Chapter 13 - Chapter 13 — The Hunt of Shadows

Recap

Ethan had survived Kael's assassination attempt. His system revealed a new function — Godslayer's Authority. But using it drained him close to death. Meanwhile, Kael plotted harder, whispering poison into the ears of nobles. Now, Ethan must recover, train, and prepare for what's coming… while shadows still stalk his every step.

The chamber stank of blood. Ethan's clothes clung to his skin, shredded and painted in red. He lay slumped against the cold stone wall, lungs burning like fire, ears still ringing from the system's last notification.

[Godslayer's Authority: Consumed. Remaining cooldown — 7 days.][Warning: Mortal body strain level critical. Further usage before cooldown may result in soul collapse.]

His hands trembled as he stared at them. That power… the way it had cut through the assassins like a hot blade through butter. It wasn't just strength. It was authority. It was as though the world itself had bent for a moment.

And it had almost killed him.

Ethan chuckled bitterly, the sound hollow. Figures. Gods never give without taking back double.

The door slammed open. Vael stormed in, her armor smeared with dirt and blood from the courtyard skirmish. "Ethan!" She dropped to her knees beside him, hands glowing faintly with healing magic. "Don't you dare close your eyes. I warned you about overreaching."

He looked at her through bleary vision. "Did… we win?"

"Win?" Vael's tone was sharp, furious. "Surviving isn't winning." She pressed her palm to his chest, stabilizing his pulse. "You're reckless. You think this system of yours is a blessing? It's a curse tied to your life."

He wanted to argue, but his strength fled. Darkness dragged him down.

The Dream

He wasn't in the castle anymore. He stood in a desolate plain under a broken sky, thunder rolling in silence. Before him sat a figure cloaked in shadow, a grin gleaming like a crescent blade.

"Ah, my favorite toy stirs," Loki's voice slithered, half amusement, half venom. "Tell me, Ethan Cross… how did it feel? To wield what was never meant for mortal hands?"

Ethan clenched his fists. "You did this. You keep playing games with me."

"Games?" Loki chuckled, leaning closer. "Boy, this is art. Your suffering, your choices, your rebellion against fate—it's a masterpiece I paint with every brushstroke of chaos."

"And Claire?" Ethan spat the name like poison. "Where is she? Is she here? Or are you tormenting her too?"

For once, Loki's grin faltered. "Claire… oh, she's quite the wild card. Even the Goddess of Fate can't predict her completely. But don't worry, she's not gone. Yet."

Ethan surged forward, snarling. "I'll tear you apart, god or not. Fate-breaker, god-slayer—I don't care what I become, as long as I end you."

The god's laughter echoed across the dead plain, sharp and cruel. "Delicious! Rage suits you. Hate me more, Ethan. Hate me until it breaks your soul. Only then will you be worthy."

The dream shattered.

Awakening

Ethan jolted awake with a gasp, drenched in sweat. The chamber was dim, candles burned low. His body ached with every breath, but he was alive.

Vael sat slumped in a chair, head nodding as she dozed. Across the room, Seraphina watched silently, her emerald eyes glowing faintly in the candlelight. Unlike Vael, there was no worry in her expression—only cold assessment.

"You lived," Seraphina said flatly. "Barely."

Ethan smirked despite the pain. "Sorry to disappoint."

"You've drawn blood in the shadows of Kael's court. That was only the opening move," she warned. "Next time, they won't send blades. They'll send armies of politics and whispers. And those are harder to fight."

Ethan sat up slowly, ignoring the stabbing ache in his ribs. "Then I'll train. I'll fight. If Kael wants me gone, he'll have to bring more than knives."

The King's Summons

By dawn, word had spread through the castle. Whispers of assassins in the night, a bloody trail, Ethan Cross walking away alive. Some called it luck, others fate. Few dared voice what many thought—that the newcomer carried something unnatural.

The King summoned him to the throne room.

Ethan stood beneath the vaulted ceiling, Vael and Seraphina flanking him. The nobles gathered like vultures, eyes gleaming with suspicion. Kael stood among them, face carefully neutral, but the smirk in his eyes betrayed his delight.

The King's voice was thunder. "Ethan Cross. You have survived where most would fall. Tell me, how?"

Ethan hesitated. Revealing the system outright was suicide. But lying would invite more doubt.

"I fought with everything I had," Ethan said carefully. "And I refused to die."

Murmurs spread. Kael stepped forward, bowing with feigned respect. "Majesty, might I suggest we test this man further? If he truly carries strength beyond mortals, then let him prove it—not in shadows, but before all."

The King's gaze sharpened. "You would pit him in trial?"

"Yes," Kael said smoothly. "Let the Goddess's champion judge his worth. A duel sanctioned by divinity itself."

Gasps echoed. Even Seraphina's eyes widened. A Goddess's champion duel wasn't mortal politics—it was divine acknowledgment. Win, and Ethan would be recognized as chosen. Lose, and he'd be erased.

The King considered, then nodded slowly. "So be it. In three nights, the duel shall be held."

Kael's lips curled in triumph. Ethan met his gaze with burning defiance.

Training in the Blood Pits

The days that followed were merciless. Ethan was dragged to the blood pits, an underground arena where warriors honed themselves against beasts and each other. Vael trained him like a soldier, breaking his limits daily. Seraphina taught him to channel his strange new energy, weaving the system's prompts into real technique.

[New Skill: Phantom Step][Description: Temporarily dislocate presence in space, evading attacks or striking unpredictably. Duration: 1 second. Cooldown: 15 seconds.]

[New Skill: Blood Resonance][Description: Convert pain into raw power. The more damage taken, the stronger your strikes. Warning: Risk of self-destruction.]

Every night, Ethan collapsed half-dead. Every morning, he rose again, hatred fueling him.

Kael's spies reported back. And Kael smiled, plotting the final twist.

The Night Before

On the eve of the duel, Ethan stood in the courtyard, sword in hand, staring up at the stars. The air was heavy with silence.

Vael approached, eyes soft for once. "You don't have to prove anything. If you run—"

"I'm done running," Ethan cut her off, voice steady. "Kael wants me gone. Loki wants me broken. Fate wants me chained. No. Tomorrow, I'll show them. I'll break it all."

Seraphina emerged from the shadows. "Then don't fight like a man tomorrow. Fight like what you are becoming."

Ethan met her eyes. "And what's that?"

She smiled faintly. "A godslayer."
