Chapter 117: The True Threat
POV: Adam
The Lodge's research presentation took place in a chamber designed for intimidation through knowledge rather than height.
Maps covered every wall—not ordinary cartography but dimensional representations showing the relationships between worlds. Lines of connection traced paths between spheres, some stable and well-documented, others fragmentary and theoretical. At the chamber's center, a table held texts, diagrams, and artifacts that represented decades of accumulated study.
"The Conjunction of Spheres occurred fifteen hundred years ago." Margarita led the presentation, her scholarly nature making her ideal for conveying complex information. "When dimensional barriers weakened temporarily, allowing migration between worlds. That's how monsters arrived in our dimension—sirens, griffins, vampires. All refugees from dying or hostile realities."
"The Hunt came then too?"
"The Hunt's ancestors came. Aen Elle—elves from a dimension called Tir ná Lia. They found our world suitable but preferred to maintain connection to their homeland rather than settling permanently." Margarita gestured toward a map showing Tir ná Lia's position relative to our reality. "For centuries, they traveled freely between dimensions. Then their world began dying."

POV: Geralt
The witcher studied the dimensional maps with interest born from decades of monster hunting.
Understanding where creatures came from had always seemed academic—what mattered was killing them before they killed you. But the Hunt wasn't ordinary monsters. They were people, of a sort. People whose civilization faced extinction.
"Magical contamination." Margarita continued, tracing lines that represented energy flows in Tir ná Lia. "Their own experiments destabilized their dimension's fundamental structure. The world is freezing—not just climate but existence itself. Within centuries, possibly sooner, their realm will collapse entirely."
"So they're desperate." Ciri's observation carried undertones I couldn't quite identify. "Not evil, just trying to survive."
"The distinction matters less than you might think." Philippa's interjection came sharp. "Their methods include hunting a teenager across dimensions, threatening genocide of multiple realities, and willing to sacrifice anyone necessary for their survival. Desperation doesn't excuse atrocity."
"But it explains it." Adam's contribution drew attention. "Understanding motivation provides tactical advantage. If they're desperate rather than malicious, there might be options beyond simple conflict."
"Options such as?"
"If their world could be saved without draining Ciri's power, would they stop hunting her?" Adam's question hung in the air. "Is there any way to stabilize Tir ná Lia that doesn't require Elder Blood sacrifice?"
—Scene Break—
POV: Ciri
The debate that followed forced her to confront questions she'd avoided.
"No known magic can restore a dying dimension." Margarita's assessment came gentle but certain. "We've researched extensively. The energy required would exceed anything our world could produce—probably exceed anything multiple worlds combined could produce."
"But 'known magic' isn't the only kind." Adam pressed. "My abilities don't fit your categories. What if sufficient elemental power, properly applied, could do what ordinary magic can't?"
"You're suggesting you might save the Hunt's world personally?"
"I'm suggesting the possibility exists. At higher levels—" He caught himself, rephrasing. "With sufficient development, my capabilities might include dimensional manipulation directly. Energy bending that could stabilize collapsing realities."
Philippa's expression shifted to something between calculation and genuine interest. "You believe this?"
"I believe it's worth exploring. The alternative is exterminating an entire civilization because their survival threatens ours. If there's any path that doesn't require genocide..."
"You'd take it. Even if it risks your own survival." The sorceress's assessment carried something that might have been respect. "Idealistic, but not entirely impractical. The Hunt might negotiate if presented with genuine alternatives."
"They might." Geralt's caution dampened the growing optimism. "Or they might see it as delay tactic and attack anyway. Desperate people don't always think clearly."
"Then we need to become strong enough that attacking us seems worse than negotiating." Adam's conclusion settled the debate. "Which brings us back to preparation rather than speculation."

POV: Adam
The Lodge's gift changed everything tactically.
Margarita presented the artifact with ceremony that suggested its significance: a compass-like device housed in crystal, its needle pointing not toward magnetic north but toward dimensional disturbances.
"The Navigation Device." Her explanation came with evident pride. "Tracks rifts between dimensions—natural and artificial. You can detect where and when portals will open, locate stable passages into other realities, even sense when the Hunt is preparing to manifest."
"This lets us see them coming."
"More than that. It lets you choose when and where to engage." Margarita activated the device, its needle swinging to indicate various points around the compass. "Each direction represents a dimensional frequency. The Hunt uses specific bands—we've calibrated the device to highlight their signatures. When they prepare to attack, you'll know hours in advance."
[ ITEM ACQUIRED: Dimensional Navigation Device ]
[ Function: Detects dimensional rifts and Hunt manifestations ]
[ Range: Continental (approximately) ]
[ Tactical Value: Transforms reactive defense into proactive positioning ]
"You could raid their dimension." The implication crystallized suddenly. "Enter Tir ná Lia deliberately, confront them on their territory."
"Theoretically." Philippa's caveat carried weight. "Practically, invading the Hunt's homeland with limited forces would be suicide. But the option exists for when circumstances favor it."
"When we're strong enough."
"When you're strong enough. The Lodge supports from distance, as agreed. Direct combat isn't our preference." The blind sorceress's smile held no warmth. "But we'd rather you win than the Hunt. Hence the gift."
[ XP Gained: 300 (Intelligence Gathering, Strategic Planning) ]
[ Level 46: 60% toward Level 47 ]
[ Hunt Knowledge: Comprehensive ]
