Chapter 405: Kingambit!
"Escavalier is unable to battle!!! Gyarados wins the round!!!"
The referee's flag dropped, punctuating the silence of the arena.
Kenji looked across the field at Mason Chu, a trace of suspicion in his eyes. He
didn't understand why a member of the Elite Four would let a Pokémon like
Escavalier be taken out so "cheaply" without making a more tactical play.
Mason Chu let out a long, heavy breath and raised his Poké Ball. "Return,
Escavalier."
He drew the fallen knight back into its sphere. His expression remained
unreadable, but as he reached for his next Pokémon, his aura shifted. It was no
longer the calm of a veteran; it was the focused intent of a general leading a
final charge.
"The board is set. I choose you! Kingambit!!"
BOOM!!! —
The ball burst open, and a majestic, humanoid Pokémon hit the floor.
It was clad from head to toe in ornate crimson-and-black armor that looked like
a suit of ancient samurai plate. A massive, gleaming golden blade protruded from
the top of its head, resembling a grand crest. It sat cross-legged on a
hair-like tuft of its own body, radiating a posture of absolute authority.
Kenji finally understood. Escavalier hadn't been a sacrifice—it had been a
setup.
[Kingambit] Gender: Male Level: 98 (Champion Peak) Type: Steel / Dark Ability:
Supreme Overlord (Attack and Special Attack are increased for each ally that has
been defeated in the current battle.) Potential: S-
"Puuu-JIANG!!! —"
Kingambit let out a sharp, resonant roar. As it stood, its aura exploded.
With four of its allies already defeated, the Supreme Overlord ability hit its
stride. Kingambit's Attack and Special Attack were instantly boosted by four
stages!!!
A +4 offensive boost was the equivalent of having used Swords Dance and Nasty
Plot twice each the moment it hit the field. The sheer pressure radiating from
the armored general was so intense it actually pushed back the mist in the
arena, momentarily overshadowing Gyarados's presence.
Feeling the rival aura, Gyarados's eyes flared with a primal, draconic fury. It
wasn't about to be out-flexed by a bipedal dog. It let out a roar that
threatened to tear the roof off the facility.
"ROAAAARRRR!!!! —"
Mason Chu's pupils shrank. Gyarados was still standing alone in the arena, but
in Mason's vision, the massive blue serpent had transformed. It looked like a
towering, sky-blotting tidal wave, a wall of sapphire death that was currently
crashing down upon him.
The feeling of human insignificance in the face of a natural disaster was so
profound that Mason nearly lost his grip on his own battle spirit.
He was holding back... Mason realized with a jolt of terror. The previous rounds
weren't its full power. This is the true, unchained presence of a 4-Star Gym
Leader-rank legend!!
Mason had only ever felt this level of existential dread when facing the
absolute highest tier of First-Class Legendaries. To feel it from a Gyarados was
a biological impossibility.
While Mason struggled as a spectator, his Kingambit—locked inside the energy
barrier—felt the full weight of the strike.
But Kingambit was a king in its own right. As the final evolution of Bisharp, it
was a creature that only evolved once it had conquered all other leaders in its
territory. It was a natural-born ruler, and its pride refused to let it bow to a
serpent.
Although it was technically a brilliant commander of armies, Kingambit's
personal combat style was that of a total "Brute." It knew only one way to win:
to crush the opponent with overwhelming physical force.
"Kingambit!! Use Iron Head!!!"
"PU-JUN!!!! —"
Kingambit let out a war cry. The massive golden blade on its head became coated
in a brilliant, cold metallic sheen. It charged, the golden cleaver glowing with
enough power to split a mountain.
Facing the incoming general, Gyarados roared, meeting the charge with its own
favorite weapon.
BOOM!!!! —
The golden blade of Kingambit slammed into the massive Aqua Tail of Gyarados.
A geyser of water and sparks exploded in the center of the arena, the spray
reaching the observer's gallery.
Gyarados was pushed back two or three meters, its massive body skidding through
the dirt. Kingambit, meanwhile, landed firmly on its feet, its eyes flashing
with a mocking, victorious light.
In this first exchange of raw strength, the general had taken the lead.
Even with the suppression of Gyarados's dual-aura, a Level 98 Champion with a +4
Attack boost was a force of nature.
Kenji, however, didn't look panicked. In fact, he looked intrigued.
"Let's see if you can handle the real weight of a crown. Gyarados!! Use
Conqueror's Infusion!!!"
"ROAAAARRR!!!!! —"
As Kenji shouted, Gyarados slammed its tail into the ground. In the next
heartbeat, the massive, oppressive aura that had been blanketing the stadium
suddenly began to contract.
The weight lifted from Mason Chu's shoulders. He felt like he could finally
breathe again.
But instead of relief, a deeper, more primal sense of unease settled in his gut.
The aura wasn't "gone"—it was being funneled.
He watched in awe as the shimmering, translucent pressure of Gyarados's soul
began to wrap around its own body, coiling specifically around its tail. The
sapphire scales began to glow with a dark, pulsating energy that made the air
around the limb warp and ripple.
Gyarados charged again, whipping up a new Aqua Tail.
Kingambit, confident from the first trade, repeated its tactic. It lowered its
head, the golden blade glowing with Iron Head as it lunged to meet the serpent.
KRA-KOOM!!!! —
"PU-JUN!!!! —"
The world seemed to turn white for a second. This time, the result was a total
reversal.
The "Infused" Aqua Tail didn't just meet the Iron Head—it crushed it. Kingambit,
the unmovable general, was physically lifted off its feet and launched backward
with the force of a high-speed collision.
The armored general performed two violent somersaults along the floor before
finally skidding to a halt. It propped itself up with its claws, staring at
Gyarados with a look of absolute, soul-shaking shock.
What... what was that?! How did its power double in a single second?!
Mason Chu was equally stunned. He had seen thousands of techniques, but he had
never seen an "Aura Infusion" that physically amplified a move's kinetic output
to this degree. It was a skill that defied all known training protocols of the
Huaxia League.
Kingambit struggled to its feet, its golden blade dented and its pride
shattered. It was no longer the one doing the bullying. It was now looking up at
a true monster.
