Night had already settled over the city; dim lanterns cast long shadows across the streets while most people retreated into inns for the night.
Lily and Miho had done the same. Their lodging, however, was far more expensive and luxurious than any normal competitor's lodging. It contained two comfortable beds, polished wooden floors, and even a private bathroom. The cost didn't trouble Lily in the slightest—she had more than enough money to afford it.
At the moment, Lily sat alone at the small table near the window, a painting resting carefully in her hands.
She had managed to recover it from the black box she'd retrieved when the house collapsed during the attack. The box sat open on the table beside her, its worn velvet interior suggesting it had been protecting something precious for years.
The painting looked almost lifelike. Every brushstroke was meticulous enough that it felt as though the figures might breathe if she stared long enough.
