A total of twenty-one people from seven teams passed the second exam.
Compared to the original, there were three more Itsukis and three fewer Sound Ninjas, so the number of participants remained the same.
But in truth, this was also part of the future settings fabricated by Itsuki.
Everyone gathered together as the Third Hokage began speaking at length, explaining the importance of this joint Chunin Exam among the allied villages.
Few candidates were listening carefully. Most were watching one another, each deep in thought.
After all, anyone who had made it this far couldn't be underestimated—whether for their strength or their luck.
From now on, everyone was an opponent, so observing and understanding each other was necessary.
Among the group, Itsuki was without question the most dazzling figure.
Not only did he attract the attention of the candidates, but even the jonin present couldn't help glancing at him more than once.
"Is that boy Itsuki? I heard he graduated from the same class as your student. But his strength might even surpass a jonin's," Might Guy remarked, after once again being ignored by Kakashi when trying to show off his own students.
"He's an extremely outstanding genius," Kakashi replied. He wasn't holding his little book in such a serious occasion.
Guy's eyes widened. "If even you call him a genius, then he must truly be one. I'd love to see him fight my students—it would be quite interesting."
Kakashi smiled. "Although I don't want to say this, there's a high probability they'd be defeated instantly. Even I'm not sure I could win against him. No matter how strong your students are, they can't defeat Itsuki."
"That's hard to say!" Guy grinned with confidence. "Youth is infinite passion and endless possibilities. I believe my students are no worse than anyone else. With hard work, one can easily surpass genius!"
Kakashi only smiled faintly and didn't argue.
"Before the third exam begins, I must say one more thing…" The Third Hokage continued speaking like an old leader who always needed to "add a few more words," though all of it was meaningful.
"Don't treat this as an ordinary exam. This is a battle for your dreams and the prestige of your village. You must fight with your lives on the line."
"Enough nonsense!" Gaara finally interrupted. "Just tell us how to fight to the death."
"Very well!" The Third Hokage, seeing the candidates' impatience, reluctantly cut his speech short.
He added, "Although I would explain further, I'm too old now. My heart is weak."
At that moment, Gekkō Hayate appeared dramatically.
"Leave the rest to me, the referee… Gekkō Hayate!"
"Before we begin the third exam, everyone needs to… cough, cough, cough…"
Hayate, despite his name, never made it to Shippuden. Perhaps Shippuden was named in his memory—who knows?
He was a special jonin of Konoha, directly under the Hokage's Anbu, and in a romantic relationship with Yugao Uzuki.
But his body was frail. His face was pale as paper, dark circles beneath his eyes, and he coughed uncontrollably with every breath.
With this kind of health, whether he had a lover or not didn't make much difference—he couldn't do much at all. He might even cough out his lungs from a kiss.
The candidates stared at him in disbelief. Could someone like this really be the referee?
What if he collapsed during a critical moment and got crushed in the aftermath of a fight?
Itsuki also looked at Hayate, hesitating whether to save him.
After all, Hayate was still one of Konoha's backbones.
Letting him die when he knew what was coming wasn't something Itsuki could easily accept.
But… since Yugao was already a member of the Itsuki harem chat group, as long as Hayate lived, she could never truly turn to Itsuki's side.
This made things complicated. Should he prioritize character—or women?
This was the question!
Using fabricated future events to distort Hayate's character just so Yugao would leave him would be despicable.
In the end, Itsuki decided—although he admired Yugao, he wouldn't scheme for a woman. If he could save Hayate, he would. The rest was fate.
While Itsuki's mind turned, Hayate managed to finish explaining the rules of the preliminaries.
As in the original, Kabuto Yakushi suddenly withdrew.
"I've seen him a few times, and he seemed like this before. What's his goal?" Anko Mitarashi muttered, holding Kabuto's file. "This was his seventh attempt at the exam."
The Third Hokage asked, "What do his records show?"
Anko glanced down. "His grades in school were average. He barely graduated after three attempts. He completed two C-rank missions and fourteen D-rank missions. Nothing special."
She added, "But before he joined the academy… do you remember? The boy I brought back from the Battle of Kikyo Pass?"
The Hokage thought for a moment, then his eyes widened. "So that was the enemy boy who survived, later adopted by a medical-nin jonin. Who would have thought…"
The Hokage silently noted it. He decided to have Kabuto investigated after the exams.
This was also what determined Gekkō Hayate's fate in the original story.
Meanwhile, among the candidates, Sakura was still trying to convince Sasuke to give up.
The cursed mark left by Orochimaru caused Sasuke unbearable pain.
He couldn't even activate his Sharingan. How could he fight in this state?
Sakura also knew Sasuke's opponent—Karin. And Sasuke would lose.
There was no way Karin would go easy on him. Even if Sakura was love-struck, she wouldn't ask that—unless Sasuke's opponent had been Naruto.
To spare Sasuke humiliation, Sakura begged him to quit.
But Sasuke only snapped at her.
"Shut up. My business has nothing to do with you. Mind your own business," Sasuke said coldly. "I'm an avenger."
"For me, this isn't just a test. Whether I become a Chunin doesn't matter. I just want to know if I'm strong enough. I want to fight the strong ones who came here."
His eyes swept over Gaara, Rock Lee, Neji, and finally, Itsuki.
Those were the opponents he wanted to defeat.
How could he back down before even trying?
Sakura fell silent, disheartened.
Compared to the sisters in the Itsuki harem chat group—and even compared to Itsuki—Sasuke never truly saw her. He treated her like air.
Seeing that no one else withdrew, Hayate announced the matches would begin. The electronic screen started drawing lots.
In the original story, there might have been hidden manipulation.
But in Itsuki's fabricated future, every opponent had already been arranged.
The first matchup appeared: Uchiha Sasuke vs Uzumaki Karin!
Sakura grew pale with worry. Sasuke, on the other hand, smirked with confidence.
She could only pray that he wouldn't be left unable to recover after this fight.
"Huh? I'm up first!" Karin feigned surprise and glanced at Itsuki. "My opponent seems to be your cousin, Itsuki-kun. Should I show him mercy?"
Itsuki smiled faintly. "Do whatever you want."
"I understand!" Karin giggled. After taking down those Grass ninjas earlier, her energy was high.
"Then… the two whose names appeared above, step forward!" Hayate coughed from the center of the arena.
"The first round is Uchiha Sasuke vs Uzumaki Karin. Any objections?"
