Chapter 561 - Chapter 439

The final recovery cycle ended without ceremony inside the Dao Palace of Creation. There was no need for another speech, another review of the battle plan, or another round of instructions that every commander had already received and repeated to the officers beneath them. The coalition had spent the previous day resting, repairing equipment, checking formations, and removing cultivators whose injuries still made sustained combat unsafe. By the time Haotian left the family's recovery area, the army waiting deeper within Creation no longer resembled the exhausted force that had returned from the first assault.

The Second Mixed Legion stood nearest the location from which the passage would eventually open, although enough distance had been left around the staging point that the first formations would not crowd the spatial boundary when it appeared. Its twelve-person teams had already assembled into their larger combat structure, with cultivators from Blue Sphere, Pyrelith, Veridian Prime, Umbrel Spire, Celestara, and Marephoros occupying the positions they had practiced rather than clustering according to origin. The Sixth Mixed Legion waited behind them with the same discipline, prepared to expand the secured area rather than simply pile more bodies into whatever space the Second managed to claim. Neither legion needed to know what exact street, courtyard, or military ground awaited them outside, because their first task had been reduced to something simpler: emerge, clear the opening, establish depth, and keep enough room behind them for the rest of the coalition to continue deploying.

The later formations extended farther through the prepared staging areas. Healers remained well behind the combat legions where wounded cultivators could be received without interfering with the flow of troops, while reserve groups were separated enough that commanders could call them forward individually instead of dragging the entire rear structure toward the passage at once. Umbrel observers had already joined the formations expected to move first, Celestara cultivators responsible for nearby elevated positions waited where they could emerge without forcing their way through the infantry, and Veridian specialists prepared equipment suited for inspecting underground routes. Pyrelith fighters remained inside the combat formations rather than standing apart as demolition teams searching for something to destroy before the battle even began.

Haotian moved along the front of the waiting army without slowing enough to turn the moment into an inspection. The formations had already been inspected by their own commanders, then checked again after the final recovery reports, and there was no reason for him to repeat work simply because he was about to leave first. What mattered now was whether they were ready to act when the Dao Palace of Creation opened rather than how they looked while waiting inside it. The Second Mixed Legion remained quiet, weapons secured but accessible, and the Sixth held the same controlled readiness behind them.

Xuanyin stood near the command position rather than beside Haotian. The campaign map remained open in front of her with the eight o'clock sector marked according to his final observation, while communication officers waited nearby for the moment the coalition began moving through the passage. Her physical condition no longer required assistance, but the damaged Dao Palace within her still made it more useful for her to preserve cultivation and command the deployment than to follow Haotian into the first exchange. Once enough of the coalition occupied the interior deployment area, she could move command forward without exposing herself unnecessarily during the most uncertain stage.

"The Second and Sixth Mixed Legions are in position," Xuanyin said when Haotian approached. "The formations behind them know the deployment order, and the healers have removed everyone who should not return to combat."

Haotian looked once toward the waiting legions. "Keep them inside until I open the Dao Palace of Creation from the selected deployment area."

Xuanyin nodded. No additional conditions needed to be repeated. If the interior ground no longer matched what Haotian had observed, the passage would not open there, and the coalition would remain inside until he returned or selected another location.

The family waited farther from the staging point so their presence would not distort the order of the first legions. Lianhua had recovered enough that the spatial strain caused by the previous assault no longer interfered with normal circulation, while Yinxue's sword arm had regained its steadiness. Yueru, Ziyue, Xiangyin, Yanfei, and Shuyue were all ready to fight, though Shuyue's assigned position remained deeper than it had during the first assault so that the Dao Palace of Virtues would not be spread across the entire forward line again.

Tianlan stood with the same two Frost Rainbow Falcons that had accompanied him before. His forearm had healed enough for ordinary spear use, but the healer's warning about larger rotations had not been forgotten, and the grip he maintained on the repaired spear remained relaxed rather than constantly testing the recovering tissue. The third Falcon waited with the reserve formations as planned, fully recovered but unnecessary for the opening deployment. Haotian did not need to remind Tianlan of any of it.

Liora remained with the Veridian healers. Her position placed her close enough to move forward after the first layers established themselves but far enough back that the opening exchange could not suddenly turn the healing formation into part of the frontline. The rest of the coalition showed the same restraint. Everyone who wanted to be closer to the coming battle had already been assigned according to function rather than impatience.

Haotian stopped near the place where the passage would eventually connect and closed his eyes briefly. His three cores moved through the Heaven Sundering Trinity Scripture without the tightness that had remained after the first assault, and the synchronized circulation passed through the restored pathways without dragging against old strain. The shoulder that had repeatedly stiffened during the previous battle rotated without restriction, while the wounds across his torso remained closed beneath his robe. Nothing in his body required another delay.

He opened his eyes and allowed the Dao Palace of Creation to remain sealed behind him.

The passage he created carried only himself.

Space folded with far less demand than the enormous opening that had once allowed entire legions to flood into the stronghold. Haotian stepped through the controlled connection and emerged outside Blue Sphere's Abyss stronghold far from the broken front gates, with the eight o'clock side rising ahead of him beneath the darkened sky. The passage closed immediately behind him, removing the only direct sign that anyone had entered or left.

The stronghold had not changed enough to surprise him.

That was the first thing Haotian confirmed before beginning the approach. The outer wall remained intact along this section, towers occupied the same general positions, and the formations he had studied during repeated observations still carried their energy through the same buried relationships beneath the stone. Patrol numbers had changed slightly since his last visit, but not in a way that altered the structure of the defense. The local commanders had strengthened what they could without receiving one of the heavy reserves positioned elsewhere.

Haotian did not move immediately toward the wall. He allowed the Dao of the Universe to spread through the surrounding area first, not with the broad force he would use in open combat but with enough precision to reconstruct the relationships he had already memorized. Patrols crossed the outer approaches according to the altered timing he had seen during the final observation cycle, while formation coverage remained strongest along the obvious approaches between towers. The narrow region between two neighboring detection systems still depended more heavily upon direct observation than continuous formation overlap.

Nothing about the opening had become accidental.

Veil Shroud — Empty Silhouette settled around him without changing the environment or bending light in some obvious display. His presence simply became less useful to the senses meant to notice it, the shape of his body ceasing to stand out against the background in the way ordinary movement would. The technique did not make him nonexistent, nor did Haotian treat it as a substitute for understanding where the enemy was looking. Concealment worked because he used it together with the patrol geometry already known to him.

The first group passed beneath one of the towers without altering pace. Their attention remained on the approaches beyond the wall and the wider terrain outside the stronghold, exactly where disciplined guards should have been looking after an enemy army had already proven capable of attacking the fortress. Haotian waited until their movement carried them far enough that the next observation line had not yet replaced them. The opening was not dramatic and did not last only one desperate heartbeat. It was a predictable interval created by the way two patrol routes had been assigned.

Silent Flow — Soundless Crossing removed the remaining evidence of his steps as he entered that interval.

Haotian crossed the exposed ground without accelerating enough to disturb the concealment around him. His feet touched stone, earth, and broken surface material without producing the small shifts or sounds that ordinary movement would create, while the Dao of the Universe continued following every nearby observer. One patrol remained beyond the tower to his right, another farther left, and neither turned toward him because nothing in their assigned search pattern required them to do so. The detection formation ahead remained exactly where he expected.

He did not pass through it.

Space perception traced the outer edge of the formation and the weaker relationship between its coverage and the neighboring node. The gap itself would have been useless to a formation of soldiers and difficult for an ordinary infiltrator who could not sense where the detection field actually ended. Haotian required neither guesswork nor room for an army. He adjusted his route by several steps, crossed between the active relationships, and continued toward the wall without allowing his cultivation to touch either system.

The local defenses remained undisturbed.

Haotian reached the base of the outer structure and moved along it briefly rather than ascending at the first available point. A tower farther ahead carried a stronger observer than the others, and although that cultivator's attention remained outward, crossing directly beneath him would add unnecessary exposure without creating any advantage. Haotian continued until the wall geometry and formation coverage matched the section selected during his earlier observations. Only then did he begin moving upward.

Cloud-Sundering Steps carried him across the vertical structure through changes of angle that would have been awkward for ordinary footwork but required no dramatic leap from him. He used protrusions, structural joints, and narrow changes in the stone where they helped, while controlled Space perception ensured that none of his movements crossed through active formation lines buried inside the wall. The stronghold had not been designed with the expectation that someone who could read its defensive relationships this precisely would climb directly between them. Haotian had no reason to announce that failure by touching anything he did not need to touch.

He reached the upper structure between patrol rotations and crossed it without killing anyone.

That mattered.

A dead guard, a broken formation node, or a missing patrol would create information. Information would produce investigation, and investigation could eventually turn the eight o'clock sector toward the very thing Haotian wanted to avoid until the coalition was already outside the Dao Palace of Creation. The purpose of infiltration was not to prove he could eliminate sentries silently. It was to ensure the defenders did not know an infiltration had occurred at all.

The inner side of the wall carried more activity than the exterior, but it was activity Haotian had already accounted for. Local soldiers moved between barracks, towers, and military structures according to routines established after the first assault, while several officers supervised repairs to lesser formations damaged during earlier redeployments. None of those groups remained stationary around the section Haotian had chosen. The heavy formations that could have made the interior dangerous were still elsewhere.

He descended beyond the outward-facing defenses and continued deeper.

The wall vanished behind military buildings after several turns, removing the last reason to think of the operation as a breach. Haotian was now moving through the side sector itself, where the defensive organization changed from perimeter surveillance to local military function. Roads connected barracks, formation stations, storage structures, and intersections leading toward the interior. The local companies stationed there remained capable soldiers, but they were distributed according to the expectation that trouble would arrive from outside or be reported before reaching this far.

Haotian passed behind one company as it moved toward a training yard.

The soldiers marched in controlled formation and did not waste attention staring into every doorway or side street they crossed. Their discipline made them easier to predict, not easier to fool through stupidity. Haotian allowed them to clear the intersection, then crossed behind the final rank while Veil Shroud suppressed the cues that might otherwise draw an instinctive glance. The entire company continued toward its destination without slowing.

Another road farther inside had changed since his last observation.

Haotian stopped before entering it and extended his perception through the surrounding buildings. A local company that had previously occupied a military structure two streets farther north had been moved closer to the prospective deployment area. The shift shortened one of the local response routes enough that opening the Dao Palace of Creation at the exact point chosen earlier would give the defenders slightly less time before reaching the first emerging legion.

The change did not invalidate the plan.

Haotian studied the military area again rather than stubbornly treating his previous choice as sacred. The broad ground remained available, the nearest formation station still occupied the same position northeast of it, and the roads leading toward six o'clock, the central districts, and the damaged rear routes had not changed. Only the local company had moved.

He adjusted the deployment point farther across the open military area.

The new position preserved the same overall access to the surrounding roads while placing another structure and a wider section of ground between the Dao Palace of Creation and the relocated company. The difference would not prevent the demons from responding once the coalition appeared, but it would force them to travel around the structure or split through two approaches instead of reaching the passage along one direct line. The Second Mixed Legion needed only enough additional time to establish the first defensive depth.

Haotian continued.

The active formation station northeast of the area remained operational. Its inscriptions carried energy through several buried channels, and the structure could reach part of the ground Haotian intended to use if the demons redirected its attack inward. He did not touch it. Yinxue and the others already understood that the system mattered only if the defenders used it against the deployment, and destroying it before opening the Dao Palace of Creation would accomplish nothing except warn the entire sector that an enemy had reached their interior.

An elevated platform overlooking one side of the military area contained several aerial threats among the demonic defenders, but the number remained within what the coalition had planned for. The structure would become one of the first positions the coalition's Celestara cultivators contested after emerging. Haotian marked its current occupants within his perception and moved on without disturbing them.

The underground routes required a longer examination.

Veridian scouts had never entered this sector deeply enough to inspect them from within, so Haotian relied on Space and Universe perception to follow the voids beneath the paving. One passage connected toward local storage structures, another extended toward the central roads, and a smaller service route curved beneath the edge of the deployment area before turning away. None carried a major force at present. The Veridian specialists could secure or collapse whichever routes became dangerous after deployment.

Haotian crossed the final street and entered the broad military ground selected for the coalition.

It was not empty.

Several small groups moved along its edges, equipment remained stacked beside one building, and a handful of demonic soldiers crossed between structures without any reason to believe they were standing within the future center of an enemy deployment. Haotian did not need the area to be abandoned. He needed enough open space that those local occupants could be removed after the passage opened without preventing the Second Mixed Legion from emerging.

He moved through the ground slowly enough to verify every important relationship one last time.

The nearest local company remained where he had just observed it. The formation station northeast of the area had not changed function. The elevated defenders remained in place. Underground movement was limited. Most importantly, the heavy front reserve still occupied the region toward six o'clock, the central formation still covered its deeper intersection, and the reinforced rear forces remained too far from eight o'clock to influence the opening deployment without first relocating.

The larger geometry had held.

Haotian selected the precise point where the Dao Palace of Creation would open.

He did not choose the absolute center of the military area. The relocated local company made that position less useful than it had been during the previous observation cycle, and the formation station's range reached too much of the eastern edge. Instead, Haotian moved the intended passage closer to a cluster of low military structures that would shield one side of the initial formation without trapping the Second Mixed Legion against them. The broad ground ahead remained open enough for the legion to establish width, while the Sixth could expand toward the opposite side after emerging.

From there, the coalition could control the nearest intersections before the local demons understood the scale of what had happened.

Haotian remained still for several breaths and allowed the Dao of the Universe to widen farther than before.

Nothing moved toward him.

No patrol had changed direction because of something he had done. No formation had activated unexpectedly. No commander had received a report of an intrusion. The local sector continued functioning according to the defensive priorities established by the surviving Demon Generals, unaware that the person responsible for the first assault was already standing beyond the defenses they had left facing outward.

Only then did Haotian turn his attention inward toward the Dao Palace of Creation.

He felt the waiting army through the connection that belonged to him even though no passage yet existed between the two spaces. The Second Mixed Legion remained at the head of the deployment order, the Sixth waited behind it, and the family, specialists, healers, reserves, and later combat formations remained arranged exactly as they had been when he left. Xuanyin had kept everyone inside.

Haotian did not open the passage yet.

Before doing that, he moved once more around the immediate deployment ground, confirming the physical space from the perspective of the soldiers who would emerge rather than from the perspective of an infiltrator crossing it alone. He measured where the first teams could move without colliding with the surrounding buildings, where the Second Legion's outer formations would need to turn, and how much room the Sixth would have when it began expanding the secured area. The coalition had practiced the transition inside Creation, but Haotian still needed to make sure the actual ground would support it.

It would.

The nearest road toward the interior remained wide enough for a full mixed formation. The side road toward the damaged front could support the demon reserve when it eventually arrived, but also gave the coalition a clear direction from which to watch for that approach. The third route toward the rear was narrower and partially obstructed farther away by damage from the first assault, making it less useful for rapid demonic reinforcement. The location forced every serious enemy response to reveal where it was coming from before reaching the passage.

Haotian returned to the point he had chosen.

His infiltration had taken him through the perimeter, beyond the outward-facing defensive network, past the local patrols, and into the interior military area without giving the demons a single reason to believe anything had changed. The stronghold remained alert. Its defenders remained competent. None of that mattered when their attention was distributed according to threats that had not yet begun.

Haotian placed one hand before him and began opening the Dao Palace of Creation.

Space did not rupture violently across the military ground. The connection formed under deliberate control, narrow at first while Haotian stabilized the relationship between the stronghold and the inner world. The Dao Palace of the Universe guided the spatial boundary while Creation answered from within, allowing the opening to widen only as fast as Haotian intended.

On the other side, the Second Mixed Legion was already waiting.

The spatial opening widened under Haotian's control until the first ranks of the Second Mixed Legion could see the military ground beyond it. No one moved prematurely. The cultivators nearest the passage waited until the boundary stabilized and the commander at the head of the formation received the signal that the connection could safely carry them, then the first twelve-person teams crossed together rather than spilling out one fighter at a time. Their feet touched enemy ground already arranged for movement, weapons coming free only as they cleared the opening.
