Heiteng came up from the yard at the first bell with his hands empty, which is how she knew.
"The stone. My brother has left something on it for you." He held the door. "Sealed to you."
Then he went back down to the yard and left her with it.

The stone sat on a grain sack in the corner of the storehouse, a dark flat thing the size of her two hands, and when she put her palm on it, it warmed, and then there was a voice in the room.
It was a voice she had never heard.
A year of letters, and paper does not carry a voice. It was lower than she had imagined, and slower, and it did not hurry for anything. Pitched for a room, not a hall. Each word set down as if it had been weighed first. That much she noticed before she had taken in a single thing he was saying, and noticed herself noticing it, and sat down on the next sack over because her knees had suggested it.
