Chapter 78 - communication

Adam: A... a trap? What do you mean... a trap?

Greg: Todor probably noticed that I and Oli might be working together.

Adam: Does he? So... What does that mean? Was it that bad really?

Greg: Yeah it is. I thought I noticed it too late, I realised minutes before the Point Poker game started. I didn't have time to tell Oli anything, so he still thought it would be me to go to the next game.

Adam: Tell me about the trap! What could it possibly be?

Greg: Todor... if you think about it, why would he make sure all three of us are having different points?

Adam: What? Didn't we just discuss it?

Greg: He wanted either me or Oli to get eliminated, but if you rethink everything, if he would have won against me, and then let Oli win in the next game by making his allies resign right away - for example - would have caused a perfect scenario for him to eliminate just me. With me on 4 points and both him and Oli on 7 points, we would still have been put in the same match, me and Todor, and someone who is either on 5 or 6 points would have been in the same match... You know who was on 5 points at that time?

Adam: On 5 points...? I... I was on 5 points...

Greg: He didn't do that though, so he specifically wanted me and Oli to play against him. He wanted to make sure at least one of us is going to be eliminated.

Adam: Yeah! That's obvious-

Greg: Wrong.

Adam: . . . Huh...?

Greg: When he achieved his goal of leaving the three of us at different points after Vote Session... He already manipulated the next 2 upcoming games.

Adam: No way! That just can't be! How is that even possible? Even getting just 1 game to be manipulated sounds impossible, but... two?

Oli: This is the part that I also don't know entirely, since Greg had to make the decision and alternate the plan without being able to tell a single thing for me.

Adam: If the plan was to let Greg continue the games, why didn't you resign before he would have actually got eliminated?

Oli: Greg's behaviour was weird, not usual, but not just that, I actually tried to resign, but before I could say the word, Greg kicked my leg under the table, signaling me not to do it.

Greg: Todor surely noticed that as well I think, but there was not too much he could have done at that point.

Oli: Okay, let me talk a little as well Greg. I think in the explanation of things you forget something really important.

Greg: So what would that be?

Oli: The reason why was I okay originally to be eliminated in the Point Poker game.

Adam: You are right! It makes no sense to throw your chances away of winning anything.

Oli: Greg wanted to avoid the gamemaster and everyone who works for the show to be completely clueless about our alliance for a reason, so it was not an option to make a contract with the help of a referee to make it official.

Adam: But then how? Greg, you not just trusted a complete stranger, right?

Greg: Obviously not. To explain it clearly, I need to tell you how the communication between me and Oli worked.

In short, the paper under the tile we wrote the message for each other, except once, we have never met in there. On that piece of paper, we wrote crucial information and strategies to let the other know about everything we know. The other thing we wrote on the paper is the time of when the one who wrote the message will be back again to repeat this cycle.

Adam: Then... This way both of you know when the other will be back there to leave the next message.

Greg: Also, just to make it more secure, we coded our writing. We came up with a special Caesar Cipher method.

Adam: Ceasar... When you shift the letters in a text by a certain number of positions further in the alphabet?

Greg: It was just to make sure if someone finds it out, then they still couldn't understand what we are talking about. Plus we did a little trick for the time clue as well, so that it's not even possible to tell its reason is to announce the next date.

Oli: Oh, this is one I came up with, let me explain this one. So we had the paper that had a writing on it, on that side, we always left either 2 or 3, seemingly random straight lines, if someone would find the paper, they would just think it's an error made by the person who wrote it, but in reality, you can read time from it, flip the paper, hold it between your eyes and a lightsource, so of course, a lamp, the lines can be seen through the paper that way. The longest line represented the hour and the shorter ones represented nothing. After holding it up, rotate the paper by 90 degrees, and whatever direction the line was facing, that meant the time.

Adam: But... How did you know which direction the line is facing? A line has 2 ends.

Oli: Take both ends of the line, and check which end is the closest to any of the corners of the paper. That gives which end is the fixed one if it would be an actual clock, the other end would be the moving one, that gives the hour.

Adam: That's genius, no one can figure out if they find who made those messages!

Greg: It's true, except...

Adam: Except... Don't tell me, someone did? He?
