Cangwei got the fourth refinement back on the twenty-first of Cinderfall and sat on the floor of a rented room for most of an hour afterward.
Not because it hurt. Because it had taken five months, and because for the first three of those she had not believed it was coming, and a woman who has spent three months quietly deciding that a thing is gone does not get to simply pick it up again on a Temperday morning and go about her business.
Four months of work. Call it four; she had done nothing useful with the first.
What she had now, in order, because she had made herself write it on the back page of a ledger that is not the Temple's:
The wing is as it will be. A hand's width short, permanently, and she has stopped testing it.
