(KRYSTAL'S POV)
I stand in front of his door for a moment longer than I need to with my hand hovering about the handle.
I don't know what I'm waiting for.
Permission, maybe?
Or courage.
Or just another second before I have to walk in and see him the way he is now.
Finally, I press the handle down and push the door open.
The first thing that hits me is the sound of the beeping sound of the heart monitor.
Then I see him. The oxygen mask fogging faintly with each shallow breath. The web of wires running from his body to the machines around the bed. The bandaging over his chest. His auburn hair pushed back from his face by whatever nurse last adjusted his pillow, the curls slightly flattened and wrong.
He looks exactly like his usual self. But now… he's so completely unreachable that the distance between us feels like something physical. Like a wall made of all the things his body is no longer doing.
Nobody knows if he's ever going to wake up.
