A week slipped by, marking two and a half months since Matias first set foot on Isla Sorna. In that time, the once-isolated predator had grown used to the company of not just Ace, but also Speckles—the newest member of their unlikely little pack.
Matias had spent those days guiding Speckles, showing him how to stalk, how to strike, and when to hold back. He wanted the young Tarbosaurus to learn how to survive on his own, to grow strong enough to stand without relying on others.
He could still recall the small, clumsy moments between the two juveniles. Ace was rather headstrong and would puff himself up and strut about, only to trip over a root and land snout-first in the dirt.
Speckles would let out a croaky, awkward laugh, only to tumble over seconds later when Ace shoved him playfully in retaliation. Their mock growls and exaggerated glares never lasted long; more often than not, it ended with them sharing the last scraps of a meal or curling up beside one another at night.
The memory rumbled warmly in Matias' chest. For the first time since his arrival, the island didn't feel quite so empty.
At this time, he was searching for something. Despite his towering size and strength, the choking density of the jungle made a full exploration nearly impossible. For weeks he had scoured the terrain, always with one goal in mind—to track down the Spinosaurus and end his mission—but the beast remained elusive, hidden somewhere in the tangled wilds.
His sonar pulses and thermal vision served him well, yet their range was limited. They could not pierce the vast canopy or sweep the island's expanse in a single stroke. To truly hunt, he needed the sky. From above, he could scan with both sight and sound, mapping the land far faster than on foot.
That was why his eyes now turned upward. If he could find and devour a Pteranodon, claim its wings as his own, then the skies themselves would open to him.
Matias moved low to the ground in his quadrupedal form, his bulk flowing with a primal, beastlike grace. On all fours, he seemed less like a towering predator and more like a living shadow—something ancient, feral, and terrifying.
At last, he found what he sought: a jagged cliffside where the cries of Pteranodons echoed, their nests perched dangerously along the rock face. His eyes narrowed, and he began to stalk closer, every movement deliberate.
Despite his immense size, Matias became a phantom. His skin rippled and shifted, melting into the stone and foliage as his camouflage erased him from sight.
His body scent faded into nothing, his temperature lowered until even heat-sensing eyes would find only empty air. Each massive step landed in silence, the padded flesh beneath his feet swallowing the sound.
His eyes locked on his prey. The Pteranodons wheeled above the cliffside, their leathery wings stretched wide as they shrieked over the sea breeze.
Long, needle-filled beaks snapped at one another in petty squabbles, their talons curling against the stone as they shifted restlessly in their nests. To most creatures, they were sharp and swift predators of the sky—yet to Matias, they were nothing more than meat.
When the perfect moment came, he lunged.
Exploding from his camouflage, Matias surged up the cliff with terrifying speed. A Pteranodon screeched in alarm, wings flaring in a desperate attempt to take flight—but his jaws snapped shut around its body, crushing bone and silencing it in an instant. Blood misted in the air as he shook the carcass once before swallowing it whole.
The flock erupted in chaos. Dozens launched skyward, their wings slapping against each other in panic, but Matias was relentless. He leapt, his spiked tail smashing through stone and startling the creatures off balance. With predatory precision, he snapped another from the air, dragging it down before it could climb too high. His claws tore through a third, pinning it to the rock as he bit through its neck.
Their speed and flight meant little. Against him, there was no real struggle—only slaughter. One by one they fell, plucked from the sky or torn from their nests, until Matias had consumed enough, his body stirring with the surge of fresh genetic power.
Matias's body convulsed as new limbs tore their way into existence, stretching outward with a grotesque, fluid grace. Thin, sinewy arms unfolded from his sides, each tipped with cruel black claws that flexed hungrily at the air. From them spread vast membranes—dark, leathery sheets that shimmered faintly in the light, stretched taut like the wings of a primeval beast. Unlike the Pteranodon's fragile design, these wings carried the presence of a predator born for both flight and slaughter.
His frame shifted with the change, shedding its bulk. Muscle reformed, bones realigned, and his shape grew leaner, more refined—less a hulking juggernaut and more the silhouette of a true four-limbed dragon. Every breath hissed with raw power, his new wings twitching as if eager to test the skies.
Then it came—the roar. A thunderous, bone-rattling cry ripped from his throat, echoing across jungle, river, and cliff. It was not merely a call but a proclamation of dominance, one that shook leaves from trees and sent flocks of birds fleeing in terror. Every creature on Isla Sorna heard it. Ace froze mid-play, wide-eyed, while the young Tarbosaurus beside him lowered its head in instinctive fear.
Ace and Speckles exchanged a glance, their eyes gleaming with mischief. A pair of guttural growls rumbled from their throats—more playful than threatening—before the two young predators pounced back into their game, snapping at each other with mock ferocity.
Far from their carefree antics, deep within the tangled canopy, something else moved. Small, quick, and utterly out of place among the primeval giants of the island.
It wasn't a dinosaur. It was human.
A girl, no older than thirteen, darted through the undergrowth, her breaths sharp and uneven as branches whipped against her arms. Strands of fiery red hair clung to her sweat-streaked face, her green eyes wide with fear.
Though young, she carried a striking presence—a fair complexion and a body maturing faster than her peers, now driven only by instinct and terror.
She froze at the distant, earth-shaking roar that rolled through the jungle. Her hands trembled as her mind scrambled for answers.
'What kind of monster could make a sound like that?'
For a heartbeat, she considered turning back, but survival pushed her forward. She pressed on, weaving through roots and ferns, desperate to find shelter before the unseen titan found her first.
Back with Matias, his transformation reached its peak. The new limbs twitched and stretched with alien strength, the membranes between them taut and glistening. With his evolution complete, he focused his accumulated genetic traits, investing them into raw flight speed and sharper aerial control.
Matias unfurled his colossal wings. The membranes rippled like living sails as he gave a single, thunderous flap. A shockwave of wind ripped through the forest below, bending trees and scattering leaves like frightened birds. The ground seemed to shiver beneath his power as he launched upward.
The air grew colder as he climbed, but the roaring currents that battered his body only thrilled him. His muscles coiled and released with each beat of his wings, carrying him higher and higher until the canopy was a blur far below. Soon he pierced the cloudline, his massive frame emerging into the endless sky.
There, Matias paused, his wings catching the air as he hovered. The world stretched out before him—endless blue above, rolling clouds beneath, the golden sun washing his scales in fire.
For a moment, the predator stilled. Awe filled his chest.
He let out a resonant roar that echoed across the heavens before diving again, slicing back through the clouds with lethal grace. The thrill of flight surged through him, and with a predator's grin carved across his muzzle, Matias began to scour the island from the skies.
Matias spread his sonar detection and thermal senses across the land, casting an invisible net that mapped the island in startling clarity. Landmarks etched themselves into his mind—valleys, cliffs, rivers, and the dark arteries of jungle that had once hindered him. Now, from the sky, the island unfolded like a living blueprint.
He placed mental markers as he swept over Isla Sorna, committing its layout to memory. The task was far easier than before; he no longer had to waste time navigating jagged cliffs or winding around mountains just to reach the other side. Obstacles that had once slowed him were now meaningless.
This was why his mission had taken so long—many of his targets lurked deep within regions he could not easily reach. Swimming across the coastline might have carried him over, but on an island of this scale, it was little to take him a lot longer.
At last, Matias spotted his quarry. Looming near the riverbank was the Spinosaurus, the monstrous sail-backed predator, its crocodilian snout snapping at the water as it searched for prey. Its jagged teeth glistened, and its ridged sail cut a dark silhouette against the jungle, a nightmare brought to life.
Matias wasted no time. With a thunderous beat of his wings, he plummeted from the sky like a living spear. The Spinosaurus barely had a chance to look up before his massive weight crashed down on it, driving it into the earth with a bone-shaking impact.
The beast thrashed, bellowing in rage, claws raking the soil—but Matias' talons pinned it mercilessly. There was no struggle, no drawn-out fight. His jaws darted forward, clamping around its thick neck, and with a brutal snap, the sound of shattering bone silenced the Spinosaurus forever.
The great predator's body went limp, and at that very instant, a notification echoed in Matias' mind—his mission was complete.
