Chapter 19 - The Flame That Betrays

"Desire burns deeper than blood. And sometimes, it burns through fate itself."

---

Three nights after the battle.

The pack was rebuilding—scavenging steel, carving new weapons, binding wounds with thread and teeth. The rogues had begun calling themselves something different now:

The Moonborn.

A name whispered by the ones who followed Selene blindly. A name carried in howls. A name feared by their enemies.

But Selene didn't feel like a queen.

Not anymore.

Not when the dreams returned.

Not when the symbols burned themselves into her skin.

Not when every night, she saw that golden throne and heard a voice whisper:

> "The goddess wakes, and you are her vessel."

---

Selene trained before sunrise—sweat-soaked, blades whirling, fury dancing in every breath.

Kai approached, his side wrapped in cloth, his voice soft.

"You haven't slept."

She didn't stop striking.

"I don't need to."

"You do," he said, stepping in. "Even gods bleed when they forget they're still mortal."

Selene paused, panting, her eyes flashing.

"I'm not mortal, Kai. Not anymore."

---

Later, as the camp settled…

The first outsider arrived.

She was a vision—flame-red hair braided with gold, armor lined with viper scales, eyes bright like wildfire. She rode a midnight-black steed and dismounted with the elegance of a queen.

"Selene," she said, without bowing. "I'm Nyra of the Crimson Order. The High Huntress of the Eastern Fangs."

Kai stepped forward, suspicious. "That's impossible. The Crimson Order was wiped out a decade ago."

Nyra smirked. "We don't die. We vanish."

Selene met her gaze. "Why are you here?"

"To join you," Nyra said. "To fight beside the Moonborn. And to collect something promised to my bloodline."

Selene frowned. "Which is?"

Nyra's eyes slid to Kai. "Him."

---

Tension cracked the air.

Kai blinked. "I've never seen you before."

"Oh, you have," Nyra said. "When you were a boy. Your father made a pact with mine. A blood-oath. When the time came, you would belong to the Crimson House."

Selene growled. "He's not an object."

Nyra's gaze was sharp. "But he's not yours either."

Before Selene could respond, the sky above them cracked.

A streak of burning silver shot through the clouds.

The moons pulsed red.

And every wolf in the camp dropped to their knees, claws over ears, howling in agony.

Selene stood.

And from her skin, the blood-mark flared.

Not red.

Not black.

Gold.

Ancient.

Forgotten.

---

That night, Riven found an old scroll buried beneath the Raven ruin.

She brought it to Selene.

"This was hidden beneath Cael's war altar. Protected by black seals. I had to cut my palm just to unlock it."

Selene unrolled it.

Her hands trembled.

It was a family tree.

No.

It was her family tree.

But it didn't end with her parents.

It went further.

Much further.

To a name scratched in celestial script.

LUNARI.

Riven whispered, "It's the Moon Queen. The First Howler. The goddess who built the blood packs."

And beneath Lunari's name:

> ✦ Daughter: Selene.

> ✦ Born of the Void Eclipse. Last Flame of the Silver Blood.

Selene staggered back.

"That's not possible."

"It's why you can do what no wolf can," Riven said. "Why you command wolves who don't even know you. Why your voice breaks spells and your rage awakens ruins."

"You're not just a queen, Selene…"

> "You're a god's heir."

---

Miles away, in a forgotten crypt beneath the Obsidian Peaks...

A massive hand broke free from ancient stone.

Eyes the size of a man's head blinked open in darkness.

Chains cracked.

And a voice, deep as time, growled:

> "The Blood Flame rises."

> "Then the old gods must return."

---

Back at camp, Kai paced, torn.

Selene stood by the fire, the scroll clutched in her hands.

"You're scared of me now," she said softly.

"I'm scared for you."

"You think I'll become something monstrous?"

"I think… you'll become something I can't reach."

She turned.

Eyes fierce.

"But you reached me before I knew who I was."

Nyra stepped in.

"I can reach her too."

Selene growled. "Enough."

Kai turned to Nyra. "If you came for my heart, you're too late."

Nyra smirked, stepping closer to him. "Then I'll aim lower."

Selene's magic flared.

Nyra laughed. "Jealousy suits you."

---

Later that night…

Selene sat alone atop the ridge, staring at her hands.

They trembled.

Not from fear.

From power.

Too much of it.

And deep inside, she heard the voice again.

Lunari's voice.

> "The gods did not leave, child. They were caged. And your blood is the key."

> "Open the gate."

> "Become what they fear."
