Chapter 18 - Trident of Shadows

At the corner, I leaned the woman against the wooden wall...! I moved closer to her body, barely touching, and I felt her tension as if I were the first man to approach her this closely...

So...! My curiosity says, isn't it a bit early for a whore to be hunting for customers? A woman holding a musical instrument in her hand, covering her entire body..! Is art not enough to cover all your living expenses?

"I can't be late getting home; I have children to take care of...! By the time I'm done with you, the sun will be setting."

You know..! I didn't grasp that, someone as beautiful as you...

Cutting me off, "Hmm!! Beautiful now and a moment ago old?"

What's with your actions in the streets?

She placed her hand on my chest... "I'm old enough to be welcomed by someone at the inn."

Hmm? I don't see you as very old compared to what I think!

"Fate is not kind to everyone; please don't ask so many questions!"

Parts of her body began to reveal themselves as she curled around my arms, her hands exploring my face...

I started laughing loudly in her face, which made her annoyed and wonder why I was laughing at such a moment...

"What's the matter?"

Let me ask one last question, what do you call this...?

Through my touch, I discovered that she was hiding a knife in a sensitive area of her body...

She lifted her face to meet my eyes, a smile on her lips, "It's for self-defense. A lonely woman like me... I'm sure you understand what I mean!"

Self-defense! Ha!

I pulled the cover off the knife; the color of the blade looked strange. I placed my tongue on the sharp edge...!

I quickly spat out what I had put in my mouth...! What a coincidence, it's the only poison I know well, the deadly heart spirit poison "Moki," a single dose is enough to kill a massive bear...

I placed the knife against her neck.

No more nonsense, woman; ordinary people don't use poison... Now, my question is, what's the name of the person who hired you?

"He didn't introduce himself, but he seems like a swordsman, wearing a hat with long hair…"

Hmm! Thinking about it, I have no idea what this Karl looks like. A swordsman, a hat, long hair... Could it be...! But how did he manage to know me?!

"Forgive me, sir! He promised me a large sum...! A woman like me would never dream of such a large amount, even if I worked a lifetime."

(I shoved her violently until she fell to the ground...)

You've managed to get this amount of money you're talking about...?

Engaging in such work, it's expected that you could be killed at any moment and end up causing your children to be displaced...

If money is more important than your life, then you surely deserve this disgusting work...

There she was, on the ground, I mean in a position of weakness... at my mercy...! She shot me a terrifying glance that I didn't understand the source of her audacity, but I didn't care much as I left the abandoned warehouse...

There's no pleasure in killing an unarmed person for amateurs; besides, I don't have enough time, there are people waiting for me.

Find a job that brings you income in a safer way.

"Click," a sound signaling the opening of a bag.

As I walked away from the place, that sound piqued my curiosity; she was only carrying a musical instrument, a shamisen wouldn't make the sound I heard...

I stopped walking and then turned around.

Completely different... with a strong and steady appearance...! The woman removed the covering from her head, revealing her face; her hair was short and simply styled, and her face showed a calm and steady expression.

She possesses the 'Trident of Shadows'... The weapon consists of three wooden shafts, with the middle piece being smaller compared to the two ends, connected to each other by screws or flexible joints that allow for folding and disassembly...

The upper part of the trident features a slightly curved sharp head, resembling the shape of a sickle or a bow, while the lower part has another end that curves in a similar fashion...

This design provides additional balance and flexibility during use. The flexible joints between the sections allow for dynamic movement, making the weapon versatile in both offense and defense, as it can be used as a long unit or split for close combat.

The woman grips the three-part trident firmly and balanced, holding both ends of the weapon with both hands.

Her right hand clasps the upper end with a steady grip, tilting the curved part forward in a manner that suggests readiness for defense or attack.

Her left hand holds the lower end with equal strength, also angling the curved part forward, creating an open angle between the two ends.

The middle wooden piece, which connects the two ends through the joints, is visible behind her body, extended horizontally.

The overall stance reflects skill in combat! She is undoubtedly strong! She just chose to hide under the guise of weakness.

"Excuse me! I should have introduced myself earlier! Am I to play these games and pretend to be something I'm not...! My name is Audrey... I pledged an oath of honor to Captain Karl; I am a duelist in the Golden Hawk Brigade."

Hey! That bastard, how did he manage to convince a bunch of lunatics to join him... he sends polite people!

As long as you're armed... then let's get started! There's no need to play around...

"Then have mercy on yourself."

Audrey launched her attack on me in a swift movement, her body bending forward powerfully, her legs slightly apart to maintain balance, with her right leg stepping forward and her knee bent, charging toward me...

Her right hand led the upper end of the trident at an angled curve while her left hand released the lower end of the trident, with the middle wooden piece supporting both ends...

Audrey focused her attack on the upper end as the main weapon to strike me.

The chain sickle "kusarigama" in my hand was ready to parry her attack; fragments of the lower end of her trident illuminated the space as they struck the ground.

Audrey changed her movement during the attack, raising her right hand to swing the upper end in a powerful circular strike, while her left hand supported the lower end to ensure balance and momentum. The middle wooden piece extended dynamically, forming a sharp arc that reflected the speed of her movement and the flexibility of the weapon, focusing her strike on the upper half of my body.

At the moment of impact, as I used the long sickle chain to obstruct her attack and immobilize her trident, her balance clearly faltered after the violent collision...

I succeeded in bringing her down to the ground, in a fatigued and exhausting position. Her body lay partially on the ground, supporting herself with her left arm bent under her chest, while her right arm was extended forward, as if she were trying to rise or was in pain from the force of the blow.

The three-part trident she had been holding lay discarded beside her, with the curved upper end touching the ground, indicating her temporary loss of control over it. Her face reflected extreme fatigue, with her eyes strained and her mouth slightly open, breathing heavily.
