The seven houses came to him, which had never happened before, and which told him what the Anseth report had done before anybody opened their mouth.
They came separately over nine days, which was sensible of them, and they came to the small room at the back of his own house because Vukan would not go to any of theirs. That had been a rule since the first year. A man who does his thinking in other people's parlors ends up doing other people's thinking.
Enna Roth came first, on the fifteenth, and she is the one who matters.
"You've been telling us for four years we should do nothing," she said.
"I have been telling you that nothing you were proposing would work. That is a different sentence, and I have said it carefully every time."
