Chapter 141 - Chapter 141 - The Heart’s Refusal

------

The elevator was a small, suffocating box of silver and glass. The silence between Gabriella and Jake was heavier than the metal cables holding them up. Jake didn't move; he just stared at her with deep, emotional eyes that seemed to plead for a different reality.

"You still love me, Gabriella," Jake said, his voice dropping to a low, painful vibration. "I can see it. That's why your hand is shaking. That's why you can't kill me."

Gabriella stood frozen. She was still in her all-black tactical gear, the dark fabric making her skin look pale and ghost-like under the flickering elevator lights. Her eyes were cold and filled with a sharp, jagged pain, but she didn't say a word. The air was thick with the ghost of the love they once shared—a love now buried under layers of betrayal and blood.

Suddenly, the elevator chimed and the doors slid open at the lobby. Without a second thought, Gabriella pushed Jake back with all her strength and rushed out. She didn't look back. She couldn't. If she saw his face one more time, the wall she had built around her heart might finally crumble.

The Quiet After the Storm

Later that night, Gabriella reached the Gabriella Mansion. The estate was eerily quiet, the grand marble pillars casting long, skeletal shadows across the floor. She hurried up to her room, her mind a whirlwind of Jake's eyes and the weight of the knife.

She reached into her pocket for her phone, but it was gone. Panic flared for a second—until she heard her mother's voice.

"Gabriella? Is that you?" Roselette stood at the bottom of the stairs, looking elegant even in her silk nightgown. She held out a device. "You forgot your phone, Felix brought it by earlier. He said you left it behind."

Gabriella walked down the stairs, her boots clicking softly on the marble. "Oh... yes. I forgot. Thanks, Mom."

As she took the phone, a wave of guilt hit her. She thought about how harsh she had been to Felix that afternoon at the orphanage. She had snapped at him, ignored him, when he was the one trying to protect her. I went too far, she thought. Should I call him? No... it's way too late.

Back in her room, Gabriella sat on the edge of her bed. The moonlight filtered through the sheer curtains, painting the floor in shades of blue. Her phone chimed. It was a message from Felix.

"I know you're upset, and I don't know why, but I wanted to check in. I was going to call, but I thought maybe you weren't ready to talk yet. Life isn't a smooth path, Gabby. It's full of ups and downs, worries and problems. If we give them too much power, we'll never find happiness. Just try to ignore the noise for tonight."

A small, genuine smile touched Gabriella's lips. "You're right," she whispered to the empty room. For a moment, the revenge felt far away.

The Broken Crown

The Grand Sapphire Lounge was buzzing with the elite youth of the city. The air was thick with the scent of expensive perfume and the sound of clinking glasses. Elizabeth stood in the center of her circle, looking breathtaking in a fitted emerald green cocktail dress that shimmered under the chandeliers. But her perfect smile faltered as the gossip turned toward a name she hated.

The Secret Out in the Open

"Did you hear?" one of her friends whispered, leaning in. "Our senior, Gabriella, is marrying Felix, the heir to Phoenix Enterprises. Today."

Elizabeth's eyes narrowed, her grip tightening on her glass. "Today? That's impossible. It's so sudden."

Her best friend leaned into her ear, whispering with a sharp smirk, "You should be celebrating, Elizabeth. The biggest obstacle between you and Jake is finally walking out of the picture for good."

Elizabeth didn't reply. Her heart hammered against her ribs. She didn't feel like celebrating; she felt a strange, cold dread. As another friend confirmed seeing the families shopping for wedding clothes just two days ago, Elizabeth turned on her heel and rushed out of the lounge, her silk skirts rustling against the marble floor.

The Drunken King

Inside the Emilda Mansion, the lights were dim. The room smelled of expensive bourbon and regret. Jake was slumped on the floor near his massive mahogany bed, completely drunk. His black dress shirt was unbuttoned at the collar, and his hair was a mess. In his trembling hand, he held his phone, staring at a happy selfie of him and Gabriella from a lifetime ago.

The door swung open with a bang. Elizabeth, his fiancé, stood in the doorway. She froze, her heart breaking at the sight of the powerful man reduced to a shadow.

She walked over, her silver heels clicking softly until she reached him. Jake looked up, his vision blurry. "Gabriella...?" he whispered, his voice thick with hope.

Then he saw Elizabeth's face. He froze and turned his gaze away, a bitter chuckle escaping his lips.

Elizabeth sat on the floor next to him, her emerald dress pooling around her. "What are you doing?" she asked, her voice cold but trembling with worry. "If you really love her, go. Chase her. Why are you sitting here broken like a fool?"

Jake looked at her in disbelief. "Why are you so concerned about me? You should be happy she's gone."

Elizabeth scoffed in pain, a single tear tracing a path through her perfect makeup. "You're right. I should be. But I can't stand seeing you like this. Before I change my mind... go!"

Jake didn't move until she said the words that hit him like a physical blow: "You won't get another chance. Today is her wedding."

Jake's eyes cleared instantly. He scrambled to his feet, fueled by a sudden, desperate adrenaline, and rushed out the door without looking back.

Elizabeth sat alone on the floor of the dark room. Her phone rang—it was her best friend from the lounge.

"He's gone," Elizabeth said into the phone, her voice sounding hollow.

"Are you a fool?" her friend screamed on the other end. "Why would you help him go to her? You just lost him!"

Elizabeth's voice softened as the tears finally began to fall freely. "Yes... I loved him. No, I was crazy for him. But..." she choked back a sob, "I couldn't watch him break. I'd rather lose him to her than lose the man I fell in love with to this darkness."

The Veil of Vengeance

The Grand Crystal Ballroom was a sight of pure, blinding luxury. Thousands of white orchids hung from the ceiling, their scent mixing with the expensive perfumes of the city's elite. Roselette and Frederick stood at the entrance, the perfect power couple, greeting guests with polished smiles. Beside them, Richardson and Janet laughed with Granny, looking like the picture-perfect happy family. But beneath the laughter, the foundations of the Lucien empire were rotting.

The Crown of Thorns

Inside the bride's suite, the mood was far from celebratory. Gabriella sat before a gilded mirror, looking like a tragic queen in her bespoke ivory silk gown. The dress featured a dramatic sweetheart neckline and sheer lace sleeves encrusted with tiny pearls.

Selina was busy pinning a heavy diamond crown into Gabriella's hair. "Don't get me wrong," Selina hissed, her voice sharp. "I'm on Raina's side. If you dare do anything to hurt her, I'll forget you're my sister-in-law."

Gabriella's usual icy mask was cracked, replaced by a deep, hollow sadness. "And if I do?" she asked coldly.

Selina scoffed, adjusting a stray curl. "How can I not accept you? You're Han's cousin, we're family anyway. Just... stay away from my bestie."

A small, faded smile touched Gabriella's lips, but it didn't reach her eyes. When Han walked in, Selina quickly changed her tone, fluttering out of the room with a fake grin. Han noticed the gloom immediately.

"Gabriella? Why do you look so dull?" he asked, handing her a velvet necklace box.

Gabriella looked at him, her heart aching. Han, would you still treat me like a sister if you knew I was actually your father's daughter from his secret second wife? She just nodded silently, unable to speak the truth that was choking her.She said "Nothing".

Dona burst into the room, breathless. "Gabby! I'm so sorry I'm late!" She stopped when she saw Han, a shy blush creeping up her cheeks. Han smiled at her and made his exit, leaving the two best friends alone.

Dona rushed to Gabriella's side, picking up a lipstick to fix her makeup. "Finally! The day is here!"

But as she tilted Gabriella's face up, Dona gasped. Gabriella's eyes were bloodshot, and fresh tears were streaming down her face, ruining her perfect mascara.

"What happened?" Dona whispered, terrified. When Gabriella didn't answer, Dona's eyes narrowed. "Don't tell me... is this about Jake?"

"I don't know," Gabriella sobbed, her voice trembling. "I'm not in a clear mind. My heart feels so heavy, Dona. I feel like I'm suffocating."

Dona stood back, shocked. "Gabby, you're marrying Felix today! How can you say this now? It's too late!"

Gabriella stood up, the heavy train of her dress rustling like dead leaves. "I know I should be happy. I told myself I moved on. But I can't. Everything... everything makes me want to scream."

Dona stepped forward and gently wiped the black streaks from Gabriella's cheeks. "Gabby."

Gabriella just looked at her, her silence more painful than any scream.

Outside the half-open door, a shadow stood perfectly still. Felix was dressed in a midnight-blue velvet tuxedo, looking every bit the handsome groom. But his face was a mask of pure, devastating sadness. He had heard every word—every sob, every mention of Jake, every doubt.

He reached into his pocket and pulled out a silk handkerchief, intended to wipe her happy tears away. Instead, he let it drop silently to the floor.

He didn't burst in. He didn't demand an explanation. He simply turned and walked away down the long, empty corridor, his footsteps echoing like a heartbeat slowing down.
