The door hit the wall behind it and bounced back slightly on its hinges.
An old man stood in the doorway.
He was maybe late sixties, wearing a robe over pajamas, his grey hair sticking up on one side like he had come straight from bed.
He stepped onto the roof and looked around with the energy of someone who had been building up to this moment for a while.
"Ah—" He pointed at nothing in particular. "Ahh. I knew it. Shameless people. I knew you miscreants were up here doing nonsense—"
He stopped.
He looked around the roof properly.
Nothing. Nobody. Just the blanket on the floor and the city lights beyond the edge and the cold air moving across the open space.
He frowned.
He took two steps further onto the roof and turned in a slow circle, his eyes moving across every corner, every shadow, every possible place a person could be.
Nothing.
His frown deepened.
