Chapter 560 - Chapter 438

Neither treated the sector as undefended. The local commanders would respond, the troops stationed there would fight, and once the coalition appeared, the rest of the stronghold would begin moving toward them. The advantage was that those responses would begin after Haotian had already changed the direction of the battle.

Over the following days, the demons made smaller adjustments around the side regions, but none changed the larger structure Haotian had identified. Rear surveillance remained dense, the front continued consuming repair resources and mobile troops, and the central reserves retained positions intended to support those more obvious directions. Eight o'clock received local reinforcement, but no major force was permanently relocated there.

Haotian returned to the area more than once to confirm that the interior deployment point remained usable. Patrol timing varied slightly from day to day, and some local formations were adjusted, but the larger reinforcement geometry did not change because doing so would require the demons to remove strength from the directions they had decided were most dangerous.

By the final observation, the coalition inside the Dao Palace of Creation had recovered substantially as well. Most mixed legions had restored enough cultivation to return to organized combat, damaged equipment had been repaired or replaced, and the formations that had been most heavily depleted during the first assault were no longer operating far below the others.

When Haotian returned to the command area after that final observation, Xuanyin already had the latest Umbrel reports beside the map.

"Is the interior deployment area at eight o'clock still usable?" she asked.

"Yes. The local patrols and formations changed slightly, but the approach remains open to a single infiltrator and the heavy reinforcement routes have not shortened."

Xuanyin compared Haotian's observation with the scout reports. The front reserve remained near six o'clock, the central formation still covered the same interior districts, and no major rear force had shifted toward the southwest.

"Then the eight o'clock sector gives us the best place to deploy the coalition," she said.

Haotian nodded.

The weakness was no longer simply that one side of the stronghold carried fewer patrols. The demons had committed their strongest attention to the front and rear because those were the directions Haotian had already taught them to fear. In doing so, they had left the eight o'clock sector dependent on local defense and reinforcements that would have to abandon other responsibilities before they could arrive.

The surviving Demon Generals had reached the same problem from the opposite side.

They did not need Haotian to attack again before understanding that the first defense of the stronghold could not simply be restored and repeated. By the time the coalition had withdrawn into the Dao Palace of Creation, reports from the damaged sectors had already been gathered under the strongest command structures that remained intact. The numbers were incomplete, several messengers had taken longer routes because direct connections had been destroyed, and some officers could provide only what they had personally witnessed, but the larger shape of the defeat was clear enough.

The surviving Generals met only after the most urgent defensive orders had already been issued. They did not gather every important commander into the same room, and several joined through communication formations from separate sectors rather than abandoning the forces now depending on them. Losing more of the command structure to one unexpected strike would have been inexcusable after what Haotian had already demonstrated.

The largest map between them no longer resembled the one used before the coalition entered. Entire routes were marked as blocked or unreliable, several command positions had been crossed out, and large sections of the front defensive network had been reduced to disconnected structures rather than one continuous system. Temporary routes had been added where troops were already moving around collapsed passages, while new local command boundaries showed which surviving officers had taken responsibility for formations whose original commanders were dead.

One Demon General studied the rear markings. "We have to assume Haotian can infiltrate the stronghold again. The twelve o'clock approach cannot remain under the same patrol and detection pattern he already bypassed."

Another General looked toward the damaged front. "We also have to assume the coalition may attack directly through six o'clock before the gate district is rebuilt. They no longer need an interior route if they decide to force the front."

"We prepare for both threats," the first General said. "The question is how much of the remaining army we can afford to commit to each."

That shaped the discussion that followed. The demons understood that Haotian was capable of choosing an unexpected approach, but knowledge of that possibility did not remove the need to defend the places he had already proven he could exploit. Leaving the rear lightly guarded because Haotian might choose somewhere else would invite him to repeat the first infiltration under easier conditions, while leaving the front weak would allow the coalition to attack openly before repairs restored meaningful depth.

A senior formation master gave them the resource estimate. "We can create overlapping detection coverage around the original rear infiltration sector with the masters and materials currently available. Extending the same coverage around the full perimeter would require pulling formation masters away from the front reconstruction and several interior sectors."

One General looked across the side defenses. "What happens if we strengthen every outer sector enough to receive the same response time as the rear?"

"We would have to break apart the mobile reserves and station those companies around the perimeter. The stronghold would have fewer forces capable of responding once the coalition's actual direction is known."

The surviving forces were still substantial, but the first assault had reduced the margin that once allowed the stronghold to maintain fixed defenses, mobile reinforcements, local reserves, command protection, and formation repair simultaneously. Every additional company placed permanently along an outer sector was a company that could no longer respond elsewhere. Every formation master assigned to a lightly threatened wall was one less available to rebuild the front or strengthen the rear detection network.

The Generals therefore began with the threats they could prove.

At twelve o'clock, the rear received the strongest improvement in surveillance. Patrol routes were rewritten so their timing varied rather than repeating predictable circuits, and local commanders were told to avoid sending the same cultivators through the same paths every day. Detection formations that had previously operated independently were connected where possible, creating overlapping coverage around the approaches Haotian had used during the first infiltration.

The Generals did not assume those measures would make the rear impossible for Haotian to penetrate. The reports describing his stealth and movement were too incomplete for anyone to claim that with confidence. Instead, the defenses were designed to reduce the chance that he could enter, move deep enough to establish a deployment point, and open the Dao Palace of Creation before a mobile response reached him.

That required troops as well as formations. Several companies were relocated behind the rear sectors rather than directly onto the walls, allowing them to respond without tying themselves to one fixed patrol line. Stronger cultivators rotated through those companies so the rear would not depend entirely on ordinary troops if Haotian himself was discovered.

The front demanded a different solution. The original gate defense could not be restored quickly enough, and the Generals refused to pour resources into recreating a system the coalition had already demonstrated how to dismantle from inside. Formation masters instead built new defensive depth farther behind the damaged gates, using portable arrays, surviving platforms, repaired channels, and mobile companies arranged around fallback positions.

One General inspected the proposed arrangement before approving it. "Do not spend our remaining resources trying to rebuild the old gate line exactly as it was. Build the new defenses far enough behind the damaged gates that the first formation can give ground without trapping the second."

"We can separate the defensive layers and leave withdrawal paths between them," the formation master said.

"Do that. Keep the mobile reserve far enough back that it can still maneuver if the gate district is breached again."

The order reflected what the demons had learned from the first assault. Static strength had not failed because the formations were weak. It had failed because Haotian had approached from the direction they were least suited to resist and forced the defenders to convert systems under pressure.

The surviving Generals also changed how their reserves were distributed. Before the first assault, interior companies could move through a relatively efficient network of roads, underground passages, and elevated crossings. Now several of those routes were gone, and positioning one central reserve deep inside the stronghold would leave some sectors waiting too long for assistance.

The largest mobile group remained closer to the damaged front. The gates represented the easiest place for the coalition to bring its entire army against the stronghold without another infiltration, and the front reconstruction would remain vulnerable until more of the defensive network was restored. Another strong formation remained deeper inside the base, positioned where several major military roads still intersected and from which it could reinforce multiple central sectors.

The rear received smaller but faster response companies to support its reinforced detection network.

Those choices left the side sectors with competent local defenses but fewer large formations immediately behind them.

One of the Generals noticed the imbalance while the assignments were being marked and rested his hand along the southwestern side of the stronghold.

"If Haotian infiltrates through this southwestern sector and opens the Dao Palace of Creation inside it, how long can the local companies hold before the front reserve reaches them?"

The commander responsible for the region gave the estimated response time.

The General's expression tightened. "That leaves too much time for the first coalition formations to emerge."

"The central reserve can reach the southwestern sector sooner," the commander said. "But moving it there would leave the central districts with less protection."

The problem repeated itself around nearly every side sector. Reinforcing one permanently required weakening another position or removing strength from the mobile forces. The coalition had already destroyed enough of the interior army that the stronghold could no longer place a heavy response formation within immediate reach of every point along its perimeter.

Another General studied the wider deployment before speaking. "If we distribute the surviving army evenly around the perimeter, Haotian will not need surprise. He can concentrate the coalition against whichever sector he chooses and overwhelm it before the other sectors can help."

No one contradicted him.

The choice was unpleasant but rational. They could build stronger defenses around the directions most strongly supported by evidence and maintain enough mobile strength to respond elsewhere, or they could distribute the surviving army evenly and guarantee that no direction possessed enough depth to resist the coalition once Haotian released it.

They chose the first.

The southwestern sectors therefore received additional instructions rather than an entire new army. Patrols were increased modestly, local commanders were required to maintain communication with the nearest mobile formations, and formation masters checked the existing detection systems for obvious weaknesses. Stronger officers were assigned to several local companies so the first response would not collapse immediately if the coalition appeared there.

The Generals did not identify eight o'clock as safe.

They simply could not justify treating it as equally dangerous as the rear Haotian had already used or the front he had already broken open.

The surviving command structure was reorganized at the same time. Important officers were moved away from several known command posts, and no Demon General remained continuously inside a position whose location had already been exposed during the first assault. Secondary command sites were prepared so orders could continue moving if one location was destroyed, while messengers were assigned duplicated routes whenever information was important enough that losing one courier could compromise a wider response.

"If a formation message carrying a major troop movement order fails to reach its destination, send a physical messenger immediately," one General instructed.

An officer beside him asked, "Do you want a second messenger sent at the same time in case the first route is intercepted?"

"Yes. Use separate roads. Important orders should never depend on a single formation transmission or a single runner."

Supply organization changed with the command structure. Large stores that had previously supported several nearby sectors were divided into smaller caches so losing one depot would not deprive an entire region of medicinal resources or formation materials. Wounded troops were moved farther from obvious reinforcement roads, and local commanders were given greater authority to withdraw from positions that no longer contributed to the defense rather than waiting for distant approval.

Those changes made the remaining stronghold less efficient than it had been before the first assault, but they also made it harder to cripple with the same sequence of attacks.

Their greatest concern remained Haotian himself.

Reports from surviving officers offered fragments of information about how he had moved through the interior, but none provided enough detail to reconstruct every method he used. The surviving commanders knew he possessed powerful concealment, unusual spatial perception, and the ability to identify weaknesses in formations far more quickly than an ordinary cultivator should. They also knew that once he established a secure location, the Dao Palace of Creation could turn one infiltrator into an army.

A senior commander suggested placing stronger cultivators permanently beside every important formation station.

One General rejected the proposal after considering the manpower it would require. "Haotian did not attack every formation station he passed. He destroyed the ones that interfered with his direction of advance. If we station our strongest cultivators beside every structure, he can bypass most of them and attack the gaps we create elsewhere."

The suggestion was dropped.

Instead, the demons focused their strongest protection around systems whose loss would immediately affect multiple sectors, while allowing less important structures to rely on local defenders. Mobile forces were instructed to preserve themselves if Haotian bypassed them rather than chase him simply because he appeared nearby. The coalition had repeatedly benefited when defenders abandoned useful positions to pursue an enemy that had no intention of fighting them there.

Several days passed as those changes settled into place.

One Demon General spent much of that period examining the same southwestern sectors that had raised concern during the initial planning. The local defenses continued functioning normally, patrols reported no intrusion, and additional formation checks found nothing suggesting Haotian had already entered. The sector commander requested another mobile company anyway.

"The front reserve will remain near six o'clock," the General said.

"If the coalition emerges inside the southwest, our local companies may not hold long enough for that reserve to reach us," the sector commander replied.

"I know. Moving the reserve to your sector now would leave the damaged front dependent on incomplete formations and local troops. If I solve your response time by stripping six o'clock, then the front commander inherits the same problem."

The sector commander looked toward the map. "Then we hold with the forces already assigned here until the attack is confirmed."

"Yes. Preserve the local formations, report immediately if Haotian is detected, and delay the coalition long enough for the mobile forces to turn toward you."

The order remained unchanged.

From the demon commander's perspective, it was the only sustainable choice.

From Haotian's perspective, it was exactly the commitment he had been waiting to confirm.

By the time he returned from his final observation of the eight o'clock sector, the coalition inside the Dao Palace of Creation had recovered enough that the question was no longer whether another assault was possible. The slower legions had restored most of the cultivation spent during the first operation, damaged equipment had either been repaired or replaced, and the healers had reduced the number of cultivators still classified as unavailable. Several fighters would remain behind because their injuries required more time, but Xuanyin no longer needed to preserve entire legions simply because too many of their members were exhausted to function together.

She had already prepared an updated readiness assessment when Haotian entered the command area.

Xuanyin compared his final observation with the coalition's scout reports. The front reserve remained near six o'clock, the central formation still covered the same interior districts, and no major rear force had shifted toward eight. Both sources were now showing the same stable deployment.

"The enemy deployments around six, twelve, and the central districts have remained stable through several observation cycles," Xuanyin said. "Do you still want the coalition's next deployment point inside the eight o'clock sector?"

"Yes. Their smaller adjustments have not changed the reinforcement geometry."

Haotian indicated the interior military area he had selected behind the local defenses. "I will infiltrate alone, pass the exterior surveillance, and open the Dao Palace of Creation here. The coalition begins from inside the flank instead of fighting through the wall."

Xuanyin brought the readiness report onto the map. "The Second Mixed Legion currently has the best combination of restored cultivation, low injury count, and intact equipment. The Sixth Mixed Legion is close behind them. The Fourth has also recovered well, but several of its Veridian cultivators are still under medical observation."

"Have the Second Mixed Legion emerge first and establish the initial defensive depth around the passage," Haotian said. "The Sixth follows immediately and expands the secured area so the later formations have room to enter."

Xuanyin marked both formations. "The legions that carried the forward pressure during the first assault will deploy deeper this time. We can rotate them toward the front later if the fighting lasts long enough to require it."

Haotian agreed.

The new assault would still preserve the mixed nature of the coalition. Every legion would continue carrying cultivators from Blue Sphere, Pyrelith, Veridian Prime, Umbrel Spire, Celestara, and Marephoros rather than separating into planetary armies. What changed was which formations would meet the first resistance and how the army would develop after emerging from the Dao Palace of Creation.

Xuanyin examined the roads surrounding the deployment point. "Once the Second and Sixth Mixed Legions have secured enough space for continuous deployment, what direction do you want the coalition to take?"

"Straight inward through the surviving base," Haotian said. "The opening formations protect the Dao Palace of Creation until enough of the coalition is outside. After that, we advance before the reserves from six and twelve can rotate into useful positions."

There would be no second clockwise sweep.

The first assault had needed the clockwise battle march because the coalition was cutting through a stronghold whose interior command and movement networks still largely functioned. That operation had deliberately broken those relationships. Repeating the same circular movement now would give the demons time to use the surviving sectors Haotian had already forced them to reorganize.

The first mixed legions would therefore secure the area around Haotian, establish the width and depth required for the passage to remain usable, and prevent the local defenders from concentrating directly against the opening. Healers would remain behind the second combat layer, reserves would stay deep enough that they did not interfere with the initial deployment, and only the specialists needed immediately would accompany the early formations.

Umbrel cultivators would watch surrounding troop movement and identify changing approaches. Celestara fighters would secure or contest the elevated positions overlooking the deployment area. Veridian teams would check nearby underground routes before local defenders could use them to appear behind the coalition. Pyrelith specialists would remain with the larger formations until an enemy formation structure actually threatened the advance rather than peeling away merely because another hostile system existed nearby.

Haotian looked toward the family's readiness records.

Lianhua, Yinxue, Yueru, Ziyue, Xiangyin, Shuyue, and Yanfei had all recovered sufficiently for another major engagement. Tianlan's forearm had healed enough that the healer no longer prohibited spear use, although he had been warned not to treat the absence of pain as permission to ignore the injury completely.

All three Frost Rainbow Falcons had recovered.

Haotian chose the same two that had accompanied Tianlan during the first assault and kept the third inside with the reserves. Tianlan already understood how to fight with those two birds beside him, and there was no reason to crowd the initial deployment with all three before the coalition knew how much elevated space it controlled.

Shuyue noticed her assigned position when the family reviewed the plan later.

"You placed me behind the first combat layer instead of beside the forward formations," she said.

"Yes," Haotian answered. "During the last assault, you spread the Dao Palace of Virtues across too many formations for too long. This time I want you far enough back that you can reinforce whichever legion is actually losing stability without spending cultivation on everyone around you."

Shuyue looked at the formation markings again. "So I stay mobile inside the protected depth instead of anchoring the entire front."

"Exactly."

She nodded and left the position unchanged.

The other wives would remain closer to Haotian during the early deployment, but none were assigned separate objectives merely for the sake of dividing them. Their first responsibility was preserving the space necessary for the coalition to emerge. Once the local defenders were pushed away from the deployment point and the army developed enough depth, they could respond to whatever stronger resistance appeared in the direction of advance.

Lianhua studied the distance between the interior deployment point and the nearest local companies. "Once the demons realize the Dao Palace of Creation has opened, how long will those local companies need to reach the deployment area?"

"If their current positions remain unchanged, the Second Mixed Legion should be fully outside before the first organized local company reaches us," Haotian said. "The Sixth should already be emerging by then."

Yinxue pointed toward the formation station northeast of the deployment point. "Does this formation station have enough range to strike the area where the Dao Palace of Creation will open?"

"Part of its attack range overlaps the edge of the deployment area."

"If the demons activate it against the passage, we destroy it before it can keep firing."

"Yes. If they do not use it against us, we do not waste time attacking it merely because it exists."

Yueru traced the road leading from the damaged front toward the southwest. "Is this still the most likely route for the first large reinforcement from six o'clock?"

"Yes. We know the current position of the front reserve and approximately how long it needs to reach eight o'clock. What we cannot know is whether the surviving Generals will send the whole formation, divide it, or hold part of it near the damaged gates."

That was the limit of what observation could provide. Haotian could identify current positions and movement routes, but he could not know every decision the surviving Demon Generals would make once the fighting began. The family did not need certainty beyond that.

The deployment priorities remained simple. Secure the area around the Dao Palace of Creation, prevent the local defenders from compressing the opening, keep the mixed legions together, and allow enough of the coalition to emerge before driving deeper into the stronghold. The second assault would gain its advantage from the direction and timing of the deployment, not from scattering the family across unrelated objectives.

By the time Xuanyin finished arranging the deployment sequence, the opening phase required little further discussion. Haotian would secure the interior position first, the Second and Sixth Mixed Legions would establish enough space for the remainder of the coalition to emerge, and the family and elites would prevent the local defenders from collapsing onto the deployment point before the deeper formations came through.

"When do you want to begin the eight o'clock infiltration?" Xuanyin asked once the deployment order was complete.

"After one more full recovery cycle."

Xuanyin looked at the readiness reports. "Most of the coalition is already capable of fighting now. What are you waiting to recover before you move?"

"The remaining gap between the legions that recovered quickly and the ones that carried more of the first assault," Haotian said. "We have already waited long enough for the demons to settle their deployments. There is no reason to begin the next attack while part of our army is still below the strength it can recover by tomorrow."

Xuanyin agreed.

The army had already regained most of its combat strength, but one more full cycle would allow the slower formations to close more of the difference between themselves and the legions that had recovered fastest. It would also give workshops time to finish several remaining repairs and healers one final opportunity to remove cultivators whose conditions only appeared stable until they circulated at higher intensity.

Xuanyin sent the updated instructions that same day.

The coalition was informed that preparations for the next assault had begun, but no one was ordered into immediate formation. Commanders received the planned deployment sequence privately and reviewed their positions with their officers without exhausting anyone through unnecessary drills. The first two mixed legions practiced only the transition they would need after emerging from the Dao Palace of Creation: clearing enough room around the opening, establishing depth, and leaving space for the formations behind them to continue entering.

There was no need to rehearse the entire battle because no one knew what exact response the demons would produce once the attack began.

Tianlan received his instructions with the two Frost Rainbow Falcons beside him. His forearm had healed enough that the wrapping was gone, leaving only the newer tissue where the wound had repeatedly reopened.

Haotian showed him the new approach on the campaign map. "The next infiltration is through the eight o'clock side. When the Dao Palace of Creation opens, you will deploy with the same two Frost Rainbow Falcons that fought beside you during the first assault. The third stays with the reserve formations until we know whether we need another aerial fighter."

Tianlan studied the southwest sector. "You chose eight o'clock because the demons moved their strongest new defenses toward the front and the original rear infiltration point."

"That is part of it. The larger advantage is that their heavy reserves have to leave those positions and travel laterally before they can reach us."

Tianlan nodded and shifted his grip on the repaired spear.

Haotian watched the movement. "Does the forearm still hurt when you put rotational force through the spear?"

"Only when I turn the shaft hard enough to use the larger rotations."

"Then do not use those rotations casually. Your ordinary thrusts and shorter spear movements are enough unless the fight gives you a reason to put that much torque through the arm."

"I understand."

The two Falcons shifted beside him, both considerably more energetic than they had been after the first assault. The third remained with the reserve groups, rested and available if the battle later required another aerial fighter.

The coalition rested through the final recovery cycle.

Healers completed another round of checks, and cultivators whose meridians still showed dangerous strain were removed from immediate combat status regardless of whether they insisted they could fight. Workshops returned the last repaired equipment considered necessary for the opening deployment, while commanders checked their formations once and then allowed their people to rest rather than keeping them awake through the night before another assault.

Haotian used the same period to restore his own cultivation completely. The injury in his shoulder had healed enough that it no longer restricted movement, and the wounds across his torso had closed without reopening during circulation. His three cores moved smoothly through the Heaven Sundering Trinity Scripture, their synchronization no longer carrying the heavy fatigue left by the first assault.

He did not return outside again that night.

The observation phase was finished, and another trip around the stronghold would provide little that the scouts and his previous examinations had not already established. Six o'clock remained the center of the demons' front reconstruction, twelve o'clock carried the strongest anti-infiltration measures, and the central reserve remained committed to protecting several interior districts. Eight o'clock remained defended but dependent upon local forces until those larger formations could turn toward it.

Shortly before the coalition entered its final rest period, Haotian and Xuanyin stood over the campaign map one last time. The marks around the front and rear had remained stable through several observation cycles, while the side sector had changed only through small local adjustments. The interior military area Haotian had selected remained broad enough to receive the first legions, and none of the larger demonic reserves had moved close enough to remove the timing advantage.

Xuanyin reviewed the final readiness figures. "The Second and Sixth Mixed Legions will be fully rested by the time you begin the infiltration. The remaining combat formations will be ready to deploy behind them, and the healers have already removed the cultivators who should not return to battle."

Haotian looked toward the marked position inside the eight o'clock sector. "Then the coalition is ready."

The front and rear concentrations had remained in place long enough to show that they were no longer temporary responses to the first assault. The surviving Demon Generals had chosen where they believed the next danger was most likely to appear and had distributed their reduced army accordingly. Haotian had spent the recovery period allowing those choices to become clear before deciding how to exploit them.

When he entered the stronghold again, he would not return through the reinforced rear or force the coalition against the rebuilt front. He would approach from the eight o'clock side alone, pass through the local surveillance without alarming the defenders, move beyond the outward-facing fortifications, and reach the interior deployment area he had already selected.

Only after that position was secure would he open the Dao Palace of Creation and bring the coalition back into the stronghold.
