Chapter 11 - CHAPTER ELEVEN: THE FIRST STEP BACK

The silence had stretched long enough. Days of second-guessing, replaying Mariam's warnings, clinging to Zara's encouragement. But as Layla sat at her desk that morning, staring at her phone for the hundredth time, she realized something—if she wanted clarity, she had to stop waiting for it to fall into her lap.

She opened their chat. The last message was still his: "Long. Hope yours was good too." Cold. Distant. Yet beneath it, she sensed restraint, not disinterest.

Her fingers hovered, trembling slightly, then she typed:

> Layla: Hey stranger. Been a while since we talked properly. How's your morning?

The message hung there like a risk, but she hit send before she could change her mind.

Minutes passed. Ten. Fifteen. Her heart began to sink—until the screen lit up.

> Liam: Layla.

Just her name, but she could almost hear the way he'd say it—warm, low, like it carried weight. Then another message followed quickly:

> Liam: I was beginning to think you'd forgotten me.

Her lips curved in spite of herself.

> Layla: I could never. I just needed a little space to think.

> Liam: And that's exactly why I gave it to you.

She froze, staring at his words. Zara had been right. He hadn't vanished; he'd been waiting.

> Layla: You're… different, Liam.

> Liam: Different how?

> Layla: Different in a way that scares me.

There was a long pause, then his reply came:

> Liam: Good. Because the best things in life are supposed to scare you a little.

Her chest tightened. The silence between them was breaking—not with noise, but with understanding. And this time, she wasn't running from it.

> Liam: So, tell me… what's been keeping you so busy? Besides ignoring me, of course.

Layla chuckled, shaking her head at his teasing.

> Layla: Work. Reports, deadlines, endless meetings. I think my laptop hates me at this point.

> Liam: Poor laptop. Imagine being stuck with you all day and not even getting a coffee break.

> Layla: Excuse you? 😂

> Liam: Relax, I mean the laptop's lucky. It gets all your attention while I had to sit here in silence.

Her smile softened. She could feel the faint sting of his words, but also the playfulness woven into them.

> Layla: You make it sound like I vanished forever.

> Liam: To me, three days without you is forever.

Layla paused, her heart fluttering. His words were too smooth, yet too sincere.

> Layla: And how's your world? Meetings? Work? The mysterious "busy life" you never fully explain?

> Liam: Exhausting as always. But it's strange—everything feels a little lighter when I see your name pop up on my screen.

Her cheeks warmed. She typed quickly before overthinking:

> Layla: You really missed me, didn't you?

> Liam: Like crazy. I wanted to text, to call, but I remembered your warning. I didn't want to scare you away.

Layla exhaled slowly, her chest tightening with both guilt and relief.

> Layla: You didn't scare me, Liam. You made me think. And maybe I needed that.

For a while, neither of them typed, the silence in the chat strangely comforting this time. Then Liam sent one more line:

> Liam: Promise me something?

> Layla: What's that?

> Liam: Next time you need space, just say it. Don't disappear on me. I'd wait forever if I had to… but don't leave me guessing.

Layla stared at the words until her eyes blurred. Something in her heart softened completely.

For the first time, the silence didn't feel like distance. It felt like safety.

Hours later, Layla was curled up in bed, the glow of her phone screen still lighting the room. She had promised herself an early night, but Liam wasn't making that easy.

> Liam: Still awake?

> Layla: Obviously. You keep stealing my sleep.

> Liam: Good. Means I'm doing something right. 😉

Layla rolled her eyes, but she couldn't wipe the smile off her face.

> Layla: You're impossible.

> Liam: And you're predictable. I knew you'd say that.

> Layla: Predictable? Please. You're the one who plans midnight hot chocolate in a park.

> Liam: Touché. But admit it—you loved every second.

She hesitated before replying.

> Layla: I did.

The confession hung between them in digital silence, bolder than anything she'd said in days. Liam didn't waste time.

> Liam: That's the kind of thing I like to hear before I sleep.

> Layla: Go to bed then. It's late.

> Liam: Ladies first.

> Layla: Why do you always do that?

> Liam: Because I like knowing you're safe, asleep, and dreaming sweet before I close my eyes. Makes me rest easier.

Her breath caught. The simplicity of it, the care in it—it wasn't flirty banter anymore. It was Liam's heart peeking through.

> Layla: You're making it very hard to guard my heart, you know.

His reply came instantly.

> Liam: Then stop guarding it. Let me.

Layla dropped her phone on the pillow, closing her eyes as warmth spread through her chest. She picked it back up, but instead of replying, she simply sent a single emoji: ❤️.

She half-expected him to tease her for it, but he didn't.

> Liam: Goodnight, Layla.

She whispered the words into the quiet room, though he couldn't hear her. "Goodnight, Liam."

And for the first time in a long while, sleep came easily.

The days that followed were surprisingly light. Layla noticed it first—how her mood at work had shifted, how her late-night routines now felt incomplete without Liam's name on her screen. The silence earlier had been heavy, but now, each chat, each call, was like a patch of sunshine she didn't realize she had been craving.

They joked again. They argued playfully about food, music, and whose city corner had the best shawarma. Layla laughed freely, and Liam… he held on quietly to the relief that she had reached out.

After few days, something weighed on him. He stared at their chat bubble longer than usual before typing:

> Liam: Can I ask you something?

> Layla: You always do. Go ahead.

> Liam: What if we saw each other again? Not by accident, not by surprise. I mean… you and me, out.

Layla paused, her heart skipping. She bit her lip, staring at the blinking cursor as though it might finish the thought for her.

> Layla: You mean another "adventure"?

> Liam: Exactly. But maybe softer this time. Dinner. Just us. No detours. No unexpected tricks.

> Layla: Hmm. You sound scared.

> Liam: I am, Layla. You said no talk of love. I'm respecting that. But if I don't ask to see you, I'll regret it.

Her chest warmed at his honesty. He wasn't pushing. He wasn't demanding. He was simply placing his heart in her hands again.

> Layla: Let me think about it.

> Liam: That's all I need. A maybe from you feels like a yes already.

She chuckled, shaking her head. "This man…" she whispered under her breath and yet, even as she set her phone aside, Layla felt it—the spark tugging her toward him, stronger than fear, stronger than doubt.
