After the incident with Usopp, Sandy lay on the deck where he often napped, quietly staring at the sky as memories from his past resurfaced…
Years ago, in the 21st century, around ten in the morning, inside a logistics warehouse, Sandy—who had just graduated from junior high—was chatting and joking around with another worker while unloading cargo.
Sandy tossed down a bag weighing more than forty catties and complained, "Damn that middleman. So much cargo, and it's only eighteen yuan an hour. Total scam."
The other guy laughed. "He probably spent all that extra money on medicine. By the way, are you a student? You look pretty young…"
Sandy shook his head. "Graduated already. Anyway, did you work last night too?"
"Yeah," the guy replied. "Didn't think I'd be loading with you today. I swear, from last night till now, we've shipped like six trucks."
"Pretty much," Sandy said. "You coming back tonight? Let's just finish a whole truck ourselves."
The guy threw another heavy bag onto the pile and chuckled. "You really like working hard, huh? Well, we're almost off anyway. Sure—see you tonight."
When they jumped out of the truck, Sandy raised a hand to block the blinding sunlight. In the crowded city, even the sun felt dizzying.
His back ached, his legs throbbed, but when the middleman handed over his pay—144 yuan for working from 2:30 AM to 10:00 AM—Sandy still felt satisfied.
No one would hire him for anything other than physical labor back then. Construction work was even worse; Sandy didn't have the strength for that.
When he finally boarded the bus, his legs trembled uncontrollably. Thankfully, he was young—one long nap and he'd bounce back.
He returned to the run-down house he shared with his elderly grandmother, a shabby little building squeezed between towering modern apartments. She sat inside quietly, waiting for him.
She was the one who had found Sandy as a baby and raised him.
Sandy tossed his jacket aside and said, "Grandma, this is today's pay. Keep it safe, okay?"
She looked up at him, expression unusually serious. "Don't you have something to tell me?"
Sandy blinked, confused. "What's wrong?"
"'What's wrong?'" she scolded. "If County No. 1 High School hadn't called, I'd still be clueless. Didn't you get admitted? Why did you lie and say you didn't?"
Her heart ached—Sandy looked thinner and thinner every day.
Sandy froze. "Grandma, you… know? What did they say?"
"They said your grades were excellent and you're supposed to report in a few days," she replied. "Since you didn't show up, they called the house."
"I'm not going," Sandy said immediately.
She frowned. "Is it the tuition? They said with your grades, you won't need to pay. And given our family situation, there's even a monthly subsidy."
"I'm still not going." Sandy shook his head. "You need treatment. We can't delay it anymore—"
"You foolish child!" she snapped. "If you don't go study now, what will you become? Another laborer on construction sites?"
"What's the point of school right now?" Sandy insisted stubbornly.
"We need the money for your treatment. I don't want you picking up bottles every day and dealing with rude bastards. If anyone treats you like last time again, I'll—"
Before he could finish, the furious grandmother grabbed a broom and chased after him. "You're going to school whether you like it or not!"
"I'm not going! Grandma, please stop pushing! Your illness can't wait any longer!"
"You brat! Is this something a child should worry about? Come back here! Cough—cough—"
Sandy rushed to support her. "Grandma, rest… I'll get you water."
After pouring her a drink, he held her hand gently. "Let's go see a doctor later, okay?"
She waved him off. "You're just a kid acting smart. It's an old problem—nothing serious. In a few days, go report to school. If you refuse, then all my effort raising you was for nothing."
Sandy had no choice but to nod. "Okay… but—"
"No 'but'!" she snapped. "Study hard, you hear me? In the future, buy Grandma a big house and give me a few chubby kids to hold."
Sandy's face flushed. "Grandma! I'm still young…"
"Hahaha!" She smoothed his messy hair with a smile. "My grandson is no worse than anyone. You've gotten so thin… Move aside, Grandma will cook something good for lunch."
"Hey—hey!" Sandy hurried forward. "You sit! I'll cook."
She laughed. "You're being filial now, huh? You little rascal…"
A year later, Sandy dropped out of school when her illness worsened. He stayed home to take care of her.
Until one day, she lay in bed, smiling faintly as she whispered, "Xiao Hai… my good grandson… Grandma is really leaving this time…"
Her trembling hand touched his cheek one last time. "Take care of yourself… Grandma won't be here anymore…"
Sandy forced a smile. "Grandma, don't say that. You'll be fine. Let's go see a doctor, okay?"
She smiled weakly. "Silly child…"
Her hand slipped from his face.
"Grandma? …Grandma?"
No response.
Only a silent, cold hand.
"Help! Someone help! Please—someone save my grandma!"
That day, Sandy's world turned gray.
That day, half of his heart died.
From then on, Sandy lost interest in everything. He became withdrawn, irritable, and lonely.
Still, life had to go on. He eventually returned to school a year later, repeating his second year.
But the pain never went away.
By chance, Sandy discovered the anime One Piece. The humor, the adventure, the sheer charm of Luffy… they pulled him out of the darkest period of his life.
It was One Piece that kept him company at night.
The flamboyant personality he later developed came from those late-night binges.
Sometimes, when he napped at school during the day, people saw water stains on his textbooks—not drool, but tears shed in dreams.
Reality was too harsh; his emotions escaped only while sleeping.
When his grades were good, girls frequently talked to him, which stirred jealousy among others. But he ignored them at the time.
Later, when his grades dropped, the visits stopped. They called him "Sleep God."
As he grew older, he realized those girls who once talked to him were now with others.
This was why the Sandy who transmigrated was still nineteen… and why he acted like he did when first trying to pick up girls.
He learned all that from watching Sanji.
Footsteps suddenly echoed nearby, pulling Sandy back to the present.
Usopp and Luffy's duel was about to begin.
