Chapter 118: Lodge Resources
POV: Adam
The Lodge's library contained knowledge that would take lifetimes to fully absorb.
I focused on specific subjects: fire magic, dimensional theory, and—most intriguingly—pre-Conjunction records that mentioned "element wielders" in terms that felt uncomfortably familiar.
"The Avatar walked between nations, bringing balance where chaos threatened. Four elements answered their call—earth and water, air and fire—bound by spirit that unified all forces into singular purpose."
The text was ancient, copied from sources even older, describing beings from worlds that no longer existed. But the parallels to my own abilities were impossible to dismiss.
"You've found the Avatari records." Margarita had noticed my absorption in the ancient texts. "We've debated their significance for decades. Some believe they describe actual historical figures—element wielders from dimensions destroyed during the Conjunction. Others consider them mythology."
"What do you believe?"
"I believe mythology often preserves truths that history forgets." She settled into a chair across from my reading position. "Your abilities match the descriptions remarkably well. Three elements mastered, fourth approaching, spiritual awareness developing. If the records are accurate, you're continuing a tradition that predates human civilization."
"That's... a lot to process."
"Then process it gradually. The texts aren't going anywhere." Her smile held genuine warmth. "More immediately relevant: fire element requires emotional catalyst beyond simple leveling. The records suggest intense passion—love, rage, grief, joy. Something that burns hot enough to ignite the transformation."

POV: Ciri
The artifact vault offered choices that would affect combat for months to come.
"The Lodge provides equipment to allies facing significant threats." Assire var Anahid—the youngest Lodge member, still learning the organization's politics—guided them through selections. "Nothing irreplaceable, but useful for specific purposes."
Three items had been set aside for Adam's consideration: a pendant featuring a phoenix feather that offered fire resistance and minor healing, bracers inscribed with runes that prevented forced teleportation, and a ring designed to amplify elemental power near ley lines.
"The bracers." Adam's choice came immediate. "The Hunt's primary advantage is dimensional mobility. If they can't teleport me away from Ciri during combat..."
"They lose their ability to separate and isolate." Ciri completed his logic. "Smart choice."
Her own selection was simpler—a focusing crystal that responded to Elder Blood, improving portal stability and control. The crystal hummed when she touched it, recognizing something in her bloodline that resonated with its enchantment.
[ EQUIPMENT ACQUIRED: Dimensional Anchor Bracers ]
[ Effect: Prevents forced teleportation by external sources ]
[ Combat Application: Maintains positioning against dimensional attacks ]
[ EQUIPMENT ACQUIRED: Elder Blood Focusing Crystal (Ciri) ]
[ Effect: Improves portal stability, reduces control strain ]
Additional supplies followed: healing potions stronger than anything available commercially, magical reagents for emergency spell components, escape scrolls that could teleport the user short distances regardless of blocking wards.
"War provisions." Assire's assessment came matter-of-fact. "The Lodge anticipates the Hunt will return stronger. Better that you survive to use these than die for lack of preparation."

POV: Adam
Margarita's warning came on their final evening at the Lodge.
"A moment, if you have it." The scholarly sorceress had found him in the library, still absorbing texts about fire element manifestation. "Private words, before you depart."
"Of course."
She settled into the chair across from him, expression carrying weight that suggested careful preparation.
"Philippa has plans beyond the Hunt conflict. She always does—schemes within schemes, layers of manipulation that extend years into the future." Margarita's voice dropped despite the library's apparent privacy. "The current alliance is genuine, but temporary. Once the Hunt is defeated—assuming you survive—the Lodge will return to political maneuvering. Ciri's power, your power, both become pieces on a board you can't fully see."
"We expected as much."
"Expecting and preparing are different things." Her hand found his arm, grip surprisingly strong. "Maintain independence. Trust no sorceress completely—including me. Whatever we offer, whatever we promise, remember that self-interest drives everything we do. The Lodge serves the Lodge, always."
"Then why warn me?"
"Because I remember being young and idealistic. Because I've watched powerful mages lose their humanity to isolation and ambition." Her smile held sadness. "You and Ciri have something genuine—love that survived crises that would have broken most relationships. Protect that. When power accumulates, it's easy to forget why you wanted it in the first place."
"Your friends. Your connections to normal people. Geralt, the Skellige warriors, anyone who sees you as person rather than tool." Margarita stood, preparing to leave. "The Lodge will try to separate you from them—not obviously, but gradually. Isolation makes manipulation easier. Don't let it happen."
"I won't."
"Good." She paused at the library door. "For what it's worth, I hope you win. Both against the Hunt and against whatever comes after. The continent needs people who use power for protection rather than control."
—Scene Break—
POV: Geralt
The final night in Lodge territory passed with the tension of people preparing for departure.
Geralt found Ciri and Adam on a balcony overlooking the training grounds where Adam had demonstrated his power. The young man's exhaustion had faded over the two weeks since, replaced by readiness that came from proper rest and continued training.
"Ready to return home?"
"Ready to stop being watched constantly." Adam's response carried no heat. "The Lodge's resources were worth the discomfort, but I'll sleep better in Skellige."
"Political alliances are never comfortable. Just useful." Geralt settled against the balcony railing. "You've both grown since arriving. Ciri's teleportation control, your public reputation, the intelligence we've gathered—valuable regardless of the Lodge's long-term intentions."
"And their long-term intentions?" Ciri's question held edge.
"To use you, eventually. But that's true of everyone with power. The difference is whether you let them, and what you get in exchange." The witcher's golden eyes found Adam's. "You handled the demonstration well. Showed enough to establish deterrence without revealing everything. Good tactical instincts."
"Learned from the best."
"Flattery won't make tomorrow's journey shorter." But Geralt's smile acknowledged the compliment. "We leave at dawn. Lambert's probably already drunk and celebrating departure. Try to get some sleep—real preparations begin when we reach Skellige."
[ LEVEL UP! 46 → 47 ]

[ Note: Returning to Skellige for war preparation phase ]
The journey home would take a week. The war preparations would take longer. But armed with knowledge, equipment, and allies—however temporary—the odds had shifted.
The Hunt was still coming.
But so were they.
