troops were consolidated in the districts immediately beyond them, and formation masters began reconnecting whatever parts of the exterior defensive network could be restored without rebuilding the entire system. The work remained incomplete, but the commitment of troops and resources made the enemy's priorities increasingly obvious.
Haotian waited until the pattern had continued long enough to become worth observing directly.
When he finally left the Dao Palace of Creation again, Xuanyin followed him as far as the passage. "Their front and rear deployments are still changing. Confirm which positions are becoming permanent before you choose an infiltration direction."
"That is all I am going out to determine," Haotian said.
He stepped outside and allowed the passage to close behind him.
The main gates remained visible in the distance, but the opening the coalition had forced through them was no longer unobstructed. The demons had erected temporary barriers behind the damaged entrance, using reinforced debris, portable formations, and whatever intact structures could be moved quickly enough to create another defensive layer. Sections of the original gate remained broken, and the new barriers did not possess the same relationship with the towers and wall formations that had supported the old system.
Haotian remained well outside their range and extended the Dao of the Universe toward the stronghold.
The front had changed significantly since he last observed it. More troops occupied the damaged gate district now, but they were arranged farther inward rather than directly around the broken doors. Mobile companies moved between the new barriers and nearby military roads, allowing them to reinforce several positions without being tied to one fixed line. Formation masters worked continuously around the surviving towers and platforms, reconnecting whatever channels remained useful while abandoning structures too badly damaged to justify the effort.
The demons were not trying to recreate the original front exactly as it had been. Too much had been destroyed for that. Instead, they were building layered defensive depth behind the damaged gate district, using the entrance as the first obstacle rather than the final line. The arrangement gave mobile formations room to fall back without becoming trapped against the broken gates if the coalition attacked directly from outside.
Haotian shifted his perception toward the rear.
The difference there was even more obvious.
The original infiltration region had once been guarded by ordinary patrol patterns and detection formations intended to watch for small groups, scouts, or isolated intruders. Now the demons had placed additional observers along the approach, strengthened several detection arrays, and positioned mobile response formations within reach of the areas Haotian had used during the first assault. Patrols overlapped more frequently, and the gaps between them were smaller.
The patrol patterns had changed as well. Instead of following predictable circuits between fixed positions, several groups varied their routes and timing enough that slipping between them would require more patience than before. Stronger cultivators occasionally accompanied the ordinary patrols, while others remained stationed near formation points supporting the reinforced surveillance.
The twelve o'clock approach was no longer a soft point.
Haotian could still infiltrate through it if necessary, but doing so would mean entering an area whose defenders were actively preparing for that exact possibility. Opening the Dao Palace of Creation there would place the coalition against troops already positioned to respond to another hidden entry. Nothing about repeating the original route gave him an advantage worth paying for.
The front presented a similar problem for different reasons. Six o'clock remained physically damaged, but the number of troops gathered behind it had increased substantially. Several companies were positioned to react quickly if another army approached the gates from outside, while others remained farther back where they could reinforce nearby wall sectors.
Haotian continued observing instead of deciding anything yet. Movement between sectors remained constant as troops were reassigned, local commanders consolidated survivors, and formation masters redirected resources toward whatever positions their superiors considered most important. The changes were still fluid enough that choosing an infiltration direction immediately would risk basing the plan on temporary deployments.
He returned to the Dao Palace of Creation several hours later.
Xuanyin met him at the command map once he had entered. "What did the surviving Generals change around the original twelve o'clock infiltration route?"
"They increased the patrol density, made the patrol timing irregular, connected several detection formations that were separate before, and placed mobile response companies behind the surveillance layers," Haotian said. "I could still enter through that region, but opening the Dao Palace of Creation there would put the coalition directly against defenses designed for another infiltration."
Xuanyin marked the new arrangement. "What changed around the damaged front gates?"
"They are building defensive depth behind the gates instead of recreating the original line. The strongest change is the number of mobile formations positioned to answer a direct attack from outside."
That matched the scouts.
Neither of them treated the adaptation as surprising. The remaining commanders had survived because they were capable of learning from what had happened, and rebuilding the stronghold without accounting for Haotian's infiltration would have been irrational.
The important change lay in where those improvements consumed troops and formation resources.
Xuanyin had already begun comparing reports from the front and rear with activity elsewhere around the base. Several regions between those heavily reinforced directions had received fewer additional troops. Patrols existed there and some local defenses had been strengthened, but the concentration was clearly lower.
The next day produced more information. Umbrel scouts reported that several rear formations had stopped relocating and begun constructing stronger observation positions. Formation masters established additional detection points around the routes most likely to conceal an infiltrator, while mobile companies were assigned nearby areas where they could respond without remaining directly on the patrol lines.
The front continued strengthening at the same time. The temporary barriers behind the gates grew more substantial, and troops stationed there began drilling around the new defensive arrangement instead of merely occupying it. Portable formations were linked together to create partial overlaps where the original network had been destroyed.
The demons were not placing all of their strength at six and twelve o'clock. They still maintained troops around the rest of the stronghold, and several surviving sectors required substantial forces simply because abandoning them would expose internal resources and command positions. The difference was proportional rather than absolute, but it was becoming stable enough to matter.
Haotian studied those changes from the map before returning outside again.
This time he moved far enough around the stronghold that the broken front gates disappeared behind the curve of the outer defenses. He did not search for an unguarded section of wall, because after the first assault no competent commander would leave any portion of the stronghold completely unwatched. Instead, he compared each section against what the demons had already committed elsewhere, using the Dao of the Universe to follow patrol movement on the exterior, troop concentrations behind the walls, formation channels beneath the local defenses, and the roads the nearest reserves would have to use if an attack developed there.
The first side sector offered little advantage. Its exterior patrols were lighter than those around the rear, but a large interior company had temporarily stopped near one of the adjoining military roads, shortening the reinforcement distance enough that opening the Dao Palace of Creation nearby would give the coalition less time than Haotian wanted. He watched until it became clear that the company was still relocating toward the front rather than remaining permanently, then continued around the stronghold.
The next sector was stronger for a different reason. Its patrol density remained ordinary, but two functioning formation stations overlapped across most of the usable interior ground behind the wall. Haotian could infiltrate through the exterior defenses without difficulty, yet releasing thousands of coalition cultivators there would immediately place the first formations beneath systems already facing the space in which they would appear.
That distinction guided the rest of his search. Haotian was not looking for somewhere he could enter alone. Ordinary patrols and detection formations were insufficient to stop him when he committed his stealth, Space, and Universe perception to infiltration. What mattered was whether the ground beyond those defenses could receive the coalition before the demons understood what was happening and concentrated enough strength to contest the deployment point.
He moved farther toward the lower-left side of the stronghold.
The arrangement changed gradually rather than at one obvious boundary. Patrol groups still crossed the outer approaches, towers remained occupied, and local formations continued watching the surrounding terrain, but the deeper support behind those defenses became less substantial. Companies assigned to the sector were positioned around local military structures instead of massed near the wall, and the roads connecting them to stronger formations led laterally toward regions closer to the damaged front and the central portions of the base.
Haotian stopped where the orientation corresponded approximately to eight o'clock on the coalition's campaign map and extended the Dao of the Universe much farther inward.
The exterior defenses alone did not explain why the region interested him. A patrol moved beneath one tower while another crossed the next section several minutes later, and a functioning detection formation covered the most obvious approach between them. Local defenders inside the wall maintained enough discipline that an ordinary infiltration group would have difficulty moving through the region without eventually being noticed.
Haotian ignored the surface pattern and followed the forces behind it.
The nearest substantial reserve was not stationed in the eight o'clock sector. It lay farther toward the front. Another stronger group was positioned deeper inward where it could support several central districts, but the road connecting it to the eight o'clock side curved through two intersections before reaching the local defensive area.
If the coalition attacked from six o'clock, the front reserve could reinforce almost immediately. If Haotian entered again from twelve o'clock, the rear formations and mobile forces positioned behind them could converge without abandoning their prepared direction. If the coalition appeared at eight o'clock, both responses became slower.
Haotian traced the front reserve's most direct route toward the side sector. It would have to leave the damaged gate district, turn away from the defenses it had been assigned to reinforce, travel laterally through the interior road network, and then reorganize when it reached a battle whose orientation would be completely different from the frontal attack it had been expecting. The stronger formation farther inside had a shorter distance, but moving toward eight o'clock would expose the central area it was currently helping cover.
The rear response was worse. Those forces had been placed to detect and contain another infiltration around twelve o'clock. Reaching eight required them to travel around a considerable portion of the stronghold or cut inward through routes that had already been damaged during the first assault.
Haotian remained where he was and watched the patrol cycle repeat.
The local defenders were alert, but they were arranged to defend their sector against an enemy approaching from outside. Their towers watched the surrounding terrain, their detection formations covered the wall approaches, and their companies were positioned to support those structures if an exterior force attempted to break through. None of those preparations assumed that a single cultivator would pass through the defensive layers, move farther inside, secure enough space, and then open an inner world from which an entire coalition army could emerge.
The first assault had taught the demons that possibility.
Their response to that lesson had been concentrated at the rear.
Haotian examined the interior terrain for a potential deployment point rather than stopping at the wall itself. Several locations were unsuitable because they were too narrow for the coalition to establish depth quickly, while another lay too close to a functioning formation station. Farther inward, however, he found a broader military area connected to multiple roads but separated from the nearest large reserve by enough distance that the local defenders would have to hold alone during the first response.
That was more important than finding a weak wall.
If Haotian reached that area unnoticed, the coalition would not have to emerge directly against the exterior fortifications. He could release them from inside the side sector, already beyond much of the defensive orientation facing outward. The first mixed formations could establish themselves while the local troops were still turning toward an enemy that had appeared behind part of their own defensive structure.
One road led toward the damaged front sectors, another moved deeper into the surviving base, and a third connected toward positions that could eventually receive reinforcements from the rear. The geometry gave the coalition options after deployment rather than forcing it into a single path. More importantly, every meaningful demonic reinforcement would have to approach the eight o'clock position from somewhere else.
Haotian continued observing instead of accepting the position immediately.
One patrol completed its route and disappeared behind a tower. Several minutes passed before the next group entered the same general area. The timing was regular enough that Haotian could identify where direct observation weakened between the two movements, while the detection formations remained arranged as separate local systems rather than overlapping layers intended specifically to expose someone using advanced concealment.
He extended a thread of Space perception toward the boundary of one formation without crossing it. Haotian examined its coverage, followed the way it interacted with the neighboring node, and confirmed that a narrow region between them relied more heavily on cultivators stationed in the towers than on continuous formation detection. The gap was not large enough for an army to pass through unnoticed, but an army was not what needed to enter from outside.
Only Haotian did.
Once he was inside, the wall ceased to be the coalition's point of entry.
The Dao Palace of Creation would be.
That changed how he evaluated every defensive layer between himself and the interior deployment area. He did not require a route broad enough for legions, supply groups, wounded transfers, or formation specialists. He needed only a path that allowed one cultivator to pass without triggering an alarm, after which the coalition would begin its attack from a location the local defenses had never been constructed to treat as an entry point.
Haotian continued around the eight o'clock sector for another hour and examined the same problem from different angles. A neighboring section possessed stronger formation overlap but fewer troops. Another possessed more troops but a worse reinforcement route. The best approach lay between them, where the exterior surveillance remained sufficient for ordinary defense while the interior deployment area remained far enough from both concentrations that neither could react immediately.
He returned to the Dao Palace of Creation without testing the route.
Xuanyin was reviewing updated recovery reports when he entered the command area. More of the coalition had returned to combat-ready condition, although several of the most heavily depleted formations still required additional recovery. Tianlan's forearm had improved enough for controlled spear movements, and the two Frost Rainbow Falcons that had fought inside the stronghold were moving normally again beside the third.
Haotian moved directly to the campaign map. "The eight o'clock sector gives us more than a lighter patrol pattern."
Xuanyin came around the table and looked toward the southwestern side. "What makes the eight o'clock sector better than the other side approaches you checked?"
Haotian traced the route from the damaged front toward the flank. "Their nearest large reserve is still committed near six o'clock. It can reinforce this sector, but it has to leave the front defenses and travel laterally before it reaches the battle. Their stronger central formation can arrive sooner, but moving it toward eight exposes the districts it is currently covering."
Xuanyin followed the routes with her finger. "How quickly can the reinforced twelve o'clock formations respond if the coalition appears here?"
"Too slowly to affect the opening deployment. Their shortest useful routes either circle through other sectors or pass through internal routes we damaged during the first assault."
Haotian moved his finger farther inside the eight o'clock sector. "More importantly, I do not intend to open the Dao Palace of Creation near the outer wall. I can pass through the exterior surveillance alone and reach this military area before opening it."
Xuanyin examined the position carefully. The area was broad enough for multiple formations to emerge without compressing against buildings or defensive structures, while several roads connected it to deeper portions of the stronghold. Local companies could reach the position quickly once they understood what was happening, but the large reserves stationed elsewhere would need time to turn and move.
"If you open the Dao Palace of Creation at that interior position, the local companies will be the only substantial force able to contest the first deployment," Xuanyin said. "The front reserve has to weaken six o'clock to reach us, and the central formation has to uncover part of the interior."
"Yes."
"And if they move both major formations at once, they answer the flank faster but weaken both of the positions those formations were assigned to protect."
"That is the advantage."
