Chapter 15 - Chapter 15: INSIDE ÈKÓ

Patrick stepped out of his accommodation, deciding to explore the vibrant streets of Lagos. He hailed an Uber and headed to the mainland, eager to experience the city's bustling atmosphere.

As they drove, the Uber suddenly pulled over. Patrick's driver rolled down the window, exchanging words with a group of Nigerian police officers. The officers requested the driver to step out, and Patrick followed suit.

The officers thoroughly searched the vehicle, scrutinizing every nook and cranny. Patrick and the driver exchanged uneasy glances, wondering what was taking so long.

After what felt like an eternity, the officers finally allowed them to leave. Patrick breathed a sigh of relief as they drove off.

"What just happened?" Patrick asked the driver, curiosity getting the better of him.

The driver's expression turned somber. "In this country, the police is never your friend."

Patrick's eyes widened, reflecting on the driver's words. He realized that in some places, trust in law enforcement was a luxury.

Sophia and Cheryl frantically searched for Patrick, scouring every possible location. They tried calling him repeatedly, but his phone went straight to voicemail.

"Where could he be?" Sophia asked, her voice laced with worry.

Cheryl's eyes were wide with fear. "What if he's been kidnapped?"

The thought sent a chill down their spines. They tried to stay calm, thinking of their next move.

"We need to report this to the authorities," Sophia said, determination in her voice.

Cheryl nodded in agreement. "Let's go to the police station and file a missing person's report."

As they rushed to the station, their anxiety grew. Where was Patrick? Was he safe? They couldn't shake off the feeling that something terrible had happened.

Sophia and Cheryl's anxiety grew as they waited in line to file a missing person's report at the police station. After what felt like an eternity, they finally spoke to an officer, who listened attentively to their concerns.

The officer's expression turned serious. "We'll do everything we can to locate Patrick. Can you provide more information about his last known whereabouts?"

Sophia nodded, pulling out her phone to show the Uber receipt. "He got into an Uber headed to the mainland. That's the last we heard from him."

The officer's eyes widened. "We'll investigate the Uber driver and see if we can track Patrick's location."

As they left the station, Sophia and Cheryl exchanged worried glances. They knew Patrick was resourceful, but the uncertainty was eating away at them.

Meanwhile, Patrick's encounter with the police had left him shaken. As he walked away from the scene, he couldn't help but wonder what had just happened. The Uber driver's words echoed in his mind: "In this country, the police is never your friend".

Patrick's thoughts were interrupted by the sound of his phone buzzing. He pulled it out, but it was just a notification from a news article about St. Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland, who had also been kidnapped and sold into slavery. Patrick's eyes scanned the article, feeling a strange connection to the saint's story.

As Patrick stepped out of the Uber cab, the driver handed him a piece of paper with his number. "Oga-Sir, please be careful. Boys are not smiling," the driver said, his voice low and serious.

Patrick's eyes narrowed, unsure what the driver meant. "What do you mean?"

The driver's expression remained grave. "Just be careful, sir. Meet with people who speak English, not Yoruba. If you need a ride home, call me."

With that, the driver sped off, leaving Patrick standing alone on the bustling mainland streets. Patrick watched him go, feeling a mix of confusion and unease.

As Patrick looked around, he felt a sense of trepidation. What had the driver meant by "boys are not smiling"? And why should he avoid people who spoke Yoruba? Patrick's instincts told him to be cautious, but he needed to stay focused on his goals.

Patrick took a deep breath, trying to shake off the driver's ominous warning. He looked around, taking in the sights and sounds of the bustling mainland streets.

As he walked, he noticed a group of people gathered near a street corner, speaking in hushed tones. They glanced at him suspiciously, and Patrick felt a shiver run down his spine.

He quickly pulled out his phone and pretended to make a call, trying to appear busy. The group seemed to lose interest and dispersed, but Patrick knew he needed to be more careful.

As he continued walking, Patrick spotted a small café nearby. He decided to step inside, hoping to gather his thoughts and plan his next move.

The aroma of freshly brewed coffee enveloped him as he took a seat by the window. Patrick ordered a cup of coffee and sat back, watching the street scene unfold outside. Little did he know, his life was about to take a dramatic turn...

As Patrick sipped his coffee, he noticed a young woman sitting across from him, typing away on her laptop. She looked up and caught his eye, flashing a warm smile.

"Mind if I join you?" she asked, nodding towards the empty chair beside him.

Patrick hesitated for a moment before nodding. "Not at all."

The woman sat down, introducing herself as Nneoma. They struck up a conversation, discussing everything from Nigerian music to the latest tech trends.

As they chatted, Patrick found himself opening up to Nneoma in ways he hadn't expected. But just as he was starting to feel comfortable, Nneoma's expression turned serious.

"Patrick, I need to tell you something," she said, her voice low. "You're not safe here. There are people looking for you."

Nneoma's words sent a chill down Patrick's spine. "What do you mean? Who's looking for me?" he asked, his voice barely above a whisper.

Nneoma glanced around the café nervously before leaning in closer. "I'm not entirely sure, but I overheard some people talking about a foreigner matching your description. They mentioned something about the police being involved."

Patrick's mind racing, he thanked Nneoma for the warning and quickly paid for his coffee. As they parted ways, Patrick couldn't shake off the feeling that he was being watched. He decided to lay low for a while and gather more information about what was going on ¹.

As Patrick walked away from the café, he noticed a police van driving by with a wanted poster on it. The poster featured a list of individuals wanted for various crimes, including cyber stalking, abduction, and murder. Patrick's eyes scanned the poster, wondering if his face might be among the wanted individuals.

Suddenly, his phone buzzed with a call from an unknown number. Patrick hesitated for a moment before answering, hoping it might be some information about his situation. "Hello?" he said cautiously.

"Patrick, we've been expecting your call," a mysterious voice said on the other end. "We need to talk about your safety."

"Patrick, we've been expecting your call," the mysterious voice said, sending a shiver down his spine. "We need to talk about your safety."

Patrick's grip on the phone tightened. "Who is this? What do you know?"

The voice remained calm, almost amused. "We know you're in danger, Patrick. And we know you're wondering who's behind it all."

Suddenly, the line went dead. Patrick's eyes widened as he stared at his phone, his heart racing with anticipation.

As Patrick stood frozen, his phone buzzing again, he hesitated. Should he answer? What secrets lay on the other end?

The phone buzzed once more, and Patrick's finger hovered over the answer button...
