Answering the question, Dallas stalled for a whole minute before finally saying, "I'm not free now."
That didn't sound like a no, Ivan thought. He said he wasn't free now, which meant he could be later.
His mind raced, trying to read between the lines. Was Dallas just busy? Or was he putting off the meeting because he didn't want to confront what had happened between them?
Did that mean he regretted it? Or did it mean he simply didn't feel the same way?
The thought unsettled Ivan in a way that made his stomach twist.
"What about later tonight?" Ivan asked without thinking. He glanced at the clock and saw that it was already five in the evening. The late afternoon sun filtered through the blinds, casting stripes across his room, but he barely noticed.
All he could focus on was the possibility that, by the time night came, he might finally get the answers he was aching for.
"What's this about?" Dallas asked hesitantly.
