Chapter 148 - After the rain

They didn't run.

Even when the rain got heavier—when it stopped being "almost" and became something real—neither of them moved right away.

Velithra stood there, closer than before, her hand still lightly gripping the edge of Kai's sleeve.

Kai let out a quiet breath, almost a laugh.

"We're really just standing here."

She smiled softly. "I think we forgot to leave."

But neither of them stepped back.

The rain fell steadily now, soft but constant.

It soaked into their clothes, dampened their hair, blurred the edges of everything around them.

But somehow—

it didn't feel uncomfortable.

It felt… still.

Like the world had quieted just for them.

Kai reached up, brushing a strand of wet hair away from Velithra's face.

This time, he didn't hesitate.

Not even a little.

His hand lingered slightly longer than before.

Velithra didn't look away.

Her eyes stayed on his, steady and calm.

"Does this change things?" he asked quietly.

The question wasn't rushed.

It wasn't afraid.

Just honest.

Velithra thought about it.

About the list.

About the time they had left.

About everything that had been building up to this moment.

Then she shook her head gently.

"It doesn't change things," she said.

"It just makes them clearer."

Kai let that settle.

Clearer.

Yeah.

That was exactly it.

There was no confusion anymore.

No pretending they were just passing time.

No acting like this was something temporary and light.

This—

whatever they had—

was real.

And they both knew it now.

He smiled slightly.

Not wide.

Not dramatic.

Just something soft and certain.

"I think I like clear," he said.

Velithra smiled back.

"I do too."

The rain started to ease.

Not stopping—

just softening.

Like the moment itself was slowly settling down.

Kai glanced up at the sky, then back at her.

"We should probably head back."

Velithra nodded.

"Probably."

But neither of them moved right away.

Instead, Kai reached for her hand.

Not instinct this time.

Not accidental.

Intentional.

Velithra intertwined her fingers with his without hesitation.

"Okay," he said quietly.

"Okay," she echoed.

They started walking.

Slowly.

Side by side.

Hands still together.

The ground was damp beneath their steps.

The air cooler now.

Everything smelled fresh—like something had just been reset.

Kai glanced over at her.

"You know…"

"What?"

"That was better than anything on the list."

Velithra tilted her head slightly.

"Even the sunrise?"

He thought about it.

Then nodded.

"Yeah."

She smiled faintly.

"Then maybe the list isn't the most important part."

Kai squeezed her hand gently.

"I don't think it ever was."

They walked the rest of the way without rushing.

No need to fill the silence.

No need to define anything.

Because for once—

nothing felt uncertain.

As they reached her street, Kai slowed slightly.

Not stopping.

Just… taking it in.

Velithra noticed.

"You're thinking again."

"Yeah."

"Good thinking or bad thinking?"

He looked at her.

"Just… real thinking."

She stepped a little closer.

"Then don't overdo it."

He laughed softly.

"I'll try."

At her gate, they stopped.

Same place as always.

But it didn't feel the same.

It felt… more.

Velithra looked down briefly, then back up at him.

"See you tomorrow?"

Kai smiled.

"Yeah."

Then, after a second—

"Definitely."

This time, when she turned to go inside—

he didn't feel like something was unfinished.

He didn't feel like he had missed a moment.

Because for once—

they hadn't waited.

They hadn't hesitated.

They had just…

been there.

And somehow—

that made everything feel a little more certain.

Even with June getting closer.

Even with time still moving forward.

Because now—

they both knew exactly what this was.

And that made all the difference.
