Chapter 14 - HollowRoot Academy

The bus rumbled away, leaving Nico standing at the edge of the stone path that led to Hollow Root Academy. The air here felt different—thicker somehow, as if the village itself was holding its breath. The academy rose from the center of Hollowroot like a monument carved from old bones: tall, pale brick walls, narrow windows, and a roofline that cut sharply against the gray sky.

A place built on history, his mother had said. A place built on discipline, the brochure had promised. A place built on last chances, Nico thought.

He adjusted the strap of his bag and stepped forward.

The iron gates creaked open before he touched them, as though the academy had been waiting.

The Grounds

The courtyard was immaculate—too immaculate. Grass trimmed to identical lengths. Pathways swept clean despite the wind. Even the trees seemed to stand straighter here, their branches reaching upward in rigid formation. Beyond the courtyard, Nico spotted the three dormitories: the girls' dorm to the east, the boys' dorm to the west, and the teachers' dormitory looming behind them like a watchtower.

Students moved between buildings in quiet lines, their uniforms crisp, their expressions unreadable. No one laughed. No one lingered. No one broke formation.

A bell chimed in the distance—low, resonant, and cold.

Nico swallowed. This wasn't a school. It was a system.

Inside the Academy

The main hall smelled faintly of old books and disinfectant. Portraits of former headmasters lined the walls, their painted eyes following him with unsettling precision. A signboard displayed the academy's rules in bold lettering:

CURFEW: 10:00 PM – 5:00 AM. NO EXCEPTIONS.REQUEST FORMS REQUIRED FOR ALL NON-ISSUED ITEMS.CAMPUS LEAVE ONLY DURING SCHEDULED BREAKS.FOREST ENTRY STRICTLY FORBIDDEN.

Nico paused at the last one. The forest. Even from the courtyard, he'd felt its presence—a dark mass of tangled branches just beyond the fence line. It seemed to lean toward the academy, listening.

A shiver crawled up his spine.

Classroom 3F

A teacher with a clipboard intercepted him near the stairwell.

"You're the new arrival," she said, not bothering to ask. "Nico Castellen. You'll report to Classroom 12B for orientation. And"—her eyes flicked over him, sharp and assessing—"you will avoid Classroom 3F unless you intend to earn a place there."

Nico frowned. "What's in 3F?"

"Consequences," she replied, already walking away.

He didn't ask again.

The Heart of the Academy

The cafeteria buzzed with quiet conversation, but even here, the atmosphere felt controlled. Students sat in neat rows, eating identical meals. The library, visible through a glass wall, was vast and beautiful—towering shelves, spiral staircases, warm lamplight—but not a single student dared speak above a whisper.

Science labs lined the far corridor; their doors marked with hazard symbols and strict warnings. Nico caught glimpses of equipment he didn't recognize—strange instruments, sealed cabinets, and something that looked suspiciously like a containment chamber.

This place wasn't just strict. It was secretive.

The Forest's Shadow

As Nico made his way toward the boys' dormitory, the wind shifted, carrying the scent of pine and something older—earthy, damp, almost metallic. The forest loomed behind the academy, its trees packed tightly together, their trunks dark and twisted.

He couldn't see far past the first row of branches, but he felt watched.

A student passing by noticed his stare. "Don't even think about it," she muttered. "People who go in there don't come back the same."

Nico turned to ask what she meant, but she was already gone.

A New Beginning—or a Warning

Night settled quickly over Hollow Root Academy. Lights flickered on in the dormitories, casting long shadows across the courtyard. Nico stood at his window, watching the forest sway in the wind. The curfew bell rang, echoing through the halls like a warning.

He wasn't sure if this place would fix him.

He wasn't sure it was meant to.

But as the last light faded from the sky, Nico felt something shift—like the academy itself had taken notice of him.

And somewhere in the forest, something shifted back.
