Under the night sky, illuminated by the bright moon, Sandy stood by the railing and watched as Luffy and Usopp took their positions.
The two best companions, now forced into a duel because of a clash in ideals.
From Luffy's point of view, he wasn't wrong.
From Usopp's point of view, he wasn't wrong either—just blinded by how much he cared about the Going Merry, causing him to ignore everything else.
It reminded Sandy of himself in the past.
When his grandmother passed away, he also overlooked the care and expectations of others.
When the most important thing in one's heart disappears, everything else becomes meaningless.
Sandy had once become stubborn, impulsive, and destructive—but unlike Usopp, his chance to make amends was long gone.
Is this what they call turning into a demon with a single thought…?
Luffy suddenly turned to everyone on the ship.
"You all stay on board and don't come down, got it?"
Usopp approached slowly.
"He's coming," Nami whispered.
"Usopp!!" Chopper cried.
Sandy gently patted Chopper's head. "Chopper… be a bit quieter."
"But—but…" Chopper trembled.
Zoro crossed his arms. "If you can't watch, go back inside."
Usopp stopped a short distance in front of Luffy.
Luffy's expression turned serious.
"You really came without hesitation. But no matter the result… don't regret it. This is the duel you wanted."
"Of course," Usopp replied firmly. "Just bring it on. I'll show you how strong I am. I already have a plan to defeat you."
The area fell into a deep silence.
Nami anxiously turned to Sandy.
"They're really going to fight! Think of something—Usopp is already injured. If they keep going—"
"Just watch quietly," Sandy said softly.
Usopp raised his voice.
"Don't compare me to those idiots who didn't know your abilities, Luffy. We've been together long enough—I know every trick you have."
"Listen up and don't be surprised! I have eight thousand subordinates. If you want to live, surrender immediately!"
"Eh!?" Chopper gasped. "He actually has eight thousand subordinates!?"
Sandy wiped cold sweat. This reindeer really does have a reindeer brain…
Luffy didn't react. He wasn't in the mood for jokes tonight.
"I've known for a long time you don't have eight thousand subordinates."
Usopp looked up at the sky dramatically.
"Usopp's spell! Teeth filled with razor blades! Fingernails packed with cactus thorns—!"
Luffy launched forward.
"Gum-Gum—!"
But just as he attacked, Usopp coughed out a mouthful of "blood," then collapsed to the ground.
"Usopp!!" Nami yelled.
Chopper burst into tears.
Luffy froze mid-attack.
"Sure-Kill: Ketchup Star!" Usopp wiped his mouth and smirked. "What's wrong? Gonna show sympathy to your enemy? You're not usually so soft."
Luffy's eyes widened in realization.
"Flash Dial!" Usopp activated the Skypiea Dial, blinding Luffy with a burst of light.
Then he repositioned himself, switching into full sniper mode.
"Sure-Kill: Stink Star!!"
Rotten egg shots splattered over Luffy.
"So smelly!! Damn it, you bastard—take this seriously!"
"I am serious," Usopp replied coldly.
"What did you say?" Luffy growled.
"This is my duel. If you open your mouth so wide, you'll get burned. Sure-Kill: Pepper Star!!"
The spicy shot flew into Luffy's mouth.
"It's so spicy—!!"
Luffy suddenly breathed fire.
"Careful rolling on the ground," Usopp reminded him. "I already turned it into a field of spikes."
Luffy instinctively rolled—straight onto the spikes.
"IT HUUUURTS!!"
From the sniper point, Usopp shouted.
"Listen well, Luffy! I'll defeat you and take back the Going Merry—no matter what I have to do!"
He fired again.
"Pepper Star!"
Smoke filled the whole battlefield.
Then—
"It's a Wind Dial," Usopp explained. "The rotten egg smell probably hid the gas, right? Actually… the entire area around you is filled with explosive gas!"
"Sorry about this—Fire Star!!"
BOOM!!!
A massive explosion lit up the entire shore.
"Shit—Space Field!" Sandy reacted instantly, forming a barrier around the ship.
"Dimension—Distort Space!!"
The debris and shockwave disappeared into warped space.
Sandy sighed. Using such an advanced ability just to protect the Merry… for you, Merry, I'll endure it.
When the smoke finally cleared, Luffy stood—burned, dirty, stinking, near tears—but still alive and still determined.
The moon shone quietly above them.
Only the wind and the sound of the waves remained.
"I don't want this," Nami whispered, trembling.
"Luffy!! Usopp!!" Chopper sobbed.
Usopp drew another shot.
"I know this isn't enough to beat you. I know you, Luffy. No matter what kind of fight… you always give everything you've got!"
Luffy ran forward again.
"Sure-Kill: Exploding Cactus Star!!"
"Gum-Gum… Gatling!!"
And the duel continued under the cold moonlight.
