Chapter 149 - Unsaid, but understood

Nothing official changed.

No conversation.

No moment where they stopped and defined it.

But everything felt different anyway.

Kai noticed it first.

Not in a big way.

Just in the small things.

The way Velithra stood a little closer when they walked.

The way her hand found his without hesitation.

The way silence didn't feel like something to fill anymore.

At school, everything looked the same.

Same classrooms.

Same noise.

Same routine.

But for them—

it wasn't.

They sat together like always.

But now, their shoulders brushed without either of them pulling away.

Kai rested his arm along the back of her chair.

Velithra didn't react.

Didn't question it.

Just leaned slightly into it.

"You're smiling," Kai said quietly.

She glanced at him. "Am I?"

"Yeah."

"Maybe you're just making me."

He smirked. "I'll take credit."

Nothing about it felt forced.

That was the part that surprised him the most.

There was no awkward phase.

No confusion.

Just a quiet understanding.

Later, they walked home together.

Same route.

Same pace.

But now their hands were already intertwined before either of them noticed.

Velithra looked down briefly.

Then smiled.

"You didn't even ask this time."

Kai shrugged.

"I didn't think I needed to."

She squeezed his hand lightly.

"You didn't."

They stopped by the field for a while.

Not because they planned to.

Just because they always did.

Kai lay back on the grass.

Velithra sat beside him, knees pulled in slightly.

"You ever think about how weird this is?" he asked.

She raised an eyebrow. "What part?"

"That nothing officially changed… but everything did."

Velithra thought about it.

Then nodded.

"Yeah."

He turned his head to look at her.

"But it doesn't feel confusing."

"No," she said.

"It doesn't."

That was the difference.

There were no questions they needed to ask.

No pressure to define what they were.

Because they both already knew.

Velithra lay back beside him this time.

Closer than before.

Their shoulders touching.

The sky stretched above them, clear and calm.

"You know what I like about this?" Kai said.

"What?"

"That it's simple."

Velithra turned her head slightly toward him.

"It doesn't feel simple."

He smiled faintly.

"No, I mean… it feels right."

She didn't respond right away.

But she shifted just slightly closer.

That was her answer.

A breeze moved softly across the field.

Everything felt steady.

Grounded.

Like they weren't chasing something anymore.

They were just… in it.

After a while, Velithra spoke.

"We never said it."

Kai looked at her.

"Said what?"

She hesitated for half a second.

Then—

"This."

Kai understood immediately.

He could've said it.

He could've put words to it.

But something about that moment told him—

they didn't need to.

"Do we have to?" he asked quietly.

Velithra shook her head.

"No."

Another pause.

Then she added, softer—

"I think I already know."

Kai smiled.

"Yeah."

"So do I."

They stayed there until the sky began to shift toward evening.

Not talking much.

Not needing to.

Because some things—

the important things—

didn't need to be said out loud.

They were already understood.
