The council was divided. Though Ethan won glory by defeating the Goddess's Champion, whispers now painted him as a dangerous puppet of the gods. Kael's words had sown seeds of fear, and Ethan discovered something terrifying within his system—a Corruption Counter. Every time he bent fate, the world itself seemed to resist him.
Now, under King Aldric's command, Ethan begins advanced training to master the Fate Threads—and learns just how dangerous meddling with destiny can become.
The Training Grounds of the Crown
The palace's hidden training chamber was nothing like the open arenas where soldiers sparred. This place was carved deep into the mountain beneath the castle, lined with obsidian walls etched with runes that pulsed faint blue. It was said to be where the first kings of Aldoria trained with divine weapons.
Ethan stood at its center, breathing in the heavy, metallic air. The chamber hummed faintly with magic, almost alive.
Beside him, Selene adjusted her gauntlets. "This place is meant for more than swords. The runes suppress outside interference. Whatever happens here stays here."
"And what exactly is supposed to happen?" Ethan asked, though he already felt the answer stirring inside him.
A new notification blinked before his eyes:
[ System Training Quest Activated ][ Objective: Unlock and stabilize Fate Thread Manipulation. ][ Warning: Interference with destiny increases Corruption Counter. ]
His jaw tightened. So it was true—every step into power demanded a price.
The Master of Threads
The heavy door creaked open. An older man entered, tall and wiry, his white hair tied back, his robes woven with golden embroidery that shimmered like strands of silk. His eyes were sharp, almost too sharp, as if he could see through flesh into the soul beneath.
"This," Selene said with respect, "is Master Rydel—the last living Threadweaver."
Rydel's gaze lingered on Ethan, unblinking. "So… you're the one who bent fate and survived." His voice was calm, but it carried weight like a blade resting against skin.
"I don't know about surviving," Ethan muttered, "but I'm still breathing."
Rydel's lips twitched in the faintest ghost of amusement. "We shall see if that remains true."
He raised his hand, and suddenly Ethan's vision blurred. Threads of golden light shimmered around Selene, around the chamber, even around his own body. Fine, delicate lines, as if every living thing was tied by strands of silk that pulsed faintly with energy.
"These," Rydel said softly, "are the threads of fate. Every choice, every breath, every heartbeat—woven into an endless tapestry. Most cannot see them. Fewer still can touch them. You, Ethan Cross… can sever them."
First Steps into the Web
Rydel gestured. "Try. Focus on Selene. Find her threads."
Ethan frowned, narrowing his eyes. Slowly, faint golden lines appeared. Some radiated outward in countless directions, others coiled tightly around her chest and arms. Each thread vibrated with a subtle rhythm.
He reached instinctively, and the system responded.
[ Fate-Breaker Mode Engaged ][ Thread Detected: Combat Reflex (+10% speed) ][ Action Available: Sever / Reinforce ]
Ethan's pulse quickened. He could feel it—Selene's reflexes, her very ability to react.
"Sever it," Rydel commanded.
Ethan hesitated. "That would weaken her."
"Exactly. To understand fate, you must both give and take. Now—cut."
Reluctantly, Ethan reached, and with a sharp tug, he severed the glowing thread. At once, Selene stumbled, her movements sluggish, her sword slipping half an inch from her grip.
Her eyes widened. "What did you—"
Ethan restored the thread with a thought, and her speed returned instantly.
She exhaled sharply, glaring at him. "Never do that in a real fight without warning me first."
Ethan raised his hands defensively. "Trust me, I didn't enjoy it either."
But inside, his heart raced. The power was terrifying… and intoxicating.
System Warning
The system pulsed again:
[ Corruption Counter: 3% ]
Ethan's stomach dropped. Just that one act—cutting a single thread—had increased the counter.
"Damn it," he muttered under his breath.
Rydel's sharp eyes flicked toward him. "Already, you feel it, don't you? The resistance of the world. The tapestry does not enjoy being touched. Pull too often, and it begins to unravel… dragging you with it."
"So what's the point of using this power if it corrupts me every time?" Ethan demanded.
Rydel smiled grimly. "The point, boy, is to learn control. Sever only what must be severed. Reinforce what must be strengthened. Fate is a balance, not a weapon of indulgence."
Trial of Balance
Rydel raised both hands. At once, glowing constructs formed—training golems of light and stone, their bodies bound with dozens of threads. They lurched toward Ethan, blades flashing.
"Your trial begins," Rydel intoned. "Defeat them… without letting corruption rise beyond your limits."
The golems attacked.
Ethan drew his blade, dodging a heavy swing. Threads glimmered across the golem's body—"Power," "Speed," "Balance." He reached and cut the Speed thread. The golem slowed instantly, giving him the opening to strike its chest.
[ Corruption Counter: 4% ]
Another came from behind. Ethan reinforced his own reflex thread, his body moving faster than thought.
[ Temporary Buff Applied: Reflexes +20% ][ Corruption Counter: 5% ]
He ducked, slashed, twisted fate itself with each move. The golems crumbled one by one, golden threads snapping like broken harp strings.
By the time the last fell, Ethan's chest heaved with exhaustion. Sweat drenched him, his blade trembled in his grip.
[ Training Complete ][ Fate Thread Mastery: Lv. 2 Unlocked ][ Current Corruption Counter: 7% ]
The Warning
Rydel stepped closer, eyes unreadable. "Seven percent. Already the tapestry resists you. Be careful, Ethan Cross. Your gift is a double-edged sword. Every act of severing pushes you closer to something… darker."
"What happens if it reaches one hundred?" Ethan asked quietly.
Rydel's lips thinned. "Pray we never live to see it."
Selene's Concern
Later, as they left the chamber, Selene walked beside him, her brow furrowed.
"You hid something," she said softly.
Ethan hesitated. "…The system showed me something new. A corruption counter."
Her eyes widened. "Corruption?"
"Every time I cut a thread, it rises. I don't know what happens if it maxes out."
Selene touched his arm, her grip firm. "Then promise me, Ethan. Promise me you won't lose yourself chasing power."
He looked at her, at the fire and fear in her eyes, and felt the weight of her trust. Slowly, he nodded. "I promise."
But deep inside, as the system's faint hum lingered in his mind, Ethan wasn't sure if any promise could withstand what was coming.
Kael's Shadow
Far above, in his own chambers, Kael listened as his informant whispered about Ethan's training.
"Thread mastery," the man said nervously. "He can cut… or strengthen others' fates."
Kael's smile was sharp, cold. "Good. The stronger he grows, the greater the fear he inspires. And when fear consumes the court, I will strike."
He poured wine into a crystal goblet, lifting it toward the moonlight.
"Drink deeply, Ethan Cross. The poison I've brewed for you… is fate itself."
